Sherlock Holmes is dead--or so most of the world thinks. His fatal plunge over the Reichenbach Falls as he struggled with his archenemy, Moriarty, has been widely reported. But Holmes has escaped and is alive. In his immediate circle, only Holmes's brother, the lethargic genius Mycroft, knows of his survival. Even Dr. Watson thinks that the great detective is dead. Among his enemies, Sebastian Moran, Moriarty's chief henchman, knows of Holmes's probable escape and waits for their inevitable meeting. From 1891 to 1894, Holmes wanders through Asia. He is alone, without Watson, without Scotland Yard, armed only with his physical strength and endurance and his revered cold logic and rationality. The adventures recounted in The Oriental Casebook of Sherlock Holmes range from Lhasa to Katmandu, from the East Indies to the deserts of Rajasthan. In Tibet and throughout the Orient, Holmes is caught up in the diplomatic machinations of British imperialism that Rudyard Kipling dubbed "the Great Game." He confronts the tsarist agent Dorjiloff, the great art thief Anton Furer, and the mysterious Captain Fantome. And here, written in Holmes's own words, is the account of "The Giant Rat of Sumatra," for which until now he so famously thought the world unprepared. For Holmes's fans throughout the world, the stories in The Oriental Casebook of Sherlock Holmes fill in an enigmatic gap, the cause of so much speculation in the great detective's career.

All true sherlockians know that, for many reasons, Dr. Watson did not record all of Sherlock Holmes' cases. The most fascinating ones are the ones that occurred between THE FINAL PROBLEM and THE EMPTY HOUSE, when Holmes was traveling in the East. Mr. Ted Riccardi scratches that itch for us very well. On the whole, the stories are well told, and each tale tells the story of a reference in one of the original stories. For instance, the well - known giant rat of Sumatra receives a fascinating treatment. In a three-tale arc, professor Moriarty and his brother are examined most carefully. A quibble here: Sir Arthur is not consistent when naming Holmes great antagonist. For the most part, he is referred to as Professor Moriarty. However, in The Empty House, Holmes calls him Professor James Moriarty. Dr. Watson also refers to the professor's brother as Colonel James Moriarty. Finally, in the Oriental casebook, Riccardi refers to the brother as James. Confusing; it could have been done better. But, all in all, a minor quibble. This is an entertaining book, filling in the blanks in the official canon quite nicely. Well worth your entertainment dollar. I highly recommend the CD version.

My husband and I both listened to this as an audiobook. We both found the plot and tone of the stories very much similar to the author's originals, with new and very interesting cultural and geographic references. The audiobooks were helped by the fact that they were read by the same narrator who did the original stories for that audio line, so there was auditory continuity, but we both felt the author did a fantastic job of keeping the environment the same as the originals. We both highly recommend it.

What did Sherlock do during the "lost years". These stories have him performing investigations and doing little jobs for Mycroft and the foreign service in Asia. This was a fun read.

I bought this after seeing it at another bookstore. Having read some Sherlock Holmes stories, I can say that Dr. Riccardi did an excellent job catching the style and cadence that Doyle used for Watson. The stories were engaging and left me craving more, while also providing an interesting answer as to what Holmes was up to between his "death" and his return to London. I thought that this was very well-written and Riccardi used language that one would expect for the time period that he was writing about. The only issue I had was the editing. There were a few places where the editing was off that could throw off the flow of the story. This may only be an issue that I noticed (I'm an English major and tend to notice these things a lot), but other than that the stories flowed beautifully. I would definitely suggest this to anyone that has an interest in Sherlock Holmes and is alright with the idea of someone other than Doyle writing about the character.

I've been trying to get myself through this book for a year. Part of the problem is poor editing. I found 5 typographical errors between page 58 and 66 alone, much less others, and I set down the book for months because of that. The rest of the problem is that there is little deductive reasoning offered by Holmes and the stories are of a more fantastical nature. The voice of Holmes is simply not in line with the original stories. I have read the entire canon more than once including various annotated versions such as Lelsie Klinger's and William Baring Gould's and I cannot agree with the reveiwers who say that this is writing is in character or at all reminicient of Sir ACD.

I am of two minds on this book.

I enjoyed most of the stories, however the writer is disregarding Holmes canon on how sherlock would act.

You will see that especially in the story featuring Col Moran which contradict the Doyle's Return
