Two people were killed and six others injured at Florida State University in Tallahassee on Thursday, authorities said, after a college student opened fire on campus.

The deceased victims were not students, officials said at a late-afternoon news conference, where they identified the suspect as Phoenix Ikner, whom they described as the 20-year-old son of a sheriff’s deputy in Leon County, where FSU is. Ikner, who was allegedly using his mother’s gun, was shot by police who had swarmed to the campus and was later hospitalized.
