EDDIE HYDE, lives in today's world. What the poor schnook lacks in brains, he makes up in kindness. During my fifty-odd years as an orthopaedic surgeon. I kept a small notebook (and paper napkins) on which I recorded incidents I thought were unusual. Most were humorous, some tragic. After I retired I started writing vignettes based on these notes. Several were published in obscure magazines. Then I read an article by Lawrence Block (a REAL writer) in which he stated that if you can write a short story you can write a book. I took him at his word, embellished several of the vignettes and have now published twelve books. Living off twenty-dollar royalty checks ain't easy, but it beats bagging groceries at Safeway.

The books are all listed on Amazon.com. They are in paperback and ebook format.

Eddie Hyde is an ex-con who’s released on parole and is determined to go straight. His new boss, Cruz, makes Hyde’s life a nightmare, but Hyde knows he has to keep his nose clean and stay out of trouble. He develops a crush on his parole officer, but keeps that in check too. When a chance encounter puts Hyde in contact with a high rolling drug dealer Hyde finds himself dipping into what he thinks is a minor recreational drug one night as a way to relieve some of his stress. When crazy things begin happening to Hyde he has to figure out a way to make it stop before he finally spirals out of control for good.

This was a fun book. It was a unique spin on Robert Louis Stevenson’s Jekyll and Hyde. Adding a super marijuana and some new fangled chemistry to the plot made it more current. There’s a certain amount of violence, swearing and sexual reference in Hyde that readers might want to be aware of, but nothing too severe in my opinion. A gritty story calls for some gritty dialogue and I’d classify this book as dark and gritty.

Mr. Friedman is an adept storyteller. He does a good job of laying out a firm plot foundation and does a nice job with character development. Hyde is a short book and it took me less than a day to read it. I appreciated the ending and found it to be a satisfying conclusion to the story.

As the synopsis for this book suggests, this is a modern day version of the classic "Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" in that a chemical starts the process of a man switching back and forth between the good man he wants to be and the evil side of his personality. I enjoyed the classic by Robert Stevenson; however, I enjoyed Barry Friedman's much more probably because of the modern setting and language as well as the exciting plot twists in virtually every chapter. Once I started reading, I finished "Hyde" in one evening because I just couldn't put down the book until I found out how the story ended. I have to put this book on my list of favorite psychological thrillers. - Sheila Rae Myers, Author

4.0 out of 5 stars A interesting take on Jekyll and Hyde
Reviewed in Canada on July 10, 2013
Loved the book and the writing. A Jekyll and Hyde story that deals with more than psychological change. It involves physiological change along the lines of incredible Hulk, but in reverse. The book bespeaks of our hidden monsters, and what we can all be capable of.

3.0 out of 5 stars Jeckell and Hyde in modern America
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 19, 2013
It was fine as a piece of writing but being based on the Dr Jeckell and Mr Hyde story it was of course well known and predictable. There were a few plot holes in it, nothing major but there nonetheless. Not too demanding, holiday read type of book

As you can guess by the title, it is a story about Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, but with an interesting and novel twist. Well written and well recommended.
