A trans student has blasted Enoch Burke amid accusations that the sacked teacher has been using his dispute with Wilson’s Hospital School “as a way of promoting himself and getting attention”.

Jenny Maguire, gender equality officer at Trinity College Dublin students’ union, argued that the trans teenager whom Burke refused to address by their chosen pronoun should be “the sole focus” rather than Burke’s campaign.

“Every student should have the opportunity to express themselves fully. That student’s existence and life isn’t up for debate, and a teacher making it about themselves is incredibly unprofessional and so hateful. It doesn’t belong anywhere near a classroom,” Maguire said.
