Quick Answers

What is the significance of Sylvain's Crest of Gautier? toggle section
The Crest of Gautier, borne by Sylvain, signifies his noble status and power. However, Sylvain views it as a burden, a power he didn't choose. He acknowledges the importance of his lineage, particularly for succession, as a Crest-bearing child could lead House Gautier. Sylvain strives to shift the societal view on Crests and Relics, promoting a lifestyle where they aren't deemed essential.

Profile[]

Early life[]

Sylvain was born as the son of Margrave Matthias of House Gautier in the Imperial Year 1160 through his second wife. He had one older half-brother, Miklan, though Sylvain had a contentious relationship with him as Miklan was born Crestless while Sylvain was the one to inherit the Crest of Gautier. Feeling deprived of his birthright and outright ignored by their father in favor of Sylvain, Miklan had attempted numerous times to murder Sylvain, only to fail each time and eventually resulting in his banishment. Despite Miklan's aggressiveness towards him, Sylvain understood why his brother loathed him.

As future heir to House Gautier, Sylvain grew up with his fellow future Faerghus heirs and childhood friends Dimitri, Felix, and Ingrid.

Academy Phase[]

Sylvain enrolls in Garreg Mach Monastery Officers Academy in Imperial Year 1180, and joins the Blue Lions.

During the Verdant Rain Moon of 1180, Byleth's class is tasked with subduing a bandit group led by Sylvain's older brother Miklan, whom had stolen House Gautier's Hero's Relic, the Lance of Ruin. If Sylvain is being taught by Byleth, he can be among the forces confronting his brother. Should the two meet in battle, Miklan expresses his lifelong contempt for Sylvain inheriting the Crest of Gautier. Sylvain retorts that it was never his fault that he inherited the Crest nor that their family effectively disowned him. He is horrified when his brother transforms into a Demonic Beast, but with the assistance of Byleth and his classmates, his brother is defeated. While he somewhat laments his fallen brother's death, he reclaims the Lance of Ruin. Back at the monastery, the Lance is given to Rhea in order to return to House Gautier.

Alternatively, Byleth can refuse to give it to her as Sylvain has received permission by his father, Margrave Gautier, to keep the lance as its rightful wielder. Rhea bequeaths the lance to him under the condition that he uses it wisely in service to the Church and Monastery.

Personality[]

Caring for his friends and admired as an older brother figure in his class, Sylvain is a perpetual skirt-chaser and often attempts to woo women with sweet words to a fault, with the most notable example including Ingrid's grandmother when he was only eight. He is fond of women, but his easygoing, shallow, womanizing behavior stems from the fact that he feels unable to form proper romances, and so he dates around without any particular commitment. Despite his light-hearted manner, he is often inconsiderate with his words around women, which cause him unintentional harm - even admitting in a support with Ingrid that the truth hurts. This builds up unintentional notoriety on himself, such as Flayn avoiding him for that exact reason, even though he wanted to pass her a message from Byleth.

As the game progresses, Sylvain decides to make a change for himself by being who he is, and not what his Crest dictates him to be. Due to his philandering, his proposals are often met with skepticism, which in turn prompts him to provide proof that he intends to turn a new leaf. In his married endings, Sylvain treats all of his children with equal respect, regardless if they bear Crests or not.

Despite the impression he gives off to people, Sylvain's actually quite intelligent, being shown to easily grasp complicated magic formulas at a glance when magic isn't even one of his areas of expertise, which is referenced in his budding talent of Reason. In his supports with Annette, it is seen that he intentionally leads people to think he is not very smart because he dislikes the pressure of people's expectations and them believing they know what he is capable of, saying he finds it suffocating. In his supports with Dedue, Sylvain explains his suspicions behind the Tragedy of Duscur, as Duscur and Faerghus had enjoyed good relations up until that point and the fact that the king's elite guard was effortlessly slaughtered, a feat not plausible for a smaller, less skilled military.

Sylvain holds a strong level of disdain for the way Crests influence the lives of those in Fódlan, with a bulk of his dialogue throughout the story focusing on their negative impact, and showing sympathy and envy in his supports with Mercedes and Byleth respectively. Furthermore, he holds noble women in contempt, as he believes they show interest in him solely due to his Crest in an attempt to curry favor with him without actually getting to know him. Despite this, in conversations with Byleth, Sylvain admits that hating women is merely an "easy answer" and seems to recognize that he cannot blame them for all his problems. It is because of his Crest that he had a rough childhood with Miklan, though he did not hold a grudge against his brother because he already knew the reason behind his aggression. Following Miklan's death however, Sylvain only held pity for him.

Recruitment[]

Sylvain will automatically be recruited if Byleth chooses to teach the Blue Lions house in Chapter 1. If Byleth chose to teach any other house, Sylvain can transfer to their class if they have high enough Charm and Reason. The player can decrease the required threshold if they have a support rank with him, and upon reaching a B+ rank, he may ask to join their class on a free weekday (even if their Charm or Reason is not high enough).

If Byleth is female, Sylvain will immediately accept a transfer to her class from as early as Chapter 2, regardless of her current Charm and Reason.

Overall[]

Subjective: The following part of this article is based upon the editor's personal experiences and opinions, and therefore may not be applicable for all readers.

Sylvain is similar to Ferdinand and Leonie in that he is a well-rounded physical fighter who does his best in cavalry roles. They each have similar growth rates, though Sylvain has better Magic growth and a budding talent in Reason, along with a better spell list. These come at a slight cost of Luck and Dexterity. Sylvain also has a Crest of Gautier, improving his Mt when using Combat Arts. This allows him to deal impressive bonus damage, especially when used with the Swift Strikes Combat Art. It also allows him to use the full power of the Lance of Ruin by using the exclusive Combat Art Ruined Sky, which deals massive damage to Dragons and Fliers.

Given Sylvain's unique budding talent and middling Magic growth, he can be a decent Dark Knight, but he won't deal magic damage that can compete with dedicated mages. Additionally, going as a Dark Knight means giving up Lancefaire, which can hinder his physical damage. He can, however, take physical hits much better than other options such as Lysithea and Annette, and his strengths in Lances and Riding make it much easier for him to train for the class than his competition. If training him to be a Dark Knight, it is advised for him to temporarily be classed as a Mage to get access to Fiendish Blow to offset his lower Magic. Great Knight makes for a viable alternative thanks to Sylvain's strength in Axes and Lances, though it will require setting Heavy Armor as one of his goals, and will come at a significant cost in Speed. In any event, Paladin is often preferred over Great Knight by veterans for Lance-centric combat, while Wyvern Lord or War Master are better for Axe-centric styles.

Sylvain's only skill weakness is in Bows, which isn't a problem for him and should not hinder him from getting to any classes he may want, though it can still be worthwhile to get Archer for Hit +20 due to his average-at-best Dexterity. While the most logical path would be to make him a Cavalier and then Paladin, doing so can result in his Speed being penalized, as both classes will reduce his Speed growth by 10%. If one wishes to make him more of a physical character, making him a Brigand, Wyvern Rider, and Wyvern Lord are all good choices, though he might take a little while to train up his Flying skill. Classing him as a Brigand is advisable in any event, as it gives him Death Blow when mastered.

Another often overlooked advantage that Sylvain has is his large number of Support chains. This makes him a great contributor to Linked Attacks and Gambit Boosts, though his lack of long-range spells does require him to be close to his allies to help them out, and many of his supports max out at a B or B+. As such, it's often more useful for his allies to support him on his own attacks or Gambits.

Overall, Sylvain is a highly flexible character who is valuable to pick up in any playthrough. While his growths may not excel in any one area, his versatility is hard to match, and he can be molded to just about any playstyle the player may want.

Here's Sylvain, the gallant flirt of the Blue Lions! He's the next in line to the title of Margrave Gautier!
The incorrigible Sylvain can't resist an opportunity to show off for the ladies—a quirk that often earns him the ire of his old friend Ingrid.
But despite his flippant demeanor, Sylvain is surprisingly good at picking up on what others are really thinking. It seems his sensitive soul is the product of a troubled life at home...
There's a vulnerable person behind that breezy smile—kind of an attractive quality, if you ask me! (Don't take that as an invitation, Sylvain.)

Hanging with Tens Sylvain
Sylvain, consummate ladies' man of the Blue Lion House, is making a splash in his swimsuit outfit! True to form, he's gone for a wild, mischievous style.
But even when he's in his beachwear, his rakish sense of style still comes through loud and clear. Check out the fashionable sunglasses and necklace he's wearing!
Sylvain's not used to such hot weather, so he's brought a cold drink along with him. I'm glad to see he's staying hydrated...he could use some cooling down.
In typical Sylvain fashion, he's been doing the rounds on the beach, chatting to every pretty young lady he sees. He'd better not get too carried away though, or else he'll have to answer to Ingrid and the professors!

Sylvain is the heir apparent of House Gautier, one of the most prestigious houses of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus. But with today being the spring festival, he's come dressed as a hare, apparently!
The orange of Sylvain's attire stands out, resembling a carrot. The daisy accents dotted throughout and the semitransparent cloak are wonderful touches as well!
What I really want to focus on is his lance that has a massive carrot on its tip! It looks like it'd take a while to chew through such a big carrot!
Sylvain looks excited to hop all around the spring festival in his bunny outfit, but he'll have to keep his cool when hopping up to the women he approaches.

Recruitment/Warriors[]

Sylvain will automatically be recruited if Shez chooses to join the Blue Lion house in Chapter 2, though he will be playable in the following chapter. If Shez chose to join any other house, Sylvain cannot be recruited whatsoever.

Sylvain will only be playable during Scarlet Blaze and Golden Wildfire through the Record Keeper during a New Game+ file, as long as that file has completed Azure Gleam data.

Etymology[]

Sylvain is the French form of the Latin name Silvanus, which means "of the woods." It may also refer to the Roman deity who protects field and forest. José is the French, Spanish, and Portuguese form of the Hebrew given name Joseph ("Jehovah shall increase"). Gautier is a French variant of the German name Walter ("ruler of the army"); the most prominent figures to bear the name is a Saint who founded a monastery for women and a minstrel known for his crass and erotic poetry.

Trivia[]

  • Sylvain shares his English voice actor, Joe Brogie, with Linus.
  • Sylvain has a unique post-timeskip battle model as a Cavalier and Paladin.
    • Otherwise, he uses black colors for his classes.
    • Additionally, Sylvain's post-timeskip design is a unique take on that of Paladins.
  • Sylvain has the third-smallest pool of A supports in the game, with only four discounting Byleth. He only surpasses Gilbert (with two) and Jeritza (with three); both of whom are route-exclusives.
  • Excluding Byleth, Sylvain has the highest number of support chains with 17 total.
    • With the Wave 4 released, Sylvain has tied with Lysithea and Bernadetta.
  • Sylvain is one of the characters who may receive a Hero's Relic during the main story as a playable character, but in his case it is optional. The others are Byleth, Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude.
  • His English C-Support with Ingrid differs from the original Japanese, in the former he flirts with a "scarecrow" while in the latter he hits on a "man dressed as a woman."
  • Sylvain and Manuela's B-Support is the first Support Conversation ever where the characters don't interact with each other at all.
  • Sylvain is one of the three male characters in the franchise to be able to learn Seraphim. The others are Saber and Balthus.
  • Ferdinand, Felix, Sylvain, Mercedes, Ingrid, Lorenz, Alois, and Shamir are the only characters that must be killed in certain paths if not recruited.
    • In Sylvain's case, he must be killed during Field of Revenge if not recruited in Crimson Flower, along with Mercedes.
  • Sylvain is one of the few characters to have a canonical Master Class when encountered as an enemy, that being the Great Knight. He shares this distinction with Caspar, Ingrid, Lysithea, Seteth and Cyril.
    • Unlike said others, Sylvain lacks a subject strength that is necessary to pass the Great Knight Certification Exam, that being Heavy Armor.
  • In a survey conducted by Nintendo DREAM Magazine, Sylvain placed 10th with 9.1% of the vote overall and ranked 9th with 11.5% among those who completed the game in the character popularity poll for Three Houses. The male-female vote ratio was 1:2.
  • In the second survey conducted by Nintendo DREAM Magazine, Sylvain placed 5th in the character popularity poll for Three Houses. The male-female vote ratio was 1:3. He ranked 5th among those who completed the game with 191 points.
  • In a survey conducted by Famitsu Magazine, Sylvain placed 4th for males and 8th overall with 913 votes in the character popularity poll for Three Houses.
  • In the third survey conducted by Nintendo DREAM Magazine, Sylvain placed 5th in the character popularity poll for Three Houses. The male-female vote ratio was 1:3. He ranked 5th among those who completed the game with 172 points.
  • In the fourth survey conducted by Nintendo DREAM Magazine, Sylvain placed 5th in the character popularity poll for Three Houses. The male-female vote ratio was 1:4. He ranked 5th among those who completed the game with 110 points.
  • In the fifth survey conducted by Nintendo DREAM Magazine, Sylvain placed 6th in the character popularity poll for Three Houses. The male-female vote ratio was 1:4. He ranked 6th among those who completed the game with 16.7% of the vote.
  • In the fourth Fire Emblem Heroes: Choose Your Legends popularity poll, Sylvain ranked 10th place for males with 9,132 votes.
  • It is possible that he and Ingrid form the "red and green duo," based on the fact that they are both mounted units of some kind (when encountered as enemy units) and the fact that Ingrid's post-timeskip outfit is a light shade of green. However, it has not been confirmed if this was the intention.
