RANT to bicyclists who think that the bike path on the outside of Green Lake is a velodrome. I was run into crossing the path at the crosswalk at Stroud Avenue and sustained a knee injury. I was told by the folks across the street that it was the third collision by a bicyclist in just over a week, with one of them needing an ambulance. Let it be known: You are in a moving vehicle and you are never in the right of way against a pedestrian.

RAVE to all the rave days! The raves show recognition and appreciation for the acts of kindness and consideration of people who make our community so special, and make the world a little bit better.

RANT AND RAVE Rave to the postal service for its annual food drive. Rant that many people don’t get the postcard about it in time to buy food for it — or don’t get it at all.

RAVE to all the people who stopped to ask if I was OK after I tumbled off my bike the afternoon of April 18 near St. Thomas Church in Medina. A special thanks to the woman in the red SUV who called 911 and to Chris and Taylor, two young men who stayed with me until the ambulance arrived. Raves also to Bellevue Fire, Medina police, the ER crew and the staff on 5E at Overlake Medical Center. Thanks to all of you, I have a brand-new hip and expect to be riding in due time.

RAVE to the help I received when I was at a medical facility having a bit of trouble transferring from my car seat to a wheelchair. A number of people descended on me all to help, and help they did. Thanks so much for human kindness!

RAVE to the nice guy at a local car wash who cheerfully retrieved an item I’d accidentally sucked into the vacuum. He told me it happens all the time, and never acted like I was lame for asking. I almost didn’t ask, but I’m glad I did!

RANT AND RAVE Rave to the local co-op for having 50-plus kinds of sodium lauryl sulfate-free toothpastes, powders, etc. in a wide variety of flavors. Rant for only two of them containing fluoride, and both of those are boring old mint.

RAVE to the Seattle Public Utilities food and yard waste crew servicing the Interbay/northwest Queen Anne neighborhood. Our yard maintenance company unfortunately blocked access to the waste cart when the recycling crew came by to collect. They circled around a second time, yet again finding no access. Instead of giving up, the collection crew returned a third time to successfully complete the pickup. That is good customer service and very much appreciated!

RANT to the Seattle Department of Transportation. Does it have surplus funds? The addition of two pedestrian islands in the middle of Northeast 45th Street in northeast Seattle serves no purpose. In driving that street for 40 years, I have seen very few people crossing the street midblock on 45th. There are many other potholes and cracks in street pavement that need attention.
