GALVESTON

A 49-year-old Oregon man was in the intensive care unit at a University of Texas Medical Branch hospital after nearly drowning Saturday, officials said. 

Galveston Island Beach Patrol lifeguards noticed a swimmer who appeared to be struggling just west of 39th Street, according to a beach patrol news release. The incident occurred at about 4:23 p.m.

A beach patrol supervisor swam out to the man to check his welfare and found him unresponsive and not breathing, according to the release.

The man was brought to shore and CPR was started immediately. The Galveston Fire Department and Galveston EMS also responded to the scene. Galveston EMS took over the man's care and transported him to the medical branch.
