Content Warning: Mentions of LGBTQ+ Pathologization
On this day, the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders. We celebrate this event now because it’s a significant step towards stopping worldwide homophobia. I decided to contribute by designing a flag.
So, here’s a flag for those who made it, LGBTQ+ folks who survived the pathologization they go through daily, know that it’s an achievement to stay strong when facing oppression. You may use this flag to show your achievement.
If you’re the type of LGBTQ+ person who is tired of being pathologized, and is filled with despair, you may use this flag as an “I’m not mentally ill” label. It shows that on this day, you’ve had enough and want something to change, even though you don’t have high hopes it’ll really happen. What matters is that you try.
If you’re a non-pathologized LGBTQ+ folk or an ally, you may use this flag to show that you support those who are pathologized, and that you celebrate the progressive day of May 17th. You may also use this flag to hope that homophobia and transphobia don’t get normalized anymore.
Flag Meaning
The rainbow number 17 represents the day highlighting the LGBTQ+ community, (font: Impact) and the surrounding colours represent society’s failed attempt to “cure” homosexuality; to make the LGBTQ+ community black and white. (reference to the straight flag)
Although my blog isn’t about making symbols, I decided to share it as well. I know it’s not that creative, but I think the number 17 is symbolic for me. Thank you for taking the time to read this post. I have a big dream of progressing the LGBTQ+ community, and I thank you for seeing my effort.
