Pokemon: Close Combat is a beginner-friendly 2D fighting game currently in development by BattleCapacity. First released to the public as a demo in February 2023, Close Combat has quickly grown in popularity on the back of its charming, hand-drawn animation. Its ever-growing roster consists entirely of fighting-type Pokemon, from rushdown characters like Primeape and Galarian Zapdos to zoners like Toxicroak and Falinks. By taking inspiration from iconic fighting game franchises like Street Fighter, Close Combat achieves the feel of a classic arcade fighter with a fresh, expressive cast.

Since release, Close Combat has updated frequently with new characters debuting on roughly two-month intervals. The game has grown to boast over a dozen unique fighters, a Wobbuffet-staffed training mode and a single-player gauntlet harboring a secret final boss, with many more additions and fighters on the horizon. Throughout, its developers have interacted extensively with the player base, determining new additions to the game's roster via public polls and posting weekly developer updates on Discord and X. If you're looking for an active online community, a competitive tournament scene, and a place to mow down hordes of opponents with a cartwheeling Bewear, you've come to the right place!

New Combatant: Kommo-o

It’s at times like these you almost regret joining the tournament - blaring neon lights and the jeers of the crowd overwhelming your senses, a far cry from the sounds of the sea and the tranquility of the land where you met your Kommo-o.

But a dragon's lair is wherever it chooses, and as the glowing sanctuary forms around your companion, you can feel it again - the inner clarity, the fierce protectiveness, and the beating heart of the world, chiming in harmony with your pulse.

The crowd, hushed now by the clanging of scales, sees only the pride of a dragon, but underneath the fierce exterior is a vast, vast soul - a soul patiently awaiting your command.

In this sanctum, let that soul sing.

Watch the tournament here, and prepare for a deluge of colors next patch - all top 8 players received prizes!

The next combatant to be added is a mystery, though perhaps in response to the recent changes, the fans' clamoring for a grappler is getting hard to ignore. Nobody knows if the league will meet these demands, but either way this mystery 'mon is expected to be ready to battle by late April to early May.

After more than a week of brutal competition, Marshadow has emerged as Mirage Island's champion! Look forward to its arrival in the patch after next.
