A car dealership could be knocked down to make way for a new Sainsbury's.
Plans, submitted to Adur and Worthing Councils, proposes the demolition of the existing SsangYong car dealership, Clarion Cars, at 84 South Street, in Worthing.
The site, currently made up of several connected buildings and a car display area, would be replaced by a Sainsbury’s Local convenience store.
The proposed store will cover an area of 407 square metres and will feature a customer car park at the front, which will also have cycle parking facilities.
The existing car dealership (Image: Google) According to the planning documents, the store would sell a range of convenience items, including fresh fruit and vegetables, meats, dairy products, bakery items, alcohol, sandwiches, lunch items, and general grocery goods.
It would also offer a limited range of non-food items such as kitchen essentials and household cleaning products.
The planning documents said: "Such stores are commonplace across the country and serve mainly to provide top-up shopping, reducing the need for customers to travel further to purchase essential everyday items.
"The store will provide a much-needed convenience shopping destination within the Tarring area."

These stores are described as a "food-led extension of Sainsbury’s renowned convenience offer."

"The store will not be large enough to cater for the main food shopping needs of most customers and neither will it attract customers from beyond a localised catchment area due to the limited ranges a store of this size can accommodate.

"However, it will provide choice and competition for top-up, convenience shopping in Tarring."
The proposed development also includes eight parking spaces, which the applicant considers "essential to the successful operation of the store".
