Etymology 1
[edit]Sino-Vietnamese word from 唐 (“road inside a temple”). Doublet of đàng and đằng. For the rime correspondance, compare đang vs. đương, đàng hoàng vs. đường hoàng, cúng dàng vs. cúng dường, and kim cang vs. kim cương.
Alternatively, from Proto-Southwestern Tai *daːŋᴬ² (“road; way”) (whence Thai ทาง (taang), Lao ທາງ (thāng), Northern Thai ᨴᩤ᩠ᨦ, Lü ᦑᦱᧂ (taang), Shan တၢင်း (táang)),[1] further from Middle Chinese 唐 (dang), which is possibly from ultimately Proto-Austroasiatic *glɔːŋ.[2][3]
Displaced native Vietnamese sá, inherited from Proto-Austroasiatic *kraʔ, now fossilized and only found in compounds like đường sá (“roads”) and sá cày (“furrow”).
