After a most successful run of her first three Sherlock Holmes novels;

The Secret Diary of Mycroft Holmes: The Thoughts and Reminiscences of Sherlock Holmes’s Elder Brother, 1880-1888

Sherlock Holmes: The Three Brothers

Sherlock Holmes: The Addleton Tragedy

S.F. Bennett comes out of the gate very strong in her debut novel of short stories about the Great Detective, The Collected Endeavours of Sherlock Holmes

S.F. Bennett is a worthy heiress to the Holmes canon. Delving into these adventures is like finding missing adventures from the master himself, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

She has a firm grasp of the Victorian era, from language to setting to atmosphere.

Every Holmes fan should read these adventures and then proudly place them on the shelf, next to the master.

The Terror of the Tankerville
Holmes is recounting an adventure to Watson that took place in his early career. Major Pendergraft has found himself in debt and fearful for his life.

Holmes begins his investigation of it and finds that he is simply part of a scandal that has been going on for quite some time. as he uncovers what happened, he peels back the layers of the misfortune of many men before him.

The Case of the Enthusiastic Amateur
While Holmes is away, Watson comes across an old friend named Thurston who shares with him that because of a bad string of investments, his life is now on the line.

Watson, wanting to help and feeling that he’s up for the challenge, tries to mimic Holme's tactics to help his old friend.

But has his association with homes been long enough that he can follow the detective's footsteps? If not, will help arrive in time?

And who knew that Mrs. Hudson could be so formidable an opponent?

The Case of the Christmas Star
A newlywed Watson realizes that he unwittingly sent a crate with a medical torso that he purchased to his old address by accident.

Arriving at 221b Baker Street, he not only finds the package but once opened, a real corpse is in it instead. He thus finds that he’s caught up in a diabolical scheme with local ruffians.
Holmes returns to Baker Street as Lestrade joins them. But is it already too late to save the three friends?

The Last Encore of Quentin Carol
Colonel Warburton, retired, comes to see Holmes and Watson because of something very queer happening in his apartment.

He found his upstairs neighbor, who sang each night, to be dead, but a day later he was once again, singing, and everyone in his apartment, as well as the fellow's nephew all confirm that he is still alive.
Holmes has no penchant for the supernatural but is intrigued enough to take the case.
Has the read man arisen, or is the answer more terrainially explained?

The Devil of the Deverills
Holmes regales Watson with an adventure early in his career before Watson took up with him. Mr. Zeal has shared his concerns with Holmes that a Devil must be among him and his neighbors as a series of animals have recently met their demise.

It’s no help either that a vocal, venomous, Vicar is throwing accusations at anyone within arm's length. When an unexpected death happens in a crowd, Holmes narrows down what’s going on.

The Case of the Fragrant Blackmailer
Another adventure wherein Holmes tells Watson of an adventure during his ‘great hiatus’.
Posing as Sigerson aboard a steamer, he becomes entangled with a parfumier, Mme Bouvier, who, not unlike Charles Augustus Milverton, comes to greater wealth employing blackmail.

Though having grown out a beard and speaking with a flawless Norwegian accent, she discovers Holmes's true identity and thus blackmails him into her service, threatening to reveal his truth to the waiting clutches of the former Professor Moriarty’s henchmen at each port.

Holmes is thus indentured into service until the lady is found dead in her cabin with the door locked and barricaded from the inside…

The Confession of Anna Jarrow
Anna Jarrow was just released after 14 years in prison, yet had it not been for Holmes, her fate would have been in the gallows.

For all 14 of those years, there has been one final piece of the puzzle that Holmes had yet to put into place.

But Mrs Jarrow is not to be deterred, nor persuaded to change her vow of silence.
Will Holmes be able to unstop her mouth and get the closure that he wishes?

The Case of the Vanishing Venus
Mr. Edwin Pettigrew quite literally runs into Holmes and Watson in the street (Baker) in front of them as he spills out of a cab, emptying the contents of his briefcase and giving himself a rather nasty cut on his forehead.

He explains that his haste was due to a missing statue at the museum and he needs Holmes to investigate it on behalf of the museum’s benefactors.

How could a statue weighing hundreds of pounds be brought out of the museum, while under guard, and no one noticed?

And what does a dead and then, undead goldfish in a children’s pond have to do with the case?

True to the Canon

Most Sherlock Holmes stories by ACD were short stories. These short stories by S.F. Bennett are in the same vein as those by ACD and are well written. Well worth your time to read.

Charming fun stories in the spirit of the original Doyle works. Nothing mind-blowing but a cozy weekend read.

Better than most. Would have been better if Watson were more than a ‘ear’ for Sherlock to tell about a past case.
