I’ve felt suicidal before but I’ve never started making actual plans before tonight. I don’t know how I’m going to get through the next four to eight years. I think it would be better and more peaceful for me to take some pills and die peacefully in my bed with my stuffed animals. I don’t see another way out of this.
I thought coming to Kos would help me with these feelings and that we could help each other get through this difficult time. But everyone is yelling at everybody and I feel so hated and alone. I made a comment earlier about how I felt like all of the calls for apologies were getting to feel like abuse. I shouldn’t have said that. It was not a healing thing to say. But somebody told me they hated me for it and now whenever people on the suicide hotline tell me I am loved I don’t believe them.
Is this my fault? If I had voted for Bernie in the primary would this even be an issue? All of these “I told you so’s” are making me feel incredibly guilty and now I think that all of the people who die in the next four years will be my fault. How can I live with myself for that? How can anyone?
I can’t live like this, and I don’t feel like I deserve to ever feel better. And this feeling has only gotten worse as the days have gone on. How bad will this be when Trump is actually President? I don’t know what to do. I’m begging the people here: please help me. Tell me I’m not alone and that we can get through this together. Lie if you have to. Because I cannot live with the truth of how many people are going to die and suffer because of me.

You definitely aren’t alone. Look at Clinton’s numbers. Your grief is shared by at least 60 million other people. This too shall pass.
Matt, I am putting this near the top to increase the chance that you and anyone else feeling the same way you do see it:
Call 911 NOW. Tell them you are suicidal and have made plans for killing yourself.
Jump to an excellent comment from teritaki — www.dailykos.com/... — for saying this better than I can.
{{{Matt}}}
I can’t. I’m frightened of psychiatric hospitals. I’d rather die than go back to one.
The key thing right now is that you are safe. Ask 911 to help you get to the ER, and you can explain to the doctors there that you need to be in a safe place, but do not want to go to the psychiatric hospital
If you have a psychistrist, call him/her now.
Or call any of the many people here who sent you their phone numbers.
Most of all, know that you are not alone. You have a community here who care about you and who want to help you.
I am saying a prayer for you:
May you be safe. May you be well. May you be happy.
{{{Matt}}}
I don’t trust doctors not to lock me up. I spent four years in a mental hospital and they were the worst years of my life. I would literally rather die than spend a night in one. It is the very opposite of a safe place for me.
i love you. this is a hard time but we will get through this. there is much goodness still in life. you are most certainly NOT to blame for any particular outcome. Never ever take that out on yourself. I say this as a Bernie supporter who worked to have him win the primary. Even if he somehow won the primary, it was not 100% guaranteed he would defeat Trump. You cannot personally control the outcomes of elections and life in general. A Trump presidency will be terrible, but the hope is in the resistance, in learning to love and reach out and offer peace and forgiveness and organize and commune with oppressed communities. We will get through this
you are not alone.
we will get through this together.
that is the only way we ever get through anything difficult.
people are not going to die and suffer “because of you”.
if you are able to reach out to people in real life, please do.
It’s four o’clock in the morning. I have to wait a few hours until I can get real help. I’m trying to hold out until then but I don’t know if I’ll be able to.
I feel similar to you. I’ve considered suicide in the past and am now again. My only other real idea is to try to leave the country. If you want to talk to someone now—I’m no professional, but I’ll try to assist you. Send me a private message. I’m currently in a different time zone—it isn’t 4 am for me.
Oh my lord, PLEASE don’t either of you (Matt Z or deadpan) kill yourselves!!!!
The NATIONAL suicide prevention hotline number, 24/7/365, is 800-273-8255. Please call them.
I will send you both a private Kos message with my personal cell number. I am NOT a mental health professional, but I am probably better than nobody. You’d do better with one of the pros at the hotline. But if for some reason you don’t want to call them, then call me. I will be awake for at least a couple hours still. And If you want to wake me up after that, that would be fine.
Hold on, folks. There are ideas, and music, and food, and people worth living for.
I called the hotline earlier tonight but the woman wasn’t very helpful. I’ll call later and see if I can get a different person.
Call the hotline. Call me. Call an old acquaintance from high school. Call your uncle you haven’t talked to in years. Call somebody.
I will. I promise.
Matt, please listen to me…
Over 25 years ago, in the depths of lingering and undiagnosed post-partum depression I made a suicide attempt.
For more than three days I kept talking to myself silently, looking at my two young children and telling myself that they would be better off without me. That there was just no reason for me to keep living.
So I locked myself in the bedroom and ate about 200 prescription pills and called my friend to take my then-husband and kids and to go for a drive for four hours and not to come back before then. So that I could be sure that they couldn’t revive me.
I was so lucky that he really was my friend, because in about 20 minutes the police and paramedics were breaking down my door and taking me to the hospital.
Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem — it’s not a cliche, it’s just the plain truth. No matter what thoughts are in your head, don’t believe them. Your life has value. Just keep telling yourself that until you can reach real help, because I am here to tell you IT WILL GET BETTER. I know it for a fact, because I have been in your shoes.
I just feel so worthless all the time. And I don’t think it is going to get better this time. I don’t see light at the end of this tunnel.
Yeah, it’s been a quarter century and I can still remember how it felt.
Like I was at the bottom of a deep, dark well so far from sunlight or the sound of my children’s voices and so alone and fearful.
But I swear to you, those moments can be left in the past and you can find a better tomorrow, and then another one … until one day you find out that you really didn’t want to die. You just wanted the pain you were feeling to stop.
But time will help with that, and some therapy maybe, that did me a world of good. That and Paxil for about two years.
Just hang in there. It can get better.
i hope you are still with us to read this.
i want to echo what Angela Marx said.
i have been there too. i have been in the grip of believing the pain was so bad I wanted to end my life. i have been the one sitting up in the middle of the night feeling like there was no where to turn and no one to call, unable to imagine things would ever get better. i have struggled through days and weeks and months of feeling like that.
you may not see the light at the end of the tunnel because it is around the bend. the light is there. keep walking on until you get past this current curve. the light will appear. you do not walk alone. there are friends who will hold your hand. if no one is with you in person, there are friends who will talk to you as you trudge on. and keep posting here. this place got me through a lot of dark despairing days. It is open all night.
i was too proud to try medication for many years but I eventually accepted even that help and it put my brain chemistry in a much better place. if you have health care, please at least talk to someone about that possibility. today.
you are loved! in spite of everything! depression’s greatest trick is persuading you that you are not loved. depression is a liar.
Look, baby, call me. I will send you my number. I am depressed, crying and sick but you know what, if you die, they win. Your ultimate act of protest is to stay alive to vote against them in 2 years. Call me.
THIS! LOVE IT! I will share this with MANY people!
if you die, they win.
Your ultimate act of protest is to stay alive to vote against them in 2 years.
Thank you. I hope it helps Matt :(
Matt, I will kos mail you my phone number. I am retired from the medical/social services profession completely now. My purpose in life is now to just be there for those who need a friend, for those feeling lost and alone.
bless you wishingwell… thank you for being there to help others ♥
I encourage you to read these two great pieces:
Your responsibility for the American election : Hint: its not your fault
The Philosophy of Decline and Collapse
Summary: the world is shitty but there is still beauty and hapinness and life
Thank you.
this is a feeling held by so many since Tuesday, but it is time to see everyday life as still possible even in the worst of times and these could become those days soon, but even if these are to be end times, one needs to see them with a sense of peace ( easy to write, so much harder to act)
I’ve been thinking about this a lot. Maybe we live in a right-wing country right now. So do lots of people in the world, and many in much, much worse situations.
We have to do what they do, and just live, and find joy where we can, primarily with other people, and doing things outside.
Stick around, Matt Z.
I appreciate you, and I don’t want you to pay attention to bullies. You have the right to be here, and you don’t have to listen to jerks.
Also, please don’t commit suicide, AND don’t move to Canada either. Bless you!
Thank you.
Don’t accept any I told you so re: Clinton. My I told you so is toward Bernie and his entrenched and non-suppportive 3rd party fan club. So — we all have people we’re blaming — there’s lots of shared feelings of responsibility to go around and in different ways. I lost my brother to suicide a few years back. His family remains devastated in ways you can’t imagine — including me — about why didn’t we know and why didn’t he reach out to let us know as you are now doing. Please please call someone close. Let them help you. We’ve come through hard times as democrats in this country (the Bush years were so so so hard). WE will get through them together. We must — we will have our time to clean up this mess.
You are not alone.
You are definitely not alone. We are all feeling terrible over Trump winning the election. I was talking to my neighbor today about Trump and she literally started crying right in front of me, I went to Starbucks yesterday and people were so frustrated and angry they were practically yelling, I have felt depressed and anxious since Tuesday night but suicide is not the answer. Please, I urge you to reconsider and realize that while it seems bleak right now it will get better especially when we win back the House in 2 years and throw Trump out of office in 4.
It takes all kinds, "pragmatists," "idealists," and more "ists." You are an ally. We need you.
One of the most cynical but astute writers I know of wrote this:
https://theintercept.com/2016/11/09/donald-trump-will-be-president-this-is-what-we-do-next/
And keep reaching out to people.
Please know that people care about you. I know how scary and depressing this time is for many of us. At least we’re in this together. I hope you consider calling a crisis line like the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-8255 if you need to talk to someone. ((hugs))
I called them earlier tonight but the lady on the phone didn’t seem to think the election was a big deal. For all I know, she voted for Trump. Suffice it to say, it didn’t help. I’ll call them again later and see if I get a different person.
I’m so sorry that happened to you. They should be trained to deal with any sort of crisis. This is a big one for many of us.
That woman should not be a Lifeline counselor if she does not realize how the election of Trump has affected people. Please, Matt, try again or call a fellow kossack.
You’ll get through this — you just need someone to help you out of the pit.
I’m thinking about the woman on the suicide help-line who was less than helpful to Matt Z. Who is this woman? Perhaps she is a person whose own life can explain her failure. Perhaps she is a person whose failure can be explained by something obscure to us that took part of her humanity in a stealth attack. We are living in a peculiar time; we are at the beginning of a period of fascist government that will be felt by most Americans, right after centuries of brutal, racist, harmful government that was felt by a minority of Americans while the majority did not realize it and for the most part did not protest it. We are not the first people to be subjected to something like this. We are, however, AWARE of it and of how bad it can get and that is the difference.
All I feel right now is the need to take care of Matt Z and to wonder how many of the Americans who fail (as we all have) like this woman on the help-line we can either live with or (perhaps pipe-dream) protect ourselves against.
I saw my therapist Wednesday the day after the election and she said people are scared to death. Her patients were calling and texting her all day. You’re not alone, Matt. I’m scared but I won’t kill myself over Trump. This will pass. We made it through W.
Please, please don’t feel you’re all alone. Reach out. There are meet ups too. I just saw one form in Las Vegas for people against Trump.
We’re all in this together and we must fight for good.
I saw my therapist Wednesday after the election and she was scared to death. She was hoping to retire after she got her house paid off. Now she's not sure what will happen to her disabled adult daughter.
No. Please. I’ve been there and through it. You will too. Feel free to message me.
I stand with you, Matt. I have taken this as a very personal grief, and I must take the time I need to get through it. I have been keeping to my medical appointments, and I’m surprised that there is still a functioning world out there. But it is still there, and we must stay to do the best we can with what we are given. Please get the help you need, talk to like-hearted friends, take comfort in small things. When you feel the fight turning outward instead of inward, you will find your contribution.
I agree that the aftermath articles are too many, too quickly written. I find some solace in the personal stories being written here. It might be that through these we will find greater strength in our community to build upon. We are a network of progressives. There is more in the world of technology, knowledge and worldwide communication that will move us forward, regardless of the power of those trying to hold us back. I have faith in the young ones to build on their future, protecting the earth, and reaching forward.
Be kind to yourself. We need your voice. We need to hear and to share every voice.
Dear Matt:
You’re not alone. It took all of this to make this happen. In fact, that’s a pretty good definition of democracy. The answer to “How did we get into this mess?” is always “Well, it wasn’t easy. It took all of us working very hard to screw things up this badly.”
Blame is not the answer. Neither the Bernie voters saying “I told you so”, nor the Hillary voters saying “Oh shut up, I don’t want to hear it” are dealing with the problem yet. We all have to go through all the steps: Denial, rage, grief, arachnophobia, and birdwatching. Or something like that -- I think I may’ve left out a couple of stages.
If you’re looking for someone to forgive you? I voted for Bernie in the primaries, so I officially forgive you. We all need to forgive each other, and start the permanent resistance to all the bastards who want to grind us down. The fight needs us all. I hope you’ll be with us to the end.
Pax et Gaudium (Peace and Joy), Leo
Unless you’ve been harboring and feeding Republicans in your basement, none of this is your fault!
We all mourn tragedies in our own way, and mourning binds us… it doesn’t isolate us. You are not alone! Each of us is dealing with the disorientation and disappointment differently, but we are dealing with it… together.
Above all else, don’t cheat yourself. Lady Karma works on her own timetable, she has a perfect memory and a kick-ass sense of ironic justice. She will settle accounts, and you don’t want to miss it as it unfolds!
This bizarre turn of events wasn’t laying in wait for you… it was laying in wait for those miscreants presently gloating over their Pyrrhic “victory”, and they’re too blinded by their own ignorance and malevolence to see the trap into which they’re stepping… a trap which they, themselves, will spring. Count on them to overplay their hand — like the scorpion in the fable, it’s in their nature.
It will break our hearts if we have to witness the inevitable moral “correction” without you…
FEEL US!
Gee, I kept a Republican in my basement one summer
And I did feed him. He was my son’s BFF and lived with us while his parents were stationed in Okinawa. He wanted steak: I gave him vegetables. Every night while the news was on we quarreled because I liked listening to Dapper Dan the Anchor Man and the 18-year-old boy thought Dan Rather was too liberal.
Matt, it was tough for me the first few days but its getting a lot better. The election of one man is not the end of the world - our system is full of checks and balances. We will stick together and come back stronger than ever.
Those checks and balances are now gone since the House, Senate, and Supreme Court is now Republican and probably will be until 2020 (the Supreme Court even longer).
It is only 52-48; they will not be able to make drastic changes. So they will replace Scalia with Scalia Jr. - if everyone else stays for a few more years it can be pushed until the next election.
And—Supreme Court Justices aren’t always known quantities. Warren and Blackmun were appointed by Republicans, and ended up liberal. Stevens too, more or less; actually he just stayed reasonable while the majority evolved to the right.
White was appointed by JFK, but turned out to be conservative.
Kennedy, author of most LGBT-rights decisions, is a Reagan appointee.
Turns out people have their own ideas, and they change.
The next election will be held under completely different rules. After SCOTUS struck down the Voting Rights Act in 2013, various states began implementing voter suppression laws. They made a big difference in minority turnout—and they will implement even more draconian versions of these laws for 2018. Kris Kobach, one of the architects of these laws, is now on Trump's transition team.
They don't intend to lose another election ever again, and they're in a very good position to make sure that happens since they will control all three branches once Trump appoints someone to SCOTUS.
Yes. But please, not here, not now. Let’s help Matt first.
No one knows what is going to happen tomorrow, least of all in weeks or months.
I'm not gonna attack Bernie Bros, but I firmly believe he has no chance.
Stay strong. We shall get through this together.
I too have despaired over this election. It is so awful, and the predictions of doom are so scary. I have been looking for points of light to help me through. Elizabeth Warren was on television tonight talking about what we can do to make it through. She said that we have to fight, we have to work together and find ways to help each other. President Obama met with Trump today and he came away saying he was encouraged by the meeting. I think maybe some of the horrible things won't happen. He will do bad things. But the system is designed to stop and slow down some of the worst things. I also remember that Abraham Lincoln had to deal with a horrible situation, and it was awful, but the country made it through. Franklin Roosevelt had to deal with a depression and a world war, and the country made it through. I think that Trump won't be as bad as those things.
We all voted the way we thought was the best for the country. Even some of the R's did what they thought was good for the country. Each of us who voted in good faith was doing the right thing. We disagreed but we did the right thing. That includes you. Who knows what would have happened if Bernie had won the primary. We have no idea and we can't go back and find out. It's not all on your shoulders.
Peace. Love. Courage. Tomorrow.
Im not a shrink and not much of a poet. But this poem has gotten me through some dark days.
- On Living
Nazim Hikmet, 1902 - 1963
I
Living is no laughing matter:
you must live with great seriousness
like a squirrel, for example—
I mean without looking for something beyond and above living,
I mean living must be your whole occupation.
Living is no laughing matter:
you must take it seriously,
so much so and to such a degree
that, for example, your hands tied behind your back,
your back to the wall,
or else in a laboratory
in your white coat and safety glasses,
you can die for people—
even for people whose faces you’ve never seen,
even though you know living
is the most real, the most beautiful thing.
I mean, you must take living so seriously
that even at seventy, for example, you’ll plant olive trees—
and not for your children, either,
but because although you fear death you don’t believe it,
because living, I mean, weighs heavier.
II
Let’s say we’re seriously ill, need surgery—
which is to say we might not get up
from the white table.
Even though it’s impossible not to feel sad
about going a little too soon,
we’ll still laugh at the jokes being told,
we’ll look out the window to see if it’s raining,
or still wait anxiously
for the latest newscast. . .
Let’s say we’re at the front—
for something worth fighting for, say.
There, in the first offensive, on that very day,
we might fall on our face, dead.
We’ll know this with a curious anger,
but we’ll still worry ourselves to death
about the outcome of the war, which could last years.
Let’s say we’re in prison
and close to fifty,
and we have eighteen more years, say,
before the iron doors will open.
We’ll still live with the outside,
with its people and animals, struggle and wind—
I mean with the outside beyond the walls.
I mean, however and wherever we are,
we must live as if we will never die.
III
This earth will grow cold,
a star among stars
and one of the smallest,
a gilded mote on blue velvet—
I mean this, our great earth.
This earth will grow cold one day,
not like a block of ice
or a dead cloud even
but like an empty walnut it will roll along
in pitch-black space . . .
You must grieve for this right now
—you have to feel this sorrow now—
for the world must be loved this much
if you’re going to say “I lived”. . .
You aren't alone.
First of all thank you for being courageous and asking for help. Please do get on the phone with professionals asap.
If it helps for a laugh, I was doing chores yesterday and in a superstitious moment I wondered if I had jinxed the election by not doing cleaning house before Tuesday. It’s natural when bad news strikes to believe it’s our karmic punishment. But in this case responsibility for Donald Trump lies squarely with the people who voted for him. And if anyone innocent can be blamed it’s the poll watchers except Nate Silver who missed the low turnout.
But in this case responsibility for Donald Trump lies squarely with the people who voted for him.
And with those who consciencely decided to sit out voting for Clinton out of some form of vanity.
It’s late. My spelling sucks at this hour. Sorry.
I’ve been to that dark place many times myself (in fact, I was hospitalized on suicide watch a couple weeks ago). One thing that helps me is listening to “Hold On” from the musical “The Secret Garden”. I would embed it, but my HTML skills suck, and quoting the lyrics might violate the fair use doctrine. Please, please, go to YouTube, take a few minutes and listen to it.
And remember, Shrub eventually gave way to President Barak Obama. Trump will eventually give way to someone much better than Trump. We all want you to be here with us when that bright day dawns.
Dear Matt I hope you are still there.
Let’s get together to make hats to pass out in the 4th of July Parades this year.
Great Yet?
E-mail me.
6 months is about how long it will take to show real good what has happened. It is a great non-violent protest. They can’t knock everyone’s hat off, or can they?
“When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. Think of it—always.” (Mahatma Gandhi)
Our election process was tampered with by a ruthless foreign regime. Do not believe the lie that this was a 'fair and just' election; because there are too many questions that very well may NEVER be answered. The institutions that are to protect our election process; failed us. Actually used against us.
So don't suicide. That is never the answer.
Matt, if you are forming a plan to harm yourself, please please call 911. Put the news and screeching aside and do it, now.
If you are having thoughts of harming yourself that are new and scare you, then call 911. if you can make it to an emergency room, then go there and tell them you are having suicidal thoughts.
If you are having a debate with yourself, whether you can last a few more hours before acting on your thoughts, then put the computer aside and call 911 or go to the emergency room. It's what it's there for, it will keep you safe.
Please know you are not alone, the country and the world mourn with you. 4am is the depths of quiet time, when the anxious mind spins endlessly and the depressed soul turns its anger inward to blame itself. I have worried about those prone to depression as they are the most vulnerable to these feelings of desperation and of seeing no way out.
When the light breaks, as it will do soon here in the northeast, get outside and see the world, in the moment. Notice details of everything, and if you can get out to walk in nature then go for a walk. Dark times have come before, and we must all find ways to love ourselves and each other. You may feel alone but across the country and world you are not alone.
A woman posted on FB her sadness over the lost election, and she went for a walk in her local park. She ran into (of all people) Hillary and Bill Clinton. If I were Hillary I would be locked in a fetal position in the closet for months, but she stopped to take a picture and speak with the woman. Take strength from the strength of others, Hillary has fortitude, she has kept up the fight, and we need to use it as inspiration to fight for our ideals.
Please, fight for your life, call 911.
I have never before replied to a diary of this sort. But my thoughts are:
1. Lots and lots of people here are despondent over the election.
2. Lots and lots of people who should have been banned in the spring are back and bullying people. Most others realize this.
3. Lots and lots of people here have your back.
4. Do what you need to do to get through the night. If it then means avoiding this site, then do so. I avoided this site for 3 years following the John Kerry defeat and it did wonders.
I hope some of this is helpful. Trump is awful but I hope it’s not terminal :)
Hang in there, brother. We need you
Dear Matt,
you were acting just as responsible as any Bernie supporter in doing what you thought was the best thing and in voting for who you thought was the best candidate against Trump. Don’t let anyone tell you differently! It’s the People like you who are making a difference, and you are sorely needed in a society where racism, sexism, and egotism are so rampant.
I’ve just read a few of your diaries, including the first one you wrote. You’re a insightful writer, you express yourself clearly, and you have something to say that others (me, for sure) could benefit from; but what is even more important is that you have genuine empathy and compassion for the maligned and the ostracized, for the most vulnerable in our midst. You’re needed, Matt.
I have been swinging back and forth in a depression the last few days, too. I’ve had fleeting thoughts of suicide myself, not wanting to witness what might be to come. We all are looking for answers right now. Sometimes in our search to find answers we are quick to assign blame to the wrong places (myself included). We’re all trying to find meaning, and a way to stop this from ever happening again. In our grief we sometimes lash out at the wrong people, like the people we should be looking to as allies. We all want to blame something, to point our fingers at something or someone that is responsible for our pain. This is not your fault. You voted for a qualified and compassionate person that would have made a great president. I am so sorry that you are being made to feel guilty for following your heart when you voted. You don’t deserve that. Lean on the people that love you (there are LOTS of us). We have to stick together so that we can fight together for a better future. We need you with us in these efforts.
One thing I have pledged myself, as a way to feel like I’m doing something positive, is I have promised to step in and do something if I see a hate crime occurring. I know those are likely to increase, and I want the victims of hate crimes to know that the violence is not just going to be accepted by others. I’m determined to be a positive answer to the hate. I’ve mentally rehearsed how I would respond and what I would do so that I will feel more prepared in the moment. Maybe I’m just distracting myself with what I can control in this situation, but it has helped me feel better.
Private message me if you want to. I will listen, talk, whatever will help you through. You are loved and you are important.
This is not your fault. Please don’t make major life decisions based on what what someone who has never even met you said to you on a blog.
No matter who you voted for, you are precious, and not alone.
It's not your fault. You did the best you could with the information you had. You're not alone. Many of us feel the same way.
I hope you can get to OK, Matt. I may not know you personally, but I know several past suicide-thinkers and suicide-attempters who made it thru, and are so much better now. They are grateful that their self in here and now is alive, has a right to exist, that their past self didn't kill them off during that really bad time in 2002 or 1988 etc.
{{{MATT}}}
First — NONE of this train wreck is YOUR FAULT.
Second — In two years, there’s another election, and if we start working together NOW, we CAN take back the Senate, and maybe the House too, and that can certainly slow down the shit storm until 2020, when there will be another chance to get back the White House.
In the meantime, we’re all still here — vitual hugs
Matt, i wake up every morning now and cry. For you and for all the people who may, will be hurt in the next 4 years. We must stand together, hold each other up.
Feel free to message me, (Chicago Vlad) let me, let us know you are ok.
It sucks, I know, but we need you and we love you.
This world is engaged in a fight
we need more fighters,
don’t quit us now,
We need you.
You are not alone. A lot of us feel that way, and we’ll get through this together. The 2018 midterms are only 24 months away.
Matt, we all need you in this world so we can fight together to make this right again. Hang in with us!
You aren't alone. It will get better. For me, I couldn't find a way to do it without leaving a mess for my survivors before the pain dulled, numbed, and faded. Took a couple years but I made it, and so will you.
Fight instead. Anger can be a lifesaver when you're accustomed to despair.
Matt, this election is not your fault. You voted for who you believed in, and she was a smart compassionate, experienced candidate. You did your best. We all did.
We’ll figure this out and we need you to stay here and help and support us. We’ll get past this nasty time on the DK, and till then just avoid the blamer diaries. They are useless.
And PLEASE, seek help if you find your depression doesn’t lift. We need you with us Matt. And we care about you.
Dear, sweet Matt, you are one of the most progressive people on this site. We love you! Your voice matters. I look forward to your posts. You are not alone. Am there with you in spirit. Don’t you let them win.
Thank you.
(((((((((Matt))))))))))) I have your back, Matt.
Matt, Hillary won the popular vote.
Hillary Clinton didn’t just win the popular vote. She won it by a substantial margin. By the time all the ballots are counted, she seems likely to be ahead by more than 2 million votes and more than 1.5 percentage points, according to my Times colleague Nate Cohn. She will have won by a wider percentage margin than not only Al Gore in 2000 but also Richard Nixon in 1968 and John F. Kennedy in 1960."

The Electoral College is the enemy. Twice in 16 years it’s deprived us of the best candidate.
Good to hear from you sir. It sucks, but we will get through it. We all have you back, its how we will all make it through this.
Hold on, man. There are more who feel the way you do, than don't. We just have work to do, and we need you for it.
We need everyone. Every soul.

People here can be just awfully mean. I take long vacations from this website because of how vicious people are. But please don't kill yourself. I was really down, too, and I am scared and so disappointed in my country. Ending it all isn't the answer, though. There are still kind people in this world. There are still books. There are still hot drinks on cold days and cold drinks on hot days. You have to focus on the things you would miss if you gave up. It can be anything, Heck, on my worst days I tell myself that I have to keep going just in case aliens make first contact, because I would NOT want to miss that, lol. This is a bad time, but this country has gotten through bad times before. We all need to grit our teeth and stick around, my friend. It matters that you are here. It truly does.
It’s out of your hands. The sun came up this morning. I look at the broad picture. Perhaps there will be more suffering in the next four years. And if there truly is, perhaps it will motivate people to more effectively combat it and perhaps the eight or twelve years after that will end up being better than if this election had gone the other way. Feeling like killing yourself is your poor brain saying it’s tired and needs a trip to the doctor. Bring yourself back to this moment. Get medical help. And remember (or learn) how to occupy yourself with manageable goals and concerns. Presidents can be president because they have some combination of empathy and the ability to close the door and think on other things. We can’t all have that skill to the same degree, but we all need it to some degree. I know. You will think “impossible.” That’s the illness talking. I have a daughter who says the same thing. Sometimes. Right up to the point where she pulls herself together, gets some sleep, sees her therapist, and changes focus—not necessarily in that order.
Stay with us Matt! We need you to be standing with us when we watch them leave in defeat!
I add my voice to everyone else's here. YOU ARE NOT ALONE. We love you and we need you. We will all get through this together. I have been where you are. It gets better. Keep reaching out. There will always be someone there. Please stay and be that someone for other people who need you.
You’re not alone. As desperately terrible as you feel, this is not on you. You voted. You did not vote for Trump, you didn’t create this mess. But you need to stay around. We need all the voices, all the allies, all the like-minded people that we can to get through this.
I know depression lies. I know it feels like you’re alone. It’s all a lie. The truth is there are more of us than there are of them and we will survive. Together. {{{hugs}}}
Matt, the sun will come out again, the rain will fall and tonight there will be stars. We want you here sharing them all with us as we work to fix the things that tRump will break. You’re part of the answer, Matt, NOT part of the problem. We need you. We love you. Take care, Friend.
These aren't my words, but they're still true.
You is kind. You is smart. You is important.
Matt...please...I don't know you, but take a minute and breathe.
I know how you must feel.
Can you think for a minute...try to stay here...in this moment. It's hard, I realize that.
Take care of yourself.
You'll see that there was nothing more you could have done in this situation.
We can only do our best. If you believe that you did that, then you may be able to go on.
Matt—we’re all holding our breath here. Please post again and let us know you’re OK. There’s happiness in your future, even if it doesn’t look it it today.
