It occurred to me a while back that a lot of older people leaned heavily on rigid systems to survive. A book of etiquette, for example, seems arbitrary and stifling today, but if you were someone who had a lot of trouble deciphering unspoken rules, having everything written out was probably extremely helpful, especially if everyone in your circles was also expected to do it. 50 years later, the book is antiquated and you seem like a uptight bitch for getting upset when no one respects or even knows those rules anymore. I find that few people are willing to consider the possibility of neurodivergence in older people because they come across as just more inflexible boomers who are "set in their ways". There are plenty of young people who probably perceive themselves as largely nonconforming who are actually just abiding by a different, yet equally inflexible, set of rules. (Alternatively, one might become so scared of being rigid that one's ability to set boundaries and standards falls apart and is surrended to more forceful personalities around you.) Imagining yourself to be too clever for all this is a trap in itself!
