On April 21, 2018, two fishermen found a woman’s body in a mangrove in Kovalam, a city in Kerala, India. It was, according to BBC News, decomposed and decapitated.
Just a month earlier Liga Skromane, a 33-year-old Latvian tourist, had gone missing while staying at a nearby Ayurvedic resort with her sister, Ilze.
The Independent reports that Liga, who was seeking treatment at the resort for depression, had gone out to buy cigarettes, never to return.

Certain of foul play, Ilze launched a campaign to bring Liga’s killers to justice. After four years, that is finally happening.
On Tuesday, the Indian court found two men – 31-year-old Umesh and 28-year-old Udayakumar – guilty of raping and murdering Skromane. They were given life sentences.
One of them – though it’s unclear which – was a tour guide. It is believed that the men drugged Skromane with marijuana before raping and strangling her.
In addition to life sentences, Umesh and Udayakumar were each fined the equivalent of $2,000 to be paid to Skromane’s family – including Ilze, who watched the court proceedings online from Dublin.

India’s policy regarding sexual violence has fallen under scrutiny in recent years. In 2012, a 23-year-old woman was gang-raped and murdered on a Delhi bus.
Widespread outrage forced the government to introduce tougher anti-rape laws, including the death penalty on rare occasions.

If you, like me, aren't a fan of "the big light" (meaning, the abrasive overhead light found on many a ceiling), these little illuminators are a stellar alternative. They emit a soft glow that can be adjusted with a simple tap, and their minimal, sleek design instantly elevates any surface.
On that note, they're ideal for adding some mood lighting to your dining table while hosting, but they can also be used as reading lights on end tables, desks and nightstands, or even outdoors. There's a reason more than 10,000 people purchased this cooling sheet set in the past month — several reasons, in fact. For starters, it's made of brushed microfiber that feels much softer than its affordable price tag would suggest, and the moisture-wicking material will help you stay dry while you snooze.
Add to that the fact that these sheets are pill-, wrinkle- and fade-resistant? No wonder sleepers are comparing them to pricier bedding brands like Brooklinen. This is as low as they've been since Black Friday.
For many of us, the area under our sink is like a black hole crammed with countless cleaning products, trash bags, sponges ... and who knows what else. So when we go to retrieve a sponge or bottle of wood cleaner, it takes forever to actually find what we're looking for. No more! These handy organizers help keep things tidy, with different tiers for holding items large and small. The bottom trays also slide out, so you won't have to reach into the depths of your cabinet to grab anything. Oh, and they're currently within a dollar of their lowest price on record.
If snoozing has become a pain in the neck — in the all-too literal sense — this contoured pillow just might be your ticket to a comfier night's sleep. Its curved design more closely aligns with the shape of your head and neck, offering pressure relief and gentle support. Plus, its extra-firm density won't go limp over time. It's currently down to its lowest price in about a year (over 35% off), and this large size actually costs less than the small version!
Whether you're a seasoned green thumb or giving gardening a go for the first time this spring, a reliable pair of clippers is essential. Yahoo Executive Editor Nicole Sforza swears by these top-sellers, which she says "can turn a jungle into a primrose path."
She adds, "I've owned them for several years and they work perfectly every single time. They have a soft nonslip grip and a coating on the blades so they easily glide through even thick stems. They haven't rusted on me, either. Experienced gardeners say they cut like a 'hot knife through butter.' That makes them easy to handle, even if you can't garden like you used to because of arthritis or decreased grip strength. A self-cleaning groove helps keep the blade from sticking to sap or debris — a big selling point for experienced gardeners. I especially love the easy-lock notch that keeps them closed when I'm not using them."
At over 50% off, they're down to their best price in years.
Lying out on the deck or by the pool is about to get even more heavenly, thanks to these ergonomic chaises that'll make you feel like you're floating. The lights are built to endure harsh weather conditions if necessary, and you'll get up to 6,000 hours of use out of them. Plus, they're within a dollar of their lowest price ever.
Thousands of Amazon shoppers love these sturdy containers, which have airtight seals to keep food fresh. Been wanting to reduce the amount of plastic in your kitchen? These containers are made of glass — but not just any glass. We're talking about borosilicate glass, which is used on thermal tiles in space shuttles.
Not only does it conveniently allow you to see what's packed inside, it's oven-safe up to 1,040°F. You can also store these containers in the freezer if you have leftovers you know you won't get to right away. At less than $4 per container, this is a fabulous value.
Now that the days are getting warmer, you might be ready to swap out your hot latte for some cold brew — and enjoying a chilled drink is about to get a whole lot easier (and faster), thanks to this speedy cooler. Just keep it in the freezer, and when you're ready to use, pour your hot java inside. Swirl it around for one minute, then pour the drink over some ice and ta-da! Brings new meaning to the term "instant coffee" (or tea, or wine, or ... you get the idea). This is as low as it's been since last summer, so snag it while it's over 50% off.
Oven mitts, pot holders and kitchen towels need to be replaced every so often, and if yours are ready to be tossed, this No. 1 bestselling set should be your next move. Because it's KitchenAid, you know you're getting a quality product, and what sets the included oven mitt apart is the fact that it has nonstick silicone grips for more confident handling of hot pots and pans. At over 40% off, it's down to one of its best prices ever.
Smelly fridge? Yeah, not so appetizing. But this unassuming stink slayer works for up to 10 years (yes, you read that right) to keep things fresh. All you do is place it inside and, well, that's actually it. Sorry, baking soda — you've been replaced. This little doodad can also go in closets, drawers, your car ... anywhere that could use some stench removal. This is the lowest it's been since last summer, so scoop it up while you can.
Finding just one decent knife for fifty bucks can be a challenge these days, let alone an entire collection. That's why this one — which has been slashed to just $3 more than its record-low price — is such a steal.
I got this set for my sister, who says that while "everything has been staying sharp so far," she appreciates that it "comes with a sharpening steel" and "has the knife styles I frequently need." She also prefers "a minimal aesthetic" in her kitchen and says this set is "the opposite of an eyesore."
Never fight with your family members over power outlets again. This electrifying gadget boasts five AC outlets and four USB ports, enough for everyone to charge their devices at once. Oh, and this top-seller is so much sleeker than having a power strip on your floor (and there's no way you'll trip over it). No, it's not the most massive discount, but I've yet to see this top-seller on sale for less.
Never lose your luggage, purse, car — anything, really — again. Just toss one of these inside the item you want to track and you'll be alerted of its whereabouts via your phone. The deal on this four-pack brings each tag down to about $20 (they typically retail for around $25 a pop). Grab a few for your, er, forgetful family members!
I bought these for my mom as a gift, and as someone who can't stand the feeling of earbuds in her ears, she's obsessed. The cushy padding and lightweight design make them super comfy to wear, and the fact that they have up to 50 hours of battery life is the cherry on the sundae. Markdowns on these are rare, and they hardly ever dip lower than they are now.
How do I love these leggings? Let me count the ways: For starters, the material is so soft and smooth that it rivals Lululemon's, and the wide waistband provides ample support without feeling too constricting. The fabric is also moisture-wicking to prevent me from feeling super sweaty while I'm working out, and they pass the squat test. Stock up while you can save $9 each.
It doesn't get much easier or breezier than this flowy top, which resembles the classic boyfriend shirt, but with pretty ruching at the cuffs. It comes in a bevy of stripes, but if you prefer solids, you can opt for a handful of those as well. And oh yeah: This top-seller's down to its best price of all time.
On those mornings when you don't feel like assembling a whole outfit but still want to look put together, a jumpsuit like this one is an effortlessly chic solution. It's just slouchy enough to keep you comfy throughout the day without looking baggy, and you can pair it with a tee or layer it under a light jacket — the possibilities are endless. At 40% off, it's down to a record low.
There's no such thing as having too many warm-weather tees, and this one offers a bit more coverage if that's something you prefer. The slightly oversized fit is on trend, and the shirt can be tucked in for a bit more shape or left loose for a flowy look. Prices vary between colors, but classic white and black are down to a mere 10 bucks.
Yahoo Senior Beauty Editor Jennifer Romolini says, "I've tried a lot of eye creams. And, for my money, CeraVe makes the best drugstore depuffing/under-eye brightening treatment currently on the market. Not only does it feel good on your skin (absorbs quickly, no gross pilling), it's also fragrance-free, hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic. Olivia Wilde also loves it, along with thousands of reviewers, who say it's like Botox in a cream. I'm not sure about that claim, but I do know this is a quality skin care staple at a price everyone can afford."
Say cheese! Your journey to brighter teeth just got a lot easier, thanks to this whitening kit. All you do is apply the gel to your teeth via the pen for 30-60 minutes a day, and after five days, you should see a difference (as much as 10 shades whiter). You'll get about 30 treatments out of this pack. At 60% off, this is as low as it's been since Black Friday — now, that's something to smile about.
Our senior beauty editor said she was so thrilled when she saw this deal, she "could barely type." Why is that? For starters, this serum comes from a well-respected brand and its star ingredient is hyaluronic acid, a hydration agent that can help plump the skin for a smoother appearance.
"Since we lose moisture and elasticity as we age, the humectant hyaluronic acid, an ingredient which binds to water — and can hold a whopping 1,000 times its weight in water — is key to any quality anti-aging skin care regimen," she says. "You'd be hard-pressed to find a better hyaluronic acid serum than this award-winning version." Among the other concerns it targets? Dark circles, fine lines, dark spots ... plus, it's within two bucks of its lowest price ever. Need any more convincing it belongs in your cart?
Your morning hair routine is about to get a lot easier, thanks to this No. 1 bestselling multitasker. It dries and styles all at the same time, meaning you won't have to juggle a brush in one hand and a blow dryer in the other; use it to give yourself a sleek, smooth blowout or wavy curls. At just $31, it's far more affordable than the Dyson Airwrap — and it's never dipped lower than this.
Bill Gates Bought His Daughter A $16 Million Horse Farm As A Graduation Gift — But Ex-Wife Melinda Says The Kids Were Raised Very 'Middle Class'

If your dad is Bill Gates, you're probably not getting a Starbucks gift card for graduating college.
In 2018, Jennifer Gates walked off the Stanford stage and onto a 124-acre, $15.82 million horse farm in North Salem, New York. According to Architectural Digest, the lavish estate was a graduation gift from her billionaire parents—and came complete with rolling pastures, three parcels of land, and proximity to New York City for her future studies.

But in case that sounds too much like the plot of "Succession: Equestrian Edition," Melinda Gates would like to remind everyone: their kids were absolutely raised "middle class."
"I think it was much more of an upbringing like I grew up in," she told The New York Times in 2024. "A very middle-class household where money did dictate whether I got an extra pair of shoes that year or not."

Yes, the Gates kids had an allowance. Yes, they had to make wish lists and wait for birthdays or Christmas. "We absolutely did not just buy them things," Melinda added. "They either had to buy with their allowance or put it on their wish list, that maybe they'd get it from their grandparents or us."
That approach extended beyond what showed up under the tree. She said she warned her children not to discuss how they traveled: "You know, you really are not allowed to tell other people how we flew on this trip... otherwise it will separate you from other children."
Still, the "middle-class" upbringing ran alongside a real estate trail fit for royalty. In 2016, Bill Gates dropped $38 million on properties in Wellington, Florida—also to support Jennifer's elite equestrian training. The area, known as the winter equestrian capital, has neighbors like Michael Bloomberg and Bruce Springsteen. The farm included a mansion, a new 20-stall barn, paddocks, a schooling ring, and enough acreage to host a horse parade.

At the time of the horse farm graduation gift, Jennifer was 22. Now 28, she's a medical student and married to Olympic show jumper Nayel Nassar, and still active in the equestrian world. But her mom has stayed firm on the message: the wealth didn't define their values.
"I went to school with some of those kids at Duke University," Melinda said. "And I vowed to myself that if I ever had resources at my disposal, those were not the kind of children I wanted to raise."
So yes, Jennifer Gates got a horse farm for graduating—but she also got an allowance and a financial reality check. As far as billionaire parenting goes, that might actually be the middle ground.
Trump reportedly drafted an executive order for ‘a disciplined reorganization’ of the State Department that would shut down embassies and cut climate change and refugee offices

Secretary of State Marco Rubio denies the report that President Donald Trump has drafted an executive order to overhaul the State Department.
The Department of State could be in for a massive overhaul. A draft executive order obtained by The New York Times shows what would be one of the largest reorganizations of the agency since its founding in 1789. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio denies there are changes in the works.
In President Donald Trump’s latest effort to overhaul federal government offices, he reportedly drafted an executive order that would drastically alter the State Department.
The executive order would eliminate nearly all of the State Department’s operations in Africa, shut down embassies, and cut offices at the agency’s headquarters that address climate change as well as refugee, democracy, and human rights issues, according to a 16-page draft order obtained by The New York Times.

According to the document, this would be a “disciplined reorganization” of the agency to “streamline mission delivery” and cut “waste, fraud, and abuse.” If the executive order is enacted, this would mark one of the most significant reorganizations of the State Department since its 1789 inception, according to Bloomberg. The changes would need to be made by Oct. 1, the document shows.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, however, claims there are no such plans in the works.
“This is fake news,” Rubio wrote in an X post on Sunday morning. “The @nytimes falls victim to another hoax."
When asked for comment about the executive order draft, White House spokesperson Anna Kelly pointed Fortune to Rubio’s X post.

The NYT last week had also reported the Trump administration could cut nearly 50% of the State Department’s funding next fiscal year, according to an internal document.
Other changes included in the draft would require involvement from Congress and “no doubt be challenged by lawmakers,” according to the NYT, and could face lawsuits.
“Now, instead of bending policy to the facts, Rubio's State Department intends to censor facts—about the dictators Trump is supporting—to fit the policy,” former U.S. Representative Tom Malinowski wrote on X. “It's embarrassing and illegal, but it won't shield him from accountability.” Malinowski served as assistant secretary of state for democracy, human rights, and labor during the Obama administration.
According to documents obtained by the NYT, the following changes—and more that aren’t listed—could be made at the State Department:

Lay off career diplomats and civil service employees
End foreign service exam for aspiring diplomats
Outline new hiring criteria
Expand artificial intelligence use to help draft documents
Eliminate regional bureaus
Cut the bureau of African affairs

Eliminate bureau overseeing democracy and human rights issues
Narrow Fulbright scholarships
End fellowship contract with Howard University
Representatives for Rubio and the U.S. Department of State didn’t immediately respond to Fortune’s request for comment.

Captain makes once-in-a-lifetime sighting while scanning horizon off US coast: 'Everybody was screaming and hollering'

Two North Atlantic right whales, which are critically endangered, were spotted off the coast of Florida this past March.
Gulf Coast News reported that Captain Ryan Goebel from Sea Trek Charters first saw the whales by Fort Myers Beach.
"I'm driving in like normal, just like always," Goebel told the news outlet. "And I look off to the left side, and I see something in the distance ... So I pop up binoculars, and as soon as I pull them up, I see a blowhole shoot up in the air, and I'm like, that's a whale."

Sea Trek Charters mate Chris Paul also commented to Gulf Coast News, "Everybody was screaming and hollering and jumping around, pushing everybody out of the way to try to get pictures. It was wild."
The whales were then seen a day later near Caxambas Pass, which is close to Marco Island.
The whales are named Koala and Curlew. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says they are named after koala- and curlew shorebird-shaped callosities, respectively. Callosities are rough, raised patches of skin on right whales' heads.
Koala and Curlew's appearance is even more incredible considering that, per the NOAA, North Atlantic right whales have only been seen four times in the Gulf of Mexico since 2000.

An assessment of Curlew in April 2024 concluded that there is a high probability she is currently pregnant, but she hasn't been seen with a calf since then.
Pregnancies are a big deal for North Atlantic right whales because of their critically endangered status. There are only about 370 of them left. According to the World Wildlife Fund, fishing gear and warming oceans are some of their biggest threats.
The NOAA advises that everyone should stay 500 yards away from whales in the wild. It's also important to report sightings to 877-WHALE-HELP ((877) 942-5343).

“He went to go start the fire, and he realized he didn’t have any fire starter. So he just grabbed the gas can that we have,” Thompson's partner, Kimberly Graybeal, recalled to the outlet.
Explaining that the gas can then exploded while Thompson, 25, was holding it, Graybeal added, "It’s not something that we expected."
“His whole body went back, and his arms and his legs went out. He just freaking flew," she continued.
According to Graybeal, Thompson had an intense reaction to the incident. “Robert was on the ground rolling, screaming for his life. He was just screaming, ‘Please help me! Please! I’m dying! Please help me,' " she told the outlet.

Graybeal added that Thompson managed to get his jacket off his body while she ran into the house to get water. A nearby neighbor, meanwhile, called 911.
However, Graybeal opted to drive Thompson to St. Luke’s Magic Valley Medical Center instead of waiting for help to arrive.
“The hospital told me when I took him there that if I would’ve waited for an ambulance, he would’ve died,” she told East Idaho News.
Thompson was later airlifted to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls, where he was placed in a medically induced coma.
East Idaho News reported that he has third-degree burns on his torso, “including his neck and face.”
