Is this in the US? That this happens is something absurd to me and I am sorry.
[–]kurariiinkae | she/her | probably not cis i think[S] 509 points510 points511 points  (32 children)
Philippines, I thought mandatory haircuts were a thing everywhere, turns out we're just different 😭 I was happy for awhile because my school in particular didn't enforce the policy like back when I was in Catholic schools... And now I have to, it's insane
[–]camospartan117not an egg, just trans 267 points268 points269 points  (13 children)
You said in the Philippines yeah, I've heard a few stories of people requesting to have longer hair for gender reasons and got approved, maybe try asking r/MtF you might find some help.
[–]kurariiinkae | she/her | probably not cis i think[S] 209 points210 points211 points  (12 children)
I've been planning for awhile to come out to the school counselor since I'm not in a good place mentally either, I, can't really just, yk go up to the vice principal and tell him "Hey, I'm trans", so I'm just hoping it snowballs from there to the counselor siding with me to telling my advisor to my advisor explaining to him... If things go ideal, that is

[–]Lucky_otter_she_her 27 points28 points29 points  (6 children)
what happens if you just refuse to get the haircut
[–]kurariiinkae | she/her | probably not cis i think[S] 44 points45 points46 points  (5 children)
Best case scenario? A warning and a record, do it again get suspended (And I'll be going to this school for another year until I get to university), worst case scenario with a good chance they'll cut it off themselves
[–]koshkamatew_yt 10 points11 points12 points  (3 children)
Isnt that outright illegal?
[–]kurariiinkae | she/her | probably not cis i think[S] 34 points35 points36 points  (1 child)
Nope, like I said and explained multiple times in this post, this is pretty common in the Philippines...
[–]SP34RMINT 3 points4 points5 points  (0 children)
and here i was thinking schools were supposed to care about the wellbeing of their students
[–]polskiftw 8 points9 points10 points  (0 children)
SEA plays by entirely different rules lol.
[–]Elyna-77Lesbian Trans Femgirl 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
it's so fucked up, they don't care about your actual wellbeing or your education, all they care about is that you obey pointless rules. like suspending you over a none issue.
It's always like that when people get punished for harmless things and the punishment messes them more than the thing the did and especially with something like hair length.... which should not be an issue :/
you have my empathy

[–]kurariiinkae | she/her | probably not cis i think[S] 6 points7 points8 points  (1 child)
Not out to my parents and they've been pretty harsh on me cause of the hair, but they stopped bothering me about it after awhile
[–]DragoCubXnot an egg, just trans 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
Cultural differences may apply, but my parents wouldn't stop telling me about haircuts and my nails until I came out. they have pretty much stopped since
[–]Bright69420 16 points17 points18 points  (0 children)
Nope, we can do whatever we want with our body as long as it's kept respectfully as I am in a hotel school (a guy here has a mullet, so it's very lax)
[–]HyperKitsuneLuna 🌙 (she/her((totally cis))) 17 points18 points19 points  (0 children)
that's so fucked up...
[–]AbhiRBLXcracked 12 points13 points14 points  (1 child)
I feel ya, school forces me to cut my hair every 1-2 months everytime it reaches longest boy hair/shortest girl hair length
It makes me almost suicidal and terrible, horrible in general. Try to change schools if possible.
[–]SP34RMINT 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
that is fucked up
[–]Milk_Ways 11 points12 points13 points  (7 children)
Polish schools also have mandatory haircuts and i don't think it's going to change anytime soon becouse the ruling party is changing the country from comunist to a catholic one
[–]Jakukalecute girl but not rlly 12 points13 points14 points  (1 child)
From what info I can get and that I go into a Polish school. I don't think that's really true. Even if, probably pretty rare.
[–]Milk_Ways 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
So my school is just weird
[–]nasiulciaaa 2 points3 points4 points  (1 child)
I've had multiple boys in my class have long hair and there was no problem with that.
[–]Milk_Ways 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
What? How? Is it just mine that's weird?
[–]Due-Nefariousness-23 1 point2 points3 points  (1 child)
Wasn't that the previous government?
[–]Milk_Ways 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
Yeah this year the opposition won but still the previous party has a lot of power thanks to the president
[–]Lucky_otter_she_her 3 points4 points5 points  (0 children)

[–]titanchoo_Aura | she/they 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)

im from México, and catholic schools hate long hair in boys (and for extension to transgirls)
(i think this is a problem of all catholic based countries)
i once had a hair tie in my head because the girls thought it looked funny, and the principal sees it and says "Quitate esa cosa!" ("take off that thing!")
i got told to cut my hair like every month, im so sad that i cant let my hair grow out
[–]sicofthis 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
It’s is in some places in the US too.
[–]Last-Percentage5062 62 points63 points64 points  (15 children)
What? For a mental health thing? l:?
[–]kurariiinkae | she/her | probably not cis i think[S] 98 points99 points100 points  (14 children)
Not in that way, my school had a mental health awareness convention thing you're required to join, so naturally I was happy to join since I wanted to hear what they say, but while I was waiting to get in line the vice principal pulled me aside and reminded me that the school had hair length rules, so it was kinda ironic to me that when we're about to talk about mental health (and in fairness, I'm not out to anyone) one of the only things keeping my mental health together has to go poof
[–]Nox-Ater 54 points55 points56 points  (0 children)
Tell the mental health counselor and ask them to keep it secret. Just let them tell others that it is for your mental health or something. Mandated hair cut are the stupidest thing in school and I also hate it passionately.
[–]Qkk7MupWec9gmKJ 9 points10 points11 points  (11 children)
I'd have to imagine that's against the law
[–]kurariiinkae | she/her | probably not cis i think[S] 38 points39 points40 points  (10 children)
It's unfortunately not, Southeast Asia is really stubborn with this kind of thing, "discipline" or something like thatt
[–]Qkk7MupWec9gmKJ 5 points6 points7 points  (8 children)
I can't find much, the results get flooded with us news completely irrelevant to what I typed, the only things I found were teachers forcefully cutting hair in front of other students as a form of punishment which as far as I've seen is technically illegal now
You could try and fight them over it, or at least wait some more, what would happen to you if you were to refuse?
[–]kurariiinkae | she/her | probably not cis i think[S] 11 points12 points13 points  (7 children)
It's not normally reported, but it does happen, it's happened 5 times (probably more, I just forgot) at my old schools, and institutions here don't shy away from carrying out the same punishment... Best case scenario I get a warning and a record, worst case, and a case that still does have a good chance of happening is they hack it off themselves.
[–]Qkk7MupWec9gmKJ 3 points4 points5 points  (6 children)
Couldn't you just report them if they did?
[–]kurariiinkae | she/her | probably not cis i think[S] 6 points7 points8 points  (5 children)
By reported I meant like, it's not covered by news, if I did report something like that it'd just get buried cause 1. I'm not out 2. Mandatory haircut regulations have been so common here that it's normalized and noone bothers
[–]Qkk7MupWec9gmKJ 1 point2 points3 points  (4 children)
No, I got that, I meant report to the police
[–]kurariiinkae | she/her | probably not cis i think[S] 6 points7 points8 points  (3 children)
Likely no, the police wouldn't care since this practice is normalized, schools here don't get punished for breaking the right to freedom of expression
[–]Alloy_Protogenhas a trans friend and is trying to research 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
Parents and schools can't tell the difference between discipline and abuse, it's pretty obvious
[–]Last-Percentage5062 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
Oh. That makes sense :/
[–]-Fifou-Hanna [she/her] 🌸 Flower Girl 🌸 131 points132 points133 points  (2 children)
Ohhh no why are they like that this is so annoying and it's a mental health awareness thing, they shouldn't literally lower you mental health! This is so fucked up 🥀

[–]Nickckng 24 points25 points26 points  (4 children)
The pain from my days... just to clear things up, are you living in Southeast Asia? Cause this feels very ASEAN-ish.
[–]kurariiinkae | she/her | probably not cis i think[S] 18 points19 points20 points  (3 children)
Philippines, yeah
[–]Nickckng 13 points14 points15 points  (2 children)
So relatable. Idk why the fuck does the majority of teachers and parents around the region thinks short hair = good discipline. At least you didn't get caned yet for having slightly longer hair than army recruit. Those shit gave me trauma.
Ps, fellow Malaysia sister here! All the best!
[–]kurariiinkae | she/her | probably not cis i think[S] 9 points10 points11 points  (1 child)
We've kept that mentality for years in the name of modesty but conservatives are still bitter that the newer generations are more expressive with their looks, it's so bad...
And hello from the Philippines! Thank you and I wish you all the best too :)
[–]Nox-Ater 8 points9 points10 points  (0 children)
Idk why SEA think long hair guy = bad student. And hair colors. Girl with natural lighter hair color are thought to had dyed their hair and ask to dye them black. Fuck dictating hair. Hello from Myanmar.
[–]ke__janot an egg, just trans 9 points10 points11 points  (0 children)
"I dunno why but for whatever reason having my hair this long or longer is very helpful for my mental health."
[–]ThisismyredusernameIndigo (she/her) (lol :) 7 points8 points9 points  (7 children)
Why though?
[–]kurariiinkae | she/her | probably not cis i think[S] 14 points15 points16 points  (6 children)
Standard practice in Southeast Asia/Catholic conservative countries... AMABs don't get to have long hair :'
[–]hEatr3dSmash and Crack until it is Gone! 5 points6 points7 points  (5 children)
And what's the price for non-compliance?
[–]Nox-Ater 6 points7 points8 points  (3 children)
Some school hire a hairdresser and ask them to cut the student's hair. Some other has the teachers cut it. Unfortunately there is no law against those thing. Some progressive school just inform the guardians and ask them to cut it. It is mostly public schools tho. Didn't know much about private ones.
[–]hEatr3dSmash and Crack until it is Gone! 6 points7 points8 points  (2 children)
And if the student objects and actively resists it?
[–]Nox-Ater 6 points7 points8 points  (1 child)
From parent teacher meetings to suspension or expulsion depending on school. Keep it in mind that op and my country is different so punishment may vary.
[–]kurariiinkae | she/her | probably not cis i think[S] 7 points8 points9 points  (0 children)
This is much like what I've seen in recent times, yes this also does happen in the Philippines too, it's just not reported as much so you don't see it on the news at all, you rarely get it "bad enough" that'd you'd be expulsed for it though, PTMs are basically a guarantee for repeated offenses, suspensions more blurry so.
[–]Elsa_Versailles 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
Pretty hefty actually it varies from getting reprimanded to having your parents visits your school
[–]Antroz22 6 points7 points8 points  (0 children)
What if you don't do it?
[–]Nukreeper42069"not an egg" ~every egg ever 5 points6 points7 points  (0 children)
Hair length rules are so stupid
[–]AvaLyn27Ava, (she/her) 23 💜 6 points7 points8 points  (0 children)
That should be illegal
[–]SlugcatLeeahTrans and always dancing 10 points11 points12 points  (2 children)
And why are we not changing schools? This is fascist bullshit!!
[–]kurariiinkae | she/her | probably not cis i think[S] 16 points17 points18 points  (0 children)
It's unfortunate because my school is the most LGBT-accepting school compared to others, lots of openly gay/lesbian people here, just that... They still enforce gender norms :'
[–]Elsa_Versailles 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
Sadly it's the opposite I live in same country as Op and there's this issue of forced haircut to trans student on a well known uni. Sadly, most people agrees that school bylaws are sane and those students should be reprimanded
[–]CreaZyp154Just a femboy I swear 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
Mental health awareness my ass
[–]Meowriter 5 points6 points7 points  (0 children)
What the fuck is this ?! Plus, doing this at a mental health awareness convention... Yikes
[–]Broken_Geari have no idea what gender i am (they/them) 2 points3 points4 points  (1 child)
Check with the laws in your country(not school rules) if they can actually interfere to this degree. In some places it is not (even for private schools).
[–]Elsa_Versailles 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
Sadly we only have safe space law which sort of protects trans people but it's focused more on SA and such. 😔
[–]nvm3031 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)

[–]Bright69420 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)

[–]rw1nnerI kinda like she/her 2 points3 points4 points  (6 children)
Wait, is this an actual thing they do?
[–]kurariiinkae | she/her | probably not cis i think[S] 2 points3 points4 points  (5 children)
In big portions of Southeast Asia, yes, there are regulations for the hair length of AMABs
[–]rw1nnerI kinda like she/her 1 point2 points3 points  (3 children)
Why would they do that tho?
[–]kurariiinkae | she/her | probably not cis i think[S] 1 point2 points3 points  (2 children)
Stupid reasons idk, in my case, in the Philippines, the country is majority Catholic, which enforces that AMABs are required to have shorter hair, that, and the stigma around "long-haired boys being messy and immodest"
[–]rw1nnerI kinda like she/her 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
Oof, that’s sad. I’m sorry
[–]thejadedfalcon 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
This always made me laugh. Ah, yes, Jesus famously had the short back and sides haircut. Anything else and he would be messy and immodest.

[–]Cocolake123 2 points3 points4 points  (1 child)

[–]Wisdom_PenToo Based To Be Cis 🏳️‍⚧️ Nest Tender 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
Human rights laws too
[–]EropQuiz7cisn't 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
Idk, if it was me i would keep not cutting my hair out of pure spite and see, what they gonna do. Maybe even double down on the shit and start doing something else, they wouldn't be fond of. Like, what are they gonna do, kick you out of school? Are they allowed to, tho? All the government-mandated codes should be available online you could read through those. But it should honestly be their business. Tell them you won't cut your hair, unless they point at a specific regulation that allows them to force you to.
Tho if your parents aren't on your side, that might be challenging. The alternative is to push the boundaries, say, only cut the off, like, one centimeter of hair(it will grow back in two weeks or so)
[–]harm0603 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
hugs I hope it will get better in a near futur🥺
[–]BeltNo6518 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
Teachers and principals try not to force guys to cut their hair at school (very hard!!!)
[–]Stoney_Maloney00 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
I'd have a talk with your counselor about this. Up to you if you want to come out to them or not, that can go either way. You could also try to compromise with whoever had told you to get the cut. Just don't be afraid and genuinely try to have a 1 on 1 conversation with them. If you seek them out first, it will be seen as mature, and you will likely be taken more seriously.
Anything but capitulating to the demands.
[–]SP34RMINT 2 points3 points4 points  (1 child)
Why would a school do that? that's crazy

It's just a part of enforced rules and guidelines that's part of schools' dress codes -typically at public schools that have uniforms.
I'm not even in the same continent as OP yet I've had to deal with the same thing all throughout primary and secondary school.

[–]the_everblack 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
Dafuq? Sounds pretty North Korean to me. What would happen if you just ignored this requirement? It's so dumb for them schools to have these appearance limits..? I personally would do everything to keep my beautiful blood colored curly hair even if it means changing school. The appearance of students shouldn't be nearly as much of a concern for those who create them. I had it rough in my school with clothes. Didn't wear anything provocative(?) at all, just a ripped Kurt Kobain style sweater and a button down under it. They were pissed. Oh maybe it was because I also had pink hair at some point (as a boy). Plot twist: the school didn't have ANY legal regulations regarding our looks. Btw do those requirements apply all across your country? Wholeheartedly wish you and your hair luck! You can't loose it!
[–]Tinny10egg 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
sigh… i kinda have the same problem too (i’m also in an asean country) like i cried going to the barber one time :(
why is the shit here just so mean to us
[–]The_Real_MarcyWu 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
Same here, I got in trouble with my teacher because of "Unkempt hair" when I always keep it tidy at school. I wish the Philippines education system didn't give two shits about haircut.
[–]Adekis"gender? I hardly know 'er!" 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try asking to be homeschooled, otherwise just let them know that long hair makes you feel better about yourself. If they actively object to something that aids the mental health of a student and isn't intrusive to anyone or anything then it's a good sign to leave
