PewDiePie Uses Linux Now
He posted this video two days ago and it has 3.7 million views so far. I don't normally watch his videos but this one caught my attention. He actually makes some decent points.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVI_smLgTY0
It is nice to see Linux being used in the gaming community. I hope this wins over more people to using Linux.

Statistics from Pewdiepie's Linux video?
It'd be cool if Linux Mint devs published a blog post about the statistical impact of pewdiepie's video on Linux.
He wasn't the only one mind you: as the biggest non-company owned channel on youtube, the impact of his video was HUGE. I heard some download mirrors even went down because of the sheer amount of users downloading isos from them. Not to mention dozens of smaller youtubers made videos reacting to it(with many more to come). Speaking view-wise, about just long format videos(no shorts/tiktoks), one could easily expect a total of 10+ million views these past 2 days alone, from pewdiepie and other channels.
With this whole movement, it'd be interesting to see a note about how it impacted things. Was there a huge spike in downloads? new users in the forums? etc
I'd imagine the impact was pretty big as pewds mentioned using Linux Mint in specific

Re: PewDiePie Uses Linux Now
I've never watched any of his videos myself, but yeah he has (had?)a massive influence on the younger folks. I also see the video games industry pushing a narrative of "you don't own this WE own this, you pay for temporary access" on that same audience of kids.
I'm very curious to see how the greater gaming community reacts to the FOSS mindset, if they do at all. I'm thinking of the less tech savvy young people, who have only ever used new windows and mobile OS's.
I know when I did, I went from shopping for new hardware in order to have the best and latest, to buying low power mini pc s and recycling my "out of date" systems. I bought a video card yesterday, for the first time in over 16 years. I spent $30ish to bring my old workstation back as an Ubuntu backup server. (*assuming I don't get a brick) I guess more of "I need a seperate low power machine to do this" approach rather than a "my super-puter does all". Instead of trying to stay cutting edge, I've lowered my power usage and *added a seperate backup machine in the process, saving $100's. The actual usage of the computer has only gotten better.
I can also remember an industry that didn't seem nearly as hostile as it is today; multi-player is a paid feature, skinning your character is too. Hope you made sure to check that the $100 deluxe edition game you just bought actually includes the game. Everything just feels scammy, even the actual "AAA" releases.
Turns out the smaller games, from small or indie devs, Dusk, Jupiter Hell, Brigador, the ones I want to play have native linux releases.
I'd be curious to see how many people switch over because of his recommendation and stay. I get the feeling a lot of people are about to learn the difference between being a user (read the man. try and learn) and being a consumer (who just gets whatever, privacy and predatory business models a non-issue, be in the landfill next year anyway) I found when I switched, the people I wanted to interact with were already here.
I'm thankful this isn't a consumer friendly environment (the existence of the terminal, licensing) and I don't think it should become one. It's an environment that benefits users first, the way it should be.
I'm all for people switching to Linux, but having an "influencer" for that industry pushing for it makes me extremely suspicious. There's a lot of money behind that guy, money that's usually hostile to Linux and FOSS. I'm gonna guess he did this to get attention drawn to Linux, he'll "use" it for a while, and find a reason that he should go back and you should too

people are being Forced to Move from Windows -10,
in the same way, that people were Forced to Move to Windows-10 . .
now, there is folks that won't like Microsoft from Forcing them - to Move Again -
Thus - they will stay put - which is okay, in the short term, but - then what

I like the first comment:
That's always been the flip side of the computer power trip, hasn't it? Users (especially males) like the control aspect. Trouble is you have so much control that if anything goes wrong it's probably your fault. If you're programming it's almost always your fault.Pros: you control whats on your computer
Cons: you control whats on your computer

Re: PewDiePie Uses Linux Now
I think the video is a good thing and I hope lots of people watch it.
That includes people already using Linux. Because more views on a video generate more views from other people. Also comments and like/dislikes help spread video.
And the more people watch the video, the more people can be reached and maybe convinced to try Linux or just switch to it. And more people using Linux is a good thing.

I must be one the very few people around here that had never heard about the guy before he switched to Linux.
Fun and entertaining vid and he proved more competent in customising his desktop in a month than I have been in 25 years

I am so glad!
I am so glad that a major YouTuber shouts out the Linux world!
I just hope Linux won't go the way of Android once it goes mainstream. Google has sadly enforced lots of restrictions on Android that are difficult to lift, especially regarding storage access. For example, since Android 4.4, the user was denied normal usage of their memory card, one of the greatest selling point Android smartphones had over iPhones!
Also, Linux foundation needs to keep out of politics. Just build a great operating system. Politics and Linux don't mix.

Re: I am so glad!
Which Linux foundation? The Linux Kernel Project isn't very political AFAIK. However Linux is technically just the kernel. Mint, like any other Linux distro I know of, is actually GNU/Linux. You need the GNU wrappers to actually be able to use the kernel. GNU is rather political IMO.
