Didn't see this anywhere else.

Wikipedia has banned Congress from editing it due to someone from a Congressional IP address making transphobic changes to Chelsea Manning's page amongst other things. The ban will last 30 days.

More below the fold.

From Tina Nguyen at mediaite.com:

http://www.mediaite.com/...

Back in the simpler days of this summer, we covered an anonymous person working from a Congressional computer, who loved to vandalize Wikipedia in his/her/their spare time. Subsequently, the IP address got banned from editing Wikipedia for ten days — but since the address is shared by hundreds of House computers, it took down hundreds of non-trolling staffers with the ban.

The vandal came back, and thanks to their renewed efforts at viciously editing/trolling articles about feminism and transgender issues, the House of Representatives-owned IP address has been banned for an entire month.

“An obvious transphobe is using this IP to edit the article on transphobia, justifying it with rhetoric commonly used by transphobes,” a user complained, offering a slew of edits made by the vandal as evidence. For instance, here’s the edit they attempted to make on the article for whistleblower and transwoman Chelsea Manning:

Why is this man referred to throughout the article by his alias? He is much more well known under his real name.
According to the link the vandal claimed he got authorization from a U.S. Representative to do it.

There was a diary or two about this a few

weeks ago.

earlier

diaries might have been about the previous incident where the IP was banned for 10 days. This is from a new article.

So, essentially, a Congressional IP address was

connected to a series of prevarications edited into Wikipedia, so that IP address gets banned for 10 days.

Then it's found that further lies are being disseminated from the same IP address, so now that Congressional source is being banned for 30 days.

Do you have this correct? These people literally can't handle the truth.

Their entire M.O.

first and foremost, spread misinformation.

They work at this

constantly. It's like part of their belief system.  They can lie for the greater good...to further themselves and their party.

They "work" 90 days a year, can't pass

substantive, much-needed legislation.  They can spend millions "investigating" trumped-up scandals (Bengaaaaaazi), read Dr. Seuss aloud, vote endlessly to repeal Obamacare, filibuster, go on junkets to foreign countries, have popularity poll numbers lower than crab lice.  Perhaps if they, and their staff members actually did some work from their cushy government offices, there wouldn't be time to sit and "edit" Wikipedia.  After all, they already have a Conservapedia all their own, where they can freely spread their lies and hate, distort facts, spin issues, etc. however they want to.

With lluck, they'll find this idiot and fire his ass or simply just deny everyone from that IP address editing privileges permanently.  The latter certainly wouldn't be a great loss to Wiki or most of its readers.

congress works little

their staffs, however, are always on. they don't get the same privileges that their bosses get.

then mess with the staffers

And the whole thing comes down.

Wasn't there a thing a while back about staffers' costs of living and Republicans spouting off about how everyone in government makes too much?

some staffers are very well paid

but they do in fact work hard, unlike their bosses.

and then there's those just out of college, making pennies.

that said, staffers shouldn't be editing wikipedia from their desk at work like this (and in fact, know better than to do so, at least the few friends i have who work on the Hill say this).

Observe

Observe that readers will also not be seeing wikipedia contributions from liberals, middle of the roaders, etc.

I realize that the Federal government is short of cash, but "each Congressman has her own IP address" and "We are calling it a legal campaign expense" might solve matters.

There was also slander against

Laverne Cox's entry for Orange is the New Black, trying to say she "is a real man trying to portray a woman".

She WAS more in the news under her previous name.

Currently the article says Chelsea with her birthname in parentheses at the beginning.  She is simply identified as Manning and feminine pronouns are used, though the main portrait with the article is pre-transition.  Entering "Bradley Manning" into the search field redirects to the same article.

And they can't find the "staffer"

who did this?

Good on Wikipedia for banning.
