The translation of the letter from Mr Hara is as follows:

Charles L. Freer Esq.
Dear Sir.

It was with a great regret that I got your message through Mr Nomura, our mutual friend, regarding with the postponement of your visit to Nara. You can scarcely imagine how great was my disappointment! You know I have been looking for the opportunity of studying arts with you with such a keen interest which is only common to you & me, mysteriously born with the same bias & tendency of taste. As to the new cocoons begin coming in from the end of this month & the silk industry in which I am professionally engaged will commence then, the busiest season will set in for me. I may not, therefore, be able to find time to go down to Nara after the 29t Inst. & I have, very much against my will, to drop the pleasure of seeing you there & hope you will excuse me. It is my only sincere hope that you will kindly arrange so that you will spend more than two or three days with me & my family on your return to Yokohama & disclose me all the result of your study & investigation at Nara & other places. I hope you will most carefully study Nara & its arts & try to introduce its true phase to Europe & America. I may just suggest you to pay special attention to the study of the places & objects enumerated below.
1st General architecture of Horiyuji.
2nd. Buddhist figures in the Kondo of Horiyuji.
3.  Pictures on the wall.
4.  HIjiri Kannon of the dream palace
