"John stepped back, to make room for his incredulity." Page 171 from the story, Suckers. This has to be my Absolute Favorite quote from the entire book because it Perfectly sums up John and Sherlock's relationship in one concise statement. Some may choose to argue that point, but time and time again throughout these Delightful stories this respose from John to Sherlock's genius and/or behavior is demonstrated. From bets over drink ingredients in a Victorian pub, to a silent agreement on justice for a young streetrat, apparently multiplying children in a museum, mixed up satchels, and overly amorous octopi, to the ubiquitous Sherlock shamming John when he falls asleep in a morgue cooler; you will simply Not be able to stop smiling, chuckling, and laughing right out loud as our favorite detective and doctor meet each other anew over and over. A Fantastic writer and a Marvelous, Imaginative read that you'll come back to repeatedly for your favorites. I can not recommend it enough!!

This incredible little book deserves all the bravos I can give it. It's a must have for any Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Sherlock (and all the other characterizations of film and television as well) devotee. There are so many heart-squeezing moments and shout-outs to Holmes and Watson and Sherlock and John and their legendary friendship/partnership and Wendy's friends and fans that it is a terrific read. Upon finishing it, I turned back to the first page and began reading again. When it becomes available in paper (I bought the Kindle version so I wouldn't have to wait!) I will also purchase that to proudly tuck it onto my bookshelf. Wendy's heart is in every word of this wonderful book and, as always, she brings so much life to them, you wish they were indeed flesh and blood. This book is a superb addition to the world of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson and one I will treasure always.

This is a great introduction if you are new to the fandom, it will make you want to read ACD Cannon.
If you are an old time hat, this is a necessery addition to your collection, well written and thoroughly enjoyable because while Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's mysteries are entertaining it is ultimately Dr.Watson and Sherlock Holmes's friendship that make Sir ACD's stories timeless. Inventative and imagintive it is a fabulous read all on its own but one that will be sure to reinspire your love for one of literature's most famous partnerships.

This series of short stories was delightful. Some are charming, some ridiculously silly, some harrowing, some heartbreaking. All are completely original and beautifully written. The author's style is unique--witty, entertaining, emotional. And so many happy endings--every time, we want these two lonely men to find each other, and every time, they do. A wonderful choice for any fan of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, whatever their iteration.

I'm a Sherlock Holmes fan. I haven't always been "this way". And "books" ? I have a few 100,+-. But... I don't have ANY that I don't consider of SPECIAL VALUE. If one happens to get stuck in our house and it's "under "MY" jurisdiction, it won't stay long; off-to-the-thrift-store-it must-go! I scour Amazon first for deals. On this one I had an inside track it was coming but was not yet available, I ordered it, wasn't available for 3 weeks, now it's available of course. It is a true adventure book set in both Victorian and modern times, just like the movies about Sherlock Holmes circulating today. Fans love the stories so much there HAD to be MORE than just the stories written by A.C. Doyle, and so there are. The average story in this book is 5.7- pages long. So one, or five stories could be read without a huge amount of time consumed. The thing is this, IF, you are NOT familiar with Sherlock Holmes, at all, you will probably want to take it slow because, the language does take some "British" thinking, as do most of the British detective shows we see on PBS, Netfliks or the Library disks.
Read the book's covers to understand that these are "fresh, new stories about fifty different ways that Sherlock Holmes and John Watson MIGHT have met one another had they NOT met at the hospital, where Holmes was conducting experiments that day, and had they not both been seeking lodgings "at a reasonable rate" which, Sherlock's friend now became aware of by meeting Doctor Watson at the Criterion bar in London. Even these facts may be a mystery to you if you have never wandered into British detective mysteries before. The stories are bite sized, infectious and entertaining.
My father used to watch Ronald Howard as Sherlock Holmes in the 1950's when I was a kid. I ALWAYS wanted to be outside with my best friend, or friends finding our own adventures especially on saturdays when Sherlock Holmes came on in our town of Hempstead, on Long Island. But sometimes I would stop and watch for awhile. Years past and somewhere around 2003 I picked up a few DVD's at a Dollar store in Florida, they were the same Sherlock Holmes programs as I remembered from 1955-ish. The opening Theme music was unforgettable- I was transported back in time and became hooked. Today I have 100's of Sherlock Holmes DVDs. Well, I'm a pretty critical person, not in the sense of picking everything apart because I think I could have done it better or even that "anyone" could have done it better, but if I feel, after 71 years of living, that it's "just another..." something- anything, then I'm not going to appreciate it. If I don't appreciate it, in my opinion, I'll tell you why. All any of us humans have, is ONE opinion- our own. If we have no credibility? Who cares what we say. If you read fiction at all, and mysteries, good..., and detective stories with old and new- zest; perfect! I LIKE THIS BOOK.

Such a delight! Each chapter has a different spin, a different voice, yet the characterizations remain spot-on, always true to the legendary partnership of Holmes and Watson. With each encounter, I kept thinking, "Oh, THIS one is my favorite, this one is the best!" until I finally had to admit that they are all superb, and defy preferential comparison. This book is the ultimate in meet-cute storytelling.

I also loved the nod to Verit(y) Burns, and other fandom in-references, as well as ACD canon. There's plenty here for casual fans and hardcore Holmesians alike!

Excellent prose as always and what you would expect from this accomplished author. I've always enjoyed her other fiction and seeing that she had made the jump into published works was a pleasant surprise. The stories of "The Day they Met" are witty, unique and while each chapter is short by design, all are very entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great take (or more than one) on Sherlock Holmes and John Watson
Reviewed in Italy on March 20, 2015
I love this book, but I'd say that is pretty obvious from the five stars I gave it. I wish I could say that I have read it all in one sitting but no, real life hasn't been relaxed enough to let me do that and you know what? I say "thank you for that", because in this way I've been able to cherish each story, even though the glutton in me wanted to gorge on them.
Fries sapiently alternates 19th century and modern Holmes and Watson, thus underlining the concept at the basis of her collection of fifty short stories: these two characters, created by Arthur Conan Doyle, are immortal, and no matter what, no matter where, no matter how they meet for the first time, they will always be the best of friends, perfectly suited and there for one another through thick and thin.
Fries' tone and style are among my favourites and they are shown to perfection here: constantly impeccable, no ups-and-downs, and they make every story a little gem on its own. If some of these stories resonate more with me, like "Bloody Charming", "Terry the Terror", "Make Love, Not..." and "My Brother's Keeper", well... I'm only human, and it doesn't at all mean I enjoyed the others any less. On the contrary, I feel like praising Fries for another feat: she made me love short story collections again, and I can only thank her for that.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for all those who love Holmes and Watson.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 27, 2015
Fifty well written and beautifully crafted short stories that are entirely in the spirit of all incarnations of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. Wendy's love of the canon, and all that the canon has generated, shines from the pages, as does her love for the partnership between Holmes and Watson that drives all Holmes stories. Whether they meet in a hospital in 2015, or in a pub in Ireland in 1880, the core of these two men who have captivated our hearts for over a hundred years remains true. This is a book I will read, and re-read, until the pages are worn out.

This is a great read- the author knows the Sherlock Holmes stories inside out & in this book has used that firm foundation & her great enthusiasm for modern Sherlock & John - & original Holmes & Watson to create many alternative ways they might have met - and they all work. A perfect & enjoyable read not only for all Sherlockians, but also a fun way for anyone to enter the world of Sherlock Holmes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fabulous book, worth every penny.

Wonderfully written, this book is funny and touching in equal measure. The variety of places, times and situations in which Sherlock Holmes and John Watson meet is ingenious; and as soon as I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. It's worth every penny, and I know this book will be read time and time again. It's now a firm favourite and takes pride of place on my bookshelf.

4.0 out of 5 stars Savour and enjoy Sherlock Holmes again story by story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 11, 2016
We all know how Holmes and Watson met, but what if it happend in another place and another time? What could have happened? Here is a series of stories that explores just that with wit, fun, and faithfulness to the original characters. The best part: a reader can pick it up whenever they want, read a few stories and put it down; you don't need to read it all the way through (though you certainly can) in one shot to enjoy it! It is best enjoyed slowly, like a good meal or fine wine.
