What Frankenstein was doing before the story started: off screen action or quick flashback
Frankenstein had been living out his days in an idyllic manner that seemed at odds with his past atrocities against nature. He had a little cottage in the Swiss Alps where he made a peaceful life with the Creature, needing nothing and no one else in the world … until one day he fell gravely ill.
Stubborn creature that he was, Frankenstein refused to admit to himself that he was sick, gradually wearing himself more and more thin. One day, the Creature discovered him collapsed in the snow and frantically ran to find him medical help. After a few unpleasant encounters (the kind that tend to happen when the Creature walks around in broad daylight) he manages to deposit Frankenstein at a tiny village hospital to receive care.
But as soon as he even regains consciousness, Frankenstein’s stubbornness rears its head. He stumbles out of the hospital, falls sick again, gets put into another hospital, escapes again … until the deadly combination of the ever-worsening sickness and his incurable pig-headedness make him unfit for any ordinary doctor’s care. It is only then that the Creature resolves to find Dr. Jekyll, who had managed to help Dr. Frankenstein once before.
