User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:133.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/133.0
Firefox for Android

Steps to reproduce:

I upgraded to a new phone and tried to continue my browsing session from my old phone. I looked for an option to export my open tabs, history, and other session data from Firefox on my old phone to the new phone, but no such option exists.

Actual results:

There is no built-in way to export or transfer a browsing session (open tabs, history, cookies, etc.) from one phone to another. Firefox Sync is not a reliable alternative, as it often fails to fully replicate the session and does not sync everything, such as cookies or exact session states. Additionally, the profile folder is stored in a protected directory on Android, making manual transfers impossible without rooting the phone.

Expected results:

Firefox should have an option to export and import the full browser profile on mobile devices. This feature would allow users to save their browsing session, including open tabs, history, cookies, and other session data, to a file. The file could then be imported on another device, ensuring a seamless transition when upgrading phones or using multiple devices.

I opened a Mozilla Connect discussion on this a few weeks ago with no response. Here's the link: https://connect.mozilla.org/t5/discussions/will-firefox-mobile-implement-browsing-session-transfer/m-p/79187#M30180

A few suggestions per ChatGPT:

  1. Export/Import Profile Tool for Mobile:

    • A user-facing tool to export and import profile data (including tabs, history, cookies, etc.) without requiring root access. This could create a file that you can move to a new device and import directly.
  2. Session Backup/Restore:

    • Similar to desktop session restore, a mobile-specific feature could let users save their session state (open tabs, cookies, etc.) to a file or cloud storage. This would allow you to pick up where you left off on a new device.
  3. Enhanced Sync:

    • Firefox Sync could be improved to better handle full session data, ensuring seamless restoration of browsing sessions across devices.
  4. Cloud-Based Profiles:

    • A cloud-stored, encrypted version of the browser profile could allow for seamless migration and cross-device continuity.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Fenix::Accounts and Sync' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.
