So I picked up a cool find this week; a game that belonged to James Earl Jones and was gifted to his agents. It's moved around a couple of offices and apartments before it made it's way to me. They are selling their place and were ready to say goodbye.

Game is of course mint, but the unique thing about the game is that it has a couple of custom callouts from Mr. Jones. One of them says "Thanks Barb and Jeff!," the names of their agents, and another says something like "Flynn...I AM your father!" Flynn is James' son, who is 43 now so he was just a kid when the game was produced.

Definitely one of the cooler, odder pieces I've crossed paths with. Being in NYC can have it's perks for cool stuff like that.

Fortunately the custom ROM is fine as were the boards; the batteries were changed once (the ones in there had a 2006 expiration date on them). The previous owners said "someone from SEGA" came by to visit them in the late 90s and changed the batteries. The batteries in there currently were starting to rot but still worked and hadn't spread any visible damage.

I've reached out to some folks at Stern to see if they have any more info on this story. Game itself needs some work, some of the mechs are seized up and the DMD is dead, but it did start a game. Not sure when I'll have a chance to work on it but looking forward to it, never had this game before.

This is awesome! You should dump that custom sound rom chip and upload it to archive.org so we can preserve it!

Dude. Badass. So jelly!

Score! I take it he didn't sign the game , or you would have mentioned it. Still have to ask.

#9 23 days ago

Yeah, this is great! Thank you for sharing CrazyLevi

The game seems like it’s seen minimal use.

You are a lucky man.

Not that I've found!

So funky thing is the agent said she negotiated Jones' voice rights for this game. But, I'm of the understanding that Fred Young did all the voices on this game.

So not sure if they still had to pay him for some kind of "voice likeness" rights, or if the agent is just mistaken, or if Jones did in fact do voices for the game. It has been over 30 years, after all, and she negotiated many voiceover contracts for him over the years. She said all of those contracts have been sent to the Library of Congress, so unfortunately she can't produce it for me.

Use your EPROM burner to read, rather than write. Then just save the displayed output as a file.

#18 22 days ago

Yeah for sure - the ROMs needs a backup before it’s lost for good

#19 22 days ago

Thats is amazing story what a cool find and to have those sound ROMS is incredible! WTG Crazy L!

That is such a great story!

As for eeprom, https://a.co/d/5HYKiDy or https://a.co/d/1jdr1IA. It is pretty straight forward.

Or you could send em out and have https://www.actionpinball.com/roms.php do them.

Off topic, but is James Earl Jones from another timeline? Luke I am your father vs no I am your father... Flynn I am your father. Silly Mandela effect.

#21 22 days ago

That’s pretty badass. Thanks for sharing.

#22 22 days ago

Amazing find Levi. Dump that sound ROM ASAP! Would be a pity to lose that piece of pinball history.

#23 22 days ago

DE Star Wars going up in value now that everyone can change their games over to the REAL Darth Vader callouts!!

That’s such a radical score!!
Glad it went to you! See if someone local knows how to dump the ROMs

#24 22 days ago

That's an awesome find Levi. Congrats!

#25 22 days ago

I'm not sure if this is as cool as the Dio couch, but it is probably on the same level.

I can bring my laptop and reader to Allentown if you like.

#29 22 days ago

Now that’s pretty cool!

#30 22 days ago

I spent some time talking to him at a wrap party. He was a very kind and generous man. I would not have pegged him as a pinball player though. Congrats!

A friend of mine in the city who is a big time collector can bring the reader over to my place and dump the ROM. Once I get it set up (will be a little while)

Make sure to do both the CPU & Audio Roms. Did you ever confirm the CPU & Audio rom versions? Should show on boot. I’m very curious if these are a 1 off version of 1.02 or something

DMD wasn't working at all when I tested it out before moving it.

Once I get it set up and working I'll have more info.

Great find! Thanks for sharing, and please remove the batteries and install nvram before there's any damage from a leak.

#38 20 days ago

The old batteries were of course removed, I'm not that dumb!

Will install a remote holder.

Plan on trying to set it up this weekend. Have three games moving out (GNR, Space Odyssey, and Vampire) so I'll have some room.

I just worked on a couple of DESW recently and one thing that can cause only the DMD to not work (but otherwise the machine seems to work) is the high voltage on the Data East power supply. If it loses the +68 volts, then only the DMD stops working. And that is a common failure.

Cool find, for sure! Good luck getting it working and I'll be waiting for the EPROM contents, too.

As a Star Wars expert and collector I’ll be waiting for that day u are bored with it
