In these sixteen tales of intellectual derring-do, Sherlock Holmes is shown at the height of his powers: he co-operates with a young Winston Churchill in the famed siege of Sydney Street; helps defeat a plan for a German invasion outlined in the Zimmerman Telegram; establishes a link between two missing lighthouse keepers and the royal treasures of King John; contends with a supernatural curse placed upon an eccentric aristocrat; and discovers a lost epic poem of Lord Byron.Everywhere in these finely wrought tales, encompassing the critically acclaimed The Execution of Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Holmes and the King’s Evil, and Sherlock Holmes and the Ghosts of Bly, riddles and mystery hover in the air. But they are not beyond the grasp of the incomparable Sherlock Holmes.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Along with excellent detective work, a sense of the cultural, intellectual, and political scene gives the stories added distinction. Donald Thomas is simply the best there is at Sherlockian pastiche.”
-
Jon L. Breen, Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine

“Few authors have done as well in bringing these beloved and familiar characters to life. Donald Thomas masterfully evokes the flavor of Doyle’s original stories of the great detective.”

Outstanding reading. Donald Thomas very well captures Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's style and wit. He intriguingly engages Sherlock Homes in real life historical events, many of which, it bears mentioning, one can Google up the facts, on Wikipedia, to familiarize yourself with historical record before readings. You'll thank me for this because it will deepen your enjoyment considerably. It's a huge tome of a book at a thousand pages that will keep you heartily engaged for many a long evening. Three collections are included, each of which includes about half a dozen cases, of many pages each. My favorite so far is The Case of the Unseen Hand, an engaging story of the Captain Alfred Dreyfus Affair, and France's Third Republic, complete with the death in falatio of France's President Felix Faure at, or shall we say, in, the hands, literally, of the famed Matta Hari like character Marguerite Steinheil. Plus her subsequent involvement with the murder of her mother and husband, for which she was aquitted. The whole tale is fantastic, told with fabulous fin de cycle detail of Paris at the turn of the century. It's like living in an oil canvas of some fabulous realist painting. These stories by Donald Thomas are in fact more spellbinding for me than those of Conan Doyle, precisely because they are much more detailed, and richly told. Having read and reread everything Conan Doyle ever wrote, including his historical fiction books, I can say that I am thoroughly enjoying Donald Thomas, immensely so in fact, and can highly recommend it to any Sherlockian out there who hungers for more.

The great Sherlock Holmes is a classic and the way he solves cases is amazing. The stories in this book are supposed to be the ones that had to be kept quiet until all the parties were dead. They are good stories, but lack the other Holmes’ spark that Doyle gave them. These, are less exciting and a more boring reading.

The good thing about the 'lost' Sherlock Holmes casebooks is that the style and atmosphere is very reminiscent of the original, and the stories are quite ingenuous. What is quite interesting, is that the writer has taken some real, factual mysteries, and inserted Sherlock Holmes into them as the detective who solves the mystery. This is a very clever idea, and quite well executed. However, the concept falls down on one simple thing: real life is never simple, so the stories either get bogged down in side-detail and explanation, or they leave out too much of the real-life context and the stories become confusing. For instance, the stories refer to certain historical events, but do not explain what they were. So unless you already know about some things - like for instance, the Dreyfus affair - you will be confused. This makes the stories quite messy. This messiness is also evident in the fictional stories - the solution of the mystery depends far too much on coincidence. Just to give an illustration - a man turns right while coming out of a building, to where Sherlock Holmes has stationed himself in order to observe him. What would have happened if the man had turned left? The story would be a lot shorter! In the original stories, this neat conformity never happens. The stories are full of these things, and they become more incredible as the stories progress.
Another thing - the solutions are too complicated and too onerous, and take too much explaining.
While I quite enjoyed this books, and found the writing style easy and authentic, the stories leave a lot to be desired. The one good thing that came out of this, for which I am grateful, is that the references in the story encourages me to do some historical research of my own, which was quite rewarding.

While in all honesty I cannot say the material was in anyway poor or not well written, indeed it is among the best new Holmes stories Ive read in years. The only issue I have is that nowhere was it written that this volume collects the 3 other previously released titles by this author. I have all the others and had I known this was a reprinting I wouldn't have ordered it. Ahh well guess I just got someone an early xmas present. I would like to recommend to Amazon to do a little more research when writing up the pages for products like this to save some customers both frustration and money.

Good read and I enjoyed it, but ther was just something about the plots and characterisation that didn't gel for me. Hence the 4 stars and not 5.
I would still suggest it as a read for Sherlkians, and you can make your own minds up.
