After Scrambled Eggs, based on the mangaka's OWN writing, there were only 3 possible girls in the running, 2 strong candidates, Miku and Itsuki, with Nino being a distant third. There was NOTHING that Yotsuba or Ichika did that made Futaro start paying attention to them during that arc. Yotsuba's just an info dump, Miku gets the starring role and Itsuki is constantly helping Futaro. Nino has the guts to go into the bath with Futaro, so she remained viable. ANY of those 3 girls (and Ichika, who did nothing memorable with Futaro during the arc), was a better choice that Yotsuba. Negi completely violated the rules of mysteries when pulling the Yotsuba ending out of his ass.
