A British start-up scattering rocks on fields to stall climate change has won a $5 million (£3.8 million) prize backed by Elon Musk.

Scientists at the London-based company Undo take planet-warming carbon dioxide out of the air by speeding up a natural process called rock weathering.

Every year silicate rocks such as basalt naturally take more than a billion tonnes of CO₂ out of the air by reacting with carbonic acid in rainwater, forming a solid mineral that locks away the polluting gas for millions of years. The team at Undo speed up the process by crushing silicate rocks into a fine powder, with a much bigger surface area, before spreading it on fields to react with rainwater. The powder also helps farmers by boosting
