Which camera should be launched?

Posted here because the "General Questions and Answers" subforum does not support polls, so I guess I am supposed to post them here.

I am doing this poll because something that severely annoys me about smartphones is that the front camera is launched if the front camera was last selected before exiting, and there is no option for "do not remember last used camera" or "always launch on the rear camera".

On several occasions, I missed out moments because the front camera opened. Before I was able to switch to the rear camera, the moment had already passed.

Every time before exiting, I need to take care of switching to the rear camera first.

Is it just me who is annoyed by this? Which do you prefer?

Fourth option - have a setting in the camera app for the user to decide between three different options:
  • Always launch the rear camera.
  • Launch the last used camera.
  • Always launch front camera.
I would want my camera to always default to rear, but I can understand other users might have other preferences.

Note that on my Pixel 8 Pro (and all my previous Pixels and other phones), rear was always default.

Indeed. This would be so simple for phone vendors like Samsung to implement.

Samsung already lets the user decide whether to always launch in photo mode or the last used mode. This is just one step away from an option on which camera to launch.

It really annoys me too when the front camera automatically opens. Sometimes you want to take a quick video of something and lose time switching the camera. I have two phones and one of them has this problem, so I just gave up the camera on it. I'm not sure if it can be disabled in the settings and I don't understand why this feature was added. Terribly inconvenient!

. A simple fix would be if smartphone manufacturers added an option to always default to the rear camera, regardless of the last used setting.

Indeed.

In the meantime, you could try using a third-party camera app that allows more control over default settings. Hopefully, this feature gets more attention and becomes a standard in future updates!

Unfortunately, third-party camera apps like OpenCamera can not be launched from the lockscreen and are much slower than the pre-installed ones, so we currently are at the mercy of the vendor to create a user-friendly camera application.

Sometimes, they fail to record at any resolution or framerate beyond 1080p at 30fps.

I found this accurate meme in a different thread:

Such an annoyance would be prevented if smartphone cameras had an option to start on the rear camera, instead of doing us the non-favour of remembering the last used camera.
