I have to say, I love, love, love Chromebooks. I think that they are an incredible option for 95% of people who need a laptop of sorts. I am a big believer in buying a machine for what you are going to use it, not what you MIGHT use it for. The majority of people use their laptop for social media, email, photo viewing, and document writing, and Chromebooks excel on all of these fronts. Especially with Chromebooks, because everything is backed up in the cloud, there is very little fear of losing all of their documents. Now, as for the Acer Chromebook Plus 514. The whole idea of a "plus" Chromebook is that is has a bare minimum of specs for a computer that will handle more and future proof it to some degree. Also, there is a big push for AI on a OS level, and these plus machines will handle all of this better. This Acer is nice. Let's get that out of the way. It feels secure, has a good keyboard and track pad, and has a very usable touchscreen. The battery is very good, as long as you don't have very intensive apps running. The IO is great. two USB-C, one USB-A, and an SD card reader. There is a little built in camera cover for privacy which is also great and should come on every camera! I will say, while the screen is 1080p and technically HD, it leaves a lot to be desired. My tablet and phone are both OLED and have a fast refresh rate, and using the screen on this Chromebook is a definite downgrade. I would like to see a nicer screen on future models. Here's the thing. I have used many, many Chromebooks in the past, and I don't think that the Plus and the AI push are anything special. I have used CBs since about 2013, and while there has been a steady flow of updates and quality of life changes, I have to say, that the experience remains largely unchanged, for better of for worse. That is to say, that using this Acer Chromebook Plus isn't very different than using my 2018 Chromebook, which makes the experience entirely dependent on screen, keyboard, and IO. The price is right, so I can't nitpick very much. If you are looking for something to use for the next 5-8 years and know it's going to work, it's hard to beat the quality at this price, but if the idea that these Chromebook plus models are going to be big game changers, I haven't seen it yet. There are some nice tricks that this can do like make a sort of unique wall paper, but I think AI is still too young to really use its full potential. Not to mention the amount of data and info that you are essentially giving up for what amounts to little more than a parlor trick at this point. Chromebooks still straddle this weird place of simplicity at the risk of limitations, but as a first computer, as a secondary device, as a way to get rid of bulky, slow laptops, at the price, Chromebooks cannot be beat, and this Acer 514 is a shining example of everything Chromebooks have to offer, for better or worse.
