This isn’t so much of a diary as me trying to figure out what went wrong with YouTube.
I have an ad-blocker, but every time I go to YouTube’s home page you hear one of those sickening Trump ads in the background. What the hell is going on? How do I turn this off? While that is occurring I can’t stay on YouTube. What are they thinking? Have I messed something up? I use YouTube every day and I can’t do it anymore. Is there anyone to go to to complain about this?
UPDATE:
I seemed to have fixed the the problem by switching my ad blocker to no longer allowing “Acceptable” ads. What about this did YouTube think was acceptable?

I’ll hazard a guess and say what they found “acceptable” was the wads of cash thrown at them to push it.
But now my ad blocker is gonna block acceptable ads on other sites that need that revenue. It’s insane how much Trump has ruined everyday life.
I’ve had to stop watching content on YouTube. Between those damn ads from The Epoch Times and Ozempic.. Heh, YouTube, I’m not a QAnon fan and don’t have diabetes. Your algorithm has completely failed to figure out things I’m even remotely likely to be interested in purchasing. Epic. Fail.
This only started for me tonight. I am at a loss. It actually frightened me.
Probably triggered by you watching political ads like the ones from LP combined with the RNC deciding to spend some money to deflate the DNC aura. One thing I’ve noticed is the ad sense code doesn’t care which side of the spectrum you’re on. If you are at all interested in politics you get way more political advertising from both sides. It extends to other areas as well. For example, I watch a fair bit of anti-theist content and get bombarded with offers to buy Bibles. I have no idea why I get the Ozempic ads, maybe they’re guessing that since I’m over 50 and American I must have diabetes? Anyways, hang in there, it’s only going to get uglier between now and November.
I don’t even watch the Lincoln Project ads. I can’t stand anything with Trump in it. It’s galling YouTube thinks people would be okay with an audio ad that runs automatically with no way to shut it off. I was always under the impression that those kinds of ads were frowned upon at reputable sites.
I hope that Biden is carpet bombing like this also. I’ve seen a couple of ads from Biden they need more.
Audio is what appeals to the instinct-driven. It is what is important about talk radio and talk TV. Speech feeds into the ancient brain where the emotions reside, and the survival instinct. John Wayne, Reagan, Limbaugh and now poor Donald rely on the voice to mesmerize.
Yes, but do Donald’s mangled words and incomprehensible sentences sabotage or enhance his self-aggrandizing, hate-filled political message?
Install adblock plus and ghostery and you’ll never see an ad on youtube.
I use both adblock plus and ghostery. You can set which websites to block in both of them — so, if you want ads here on DK you can allow them. I have never seen an ad on youtube.
Just click mute and move on.
There is no “Mute” button to click on that ad. You can’t even see where it’s coming from. That’s why it’s so intrusive. There’s no way to shut it off.
I got the ad also. I've never gotten an unavoidable ad on the YouTube homepage before that I can recall. I was unable to stop the ad. I've decided to stop watching YouTube as long as they surprise attack me with obnoxious Trump ads on the damn homepage! Bloody hell.
It’s unacceptable. You should have a way to stop an audio ad.
Adblock plus and ghostery will block ALL ads on youtube.
For what it’s worth, auto-launch video is what drove me away from the Huffington Post.
Completely unacceptable! I would also like to find a way to block dynamic ads (animation, slideshows, rotating ads, etc) on the DailyKos and elsewhere – without having to use an ad-blocker. They’re bloody distracting!
Anyone know a good way to deal with this?
PS. I should add that I am using an ancient Mac operating system (OS X 10.6.8). For which I presume Ghostery and a lot of other software/add-ons is simply not available.
I use a pi hole, and I only visit YouTube with a Firefox browser that has a full suite of ad blocker and privacy add-ons (e.g. adblock, ghostery, ssh everywhere, privacy possum, noscript, privacy badger). I never see ads.
I have an ad-blocker too but YouTube violated its trust by declaring an audio ad with no way to stop it as “acceptable”. YouTube sucks.
Nor do I; unless I’m using my friend’s laptop or phone. On MY desktop...not a one...ever; though I use Opera.
I’ve only gotten Biden ads and I can either listen to them or automatically delete them. I do fells sorry for you having to listen to the Blob’s ads. By the way, I heard that the Orange Blob’s campaign has purchased something like 92 hours of commercials on You Tube.
I’ve gotten five 2 minute ‘commercial breaks’ in one ~12min video.
I’ve had a ~29min ad pop up, recently. A half-hour infomercial, during a YouTube video? 😡
Earlier today, I had a ~16min ad go off… at 1min into an ~8min video. (!) 🤬
“What the heck happened to YouTube?” indeed!
Presumably the marketing geniuses at YouTube assume that any sort of political advertisement is acceptable to people who agree to their advertising.
YouTube, sadly, is becoming just another commercial driven tv channel. $AD. It's only going to get worse.
Had a similar problem but it’s gone away. For a couple of days I was getting (mostly) a Biden ad at the beginning of each video (I watch science and nature and history documentaries 99% of the time). I just turned the sound off and waited for the five-second play to switch to “skip ads”. I checked and double-checked my ad blocker; it was working but being overridden by something YouTube had done.
Somebody shoved a lot of money at YouTube.
The RNC bought all the landing time on all you tube for the 2 weeks of conventions. Simple solution - mass boycott of you tube.
A better solution is adblock plus and ghostery. I have both on my laptop and phone, and NEVER see an ad.
I have not seen an ad on YouTube since 2016 when the Trump ads started interrupting everything. I just subscribed to their Plus service. Like how dKos works.
Thanks for the tip!
Equally annoying: TVs – and especially TVs with infomercials – at the doctor’s office and in other waiting rooms. Likewise the audio commercials at the gas pump. In my book, this is all unacceptably intrusive.
Some time back there was discussion of a universal TV mute device or some such that you could cobble together, take with you, and mute/turn off offensive TVs. Surreptitiously, of course.
I’m sure it’s on Google.
I have at times politely asked for them to be muted or turned off, especially on occasions when I am the only person in the waiting room. Or, not so surreptitiously, muted or even unplugged the TV.
When we lived in the city, my wife and I belonged to a gym that had an astonishing number of TV sets, mostly turned to Fox news. We insisted on being allowed to turn off the on TV set that was right in front of the exercise apparatus we were using, turning it back on when we were done. (Not touching the adjacent ones.)
The gym owners found this unacceptable, so we quit the gym.
I fail to understand why so many Americans insist on having TVs everywhere!
Being assaulted by Dump ads while you’re trying to watch baby otter videos isn’t going to win anyone over.
I know. Isn’t it stupid?
