TOKYO -- Purveyors in Japan's doughnut market are cooking up domestic and foreign expansion, challenging the longtime domination of the ubiquitous Mister Donut chain by pursuing underserved segments and external sales.

Japan's Jack in the Donuts plans to open its first overseas store in November while also eyeing more domestic shops. Krispy Kreme Doughnut Japan, a chain originally from the U.S., aims to increase its store count by around 20% to reach 100 locations nationwide by 2026.
