Graduations, I’ve been to a
few.
During my high school years.
I played Pomp & Circumstance
over and over as seniors marched
in until it was my year to gradu-
ate. A decade later, I got my de-
gree at Mesa Community College,
marching again to the stirring
strains of Pomp & Circumstance.
Fast forward a bit, and I was
at the high school graduations of
my daughter Paula and my son
Gery. Then the ceremonies for my
daughter’s bachelor’s degree and,
a couple years later, her master’s
degree. I may have sniffled a bit
as they marched in to Pomp &
Circumstance to take their seats.
Twin granddaughters Danielle
and Ashlee were graduated early
well over a decade ago and now
the youngest granddaughter,
Chloe, has made the march down
the aisle to the traditional music.
Oh, and there were the Ajo
High School graduations of nieces
Nellie and Nico. And of friends –
and then the children and now the
grandchildren of friends.
I’ve lived in Ajo for 42 years
now, and I don’t think I’ve missed
a single high school graduation
ceremony. So that’s 42 of them.
You’d think I’d be tired of
graduations by now, but I’m not.
They are full of hope and promise,
flowers and family photos, smiles
and tears – and I’ve loved them
all.
Hearing Pomp & Circumstance
again, now that’s another matter.
