Florida Republicans, backed by Ron DeSantis, pushed HB 1225 and SB 918 to roll back child labor laws. These bills would have let 14-year-olds work overnight and stripped break protections from 16- and 17-year-olds. Why? Because after driving immigrants out of the workforce, someone had to fill those jobs and they chose children.
But here’s what they didn’t expect: people across Florida raised hell. Parents, teachers, labor organizers, and everyday Floridians showed up and fought back. They made it clear that exploiting kids to serve corporate profits was a line too far. The pressure worked. The bills stalled. And for now, those protections remain intact.
This is proof that Florida isn’t lost. The people here care. They’re paying attention. They want better for their kids and for their communities. What we need is more organizing, clearer messaging, and candidates who will speak the truth and fight unapologetically for working people.
If Republicans want people to work in the heat all day, they should start by paying a real living wage; not using children as political pawns.
This is what they tried. And this is why we need to keep showing up and vote them out.
