World Bank President Ajay Banga clarified that the Indus Waters Treaty contains no provision allowing for its unilateral suspension or termination, emphasising that any changes to the agreement must be mutually agreed upon by both Pakistan and India.
In an interview with American media, Banga noted, "The treaty is not suspended, it's technically called something in abeyance, it is how the Indian government worded it.
"There's no provision in the treaty to allow for suspension, it either needs to be gone or it needs to be replaced by another one, that requires the two countries to agree," he said.
Banga also stated that the World Bank cannot act as an arbiter in resolving disputes between Pakistan and India, but it can facilitate dialogue between the two countries with the help of a "third party."
The World Bank acts as a neutral party under the treaty, which has remained a cornerstone of water-sharing between Pakistan and India since it was brokered in 1960.
