American chess player Hans Niemann has withdrawn from the upcoming  Paris leg of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2025 just hours after being notified about the implementation of new anti-cheating measures, according to a report. Niemann had recently shared a post on social media informing his followers that he would soon be coming to Paris.

However, the organisers on Saturday announced that Niemann has withdrawn from the tournament at the last minute and Nodirbek Abdusattorov will replace him at the event. Meanwhile, Norwegian outlet TV 2 has reported that Neimann pulled out at the last minute as soon as he learnt about the new security measures.

Niemann exits Paris Freestyle Chess leg hours before arrival

The event’s management confirmed to TV 2 that Niemann pulled out shortly before his scheduled arrival at the tournament hotel. His exit comes in the wake of an announcement by the organisers and billionaire Jan Henric Buettner, who revealed the installation of advanced security equipment aimed at detecting cheating.

The report claims to have seen message exchanges that indicate Niemann’s decision came immediately after being informed of the upgraded security setup. Niemann’s official explanation for his withdrawal was cited as “personal reasons.”

Buettner, the founder of Freestyle Chess, which is co-owned by Niemann’s bitter rival Magnus Carlsen, expressed disappointment over the American’s sudden withdrawal from the Partis leg of the competition.

“We are obviously incredibly disappointed to hear about Niemann’s withdrawal from this event. But we are very happy to have found an incredible replacement with Nodirbek Abdusattorov on very short notice,” Buettner said in a statement to Chess.com.

Niemann’s late withdrawal raised eyebrows among chess insiders, particularly because of the timing. He had been added to the tournament after being left out of the opening round, and was expected to compete against elite opposition, including Carlsen, who had previously accused him of cheating.

Niemann later admitted to cheating in online games but denied all allegations that Carlsen made and went on to file a $100 million defamation lawsuit. The legal battle stemmed from Carlsen’s public allegations that Niemann had cheated during the Sinquefield Cup in 2022. The case was eventually settled out of court in 2023.

The controversy resurfaced recently when Carlsen revisited the topic during his appearance on a podcast. The former world champion reflected on the scandal, reigniting reactions. Niemann, in response, hit back strongly, “I’d rather retire than stoop to malicious accusations and character assassination. My commitment to chess is eternal, the chess will speak in due time.”

There will be no Magnus Carlsen vs Hans Niemann match at the upcoming Paris leg of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2025. Niemann has pulled out of the event with only a few days to go for the chess tournament.

The news of Niemann pulling out of the Paris leg of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour was shared by the organisers on Saturday with the tournament set to start on Monday (7 April).

Abdusattorov replaces Niemann for Freestyle Tour Paris leg

Uzbekistan Grandmaster Nodirbek Abdusattorov has been included in the tournament as a replacement for Niemann. "Hans Niemann has withdrawn last minute and Nodirbek Abdusattorov will replace him," Freestyle Chess Tour organisers said on Instagram.

The exact reasons behind Niemann's withdrawal have not been shared by the organisers.

Niemann keeps silence on withdrawal from Freestyle Tour

Niemann has not released any statement or clarification from his end. On Tuesday he had posted a Ghibli-styled animated picture of him playing chess with former world champion Vladimir Kramnik on his X account with the caption" "Coming soon to Paris."

Earlier, talking about the opportunity to play in Freestyle Tour, Niemann had said; “I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to compete in the Freestyle Paris edition… No matter what opportunities come my way, I will continue to let my chess speak for itself. Thank you to everyone who has supported me on this journey.”

Niemann’s withdrawal has robbed chess fans of a chance to see him once again take on world No.1 Carlsen who had accused the American Grandmaster of cheating in 2022. The cheating accusation led to a $100 million lawsuit, which was eventually settled out of court.

The controversy was rekindled recently after Carlsen spoke about it on Joe Rogan's podcast and Niemann hit back at him by accusing him of trying to destroy the life of a teenager.

World No.1 chess player Magnus Carlsen is currently engaged in a thrilling match against 100,000 players at the same time. How? The 100,000 participants are competing against the 34-year-old Norwegian in the Magnus vs The World match which got underway on Thursday on Chess.com.

The Magnus vs The World match has already broken the record for the largest online chess match ever. However, it is not the first time a chess Grandmaster is playing against the whole world. Earlier, former champions Garry Kasparov and Viswanathan Anand have also taken part in similar matches.

The Kasparov vs The World match on the MSN Gaming Zone in 1999 saw the Russian chess legend compete against 50,000 players. Indian chess great Anand, who won the world title five times, competed against 70,000 players on the 25th anniversary of Kasparov’s game. Both GMs won their respective matches.

How Magnus vs The World match is unique

A few things are different about the Magnus vs The World match though. While Kasparov and Anand competed in traditional Classical matches, Carlsen is playing against the world in a Freestyle Chess (Chess960) match. In Freestyle Chess, the back positions of the pieces on a chess board are randomised.

Also, don't expect a quick result to the match as it's a chess match that will require voting. So while Carlsen is playing with White pieces, the Chess.com community will be together playing as Black. Every move of theirs will be decided by voting. Each team will have 24 hours to make a move.

Magnus vs The World breaks internet record

The Magnus vs The World match officially got underway on Thursday with Carlsen playing 1.e4.

The World Team is also receiving coaching from some of the top chess players including WGM Dina Belenkaya, NM Dane Mattson, IM David Martinez, IM David Pruess and GM Benjamin Bok.

"It's incredible to see 100,000 chess players have the opportunity to compete against the greatest chess player of all time—passionately debating moves and ideas, strategizing, and trying to guess what Magnus will play next," Sam Copeland, Chess.com's Head of Community, said.

"We are also excited to see this battle take place in Freestyle Chess, a format which allows for the greatest freedom and creativity for the players and a format for which Magnus has long advocated. This is a great moment and milestone for the chess world, and we look forward to a fun and exciting game."

For those who may still be interested in competition against Carlsen, the registration for the match is now closed.

Magnus Carlsen did not mince words when he said that chess world champion D Gukesh could "struggle" in the upcoming Paris leg of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2025. Gukesh, 18, is the youngest world chess champion, but his victory came in the classical format.

The Chennai Grandmaster is still to make a name for himself in the freestyle chess which is also known as Fischer Random chess or the faster version of the sport like rapid and blitz events. In the first leg of the inaugural Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour, Gukesh finished eighth in the standings after failing to win a single game.

He also lost his match against Freestyle Chess co-founder Carlsen, which was the first meeting between the new world champions and chess world No.1 since the World Championship in December 2024.

Carlsen feels Gukesh won't make it to knockouts

The Paris leg of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2025 kicks off on 7 April with 12 Grandmasters including Arjun Erigaisi, R Praggnanandhaa and Vidit Gujrathi from India. Weissenhaus leg winner Vincent Keymer, Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiana Caruana, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Alireza Firouzja, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Hans Niemann will also be part of the tournament.

While discussing the upcoming event with Caruana during a Twitch stream on Thursday, Carlsen picked Gukesh among the four names that may fail to qualify for the knockouts in Paris.

After a two-day round-robin phase, only eight GMs will qualify for the knockouts.

"Everyone's at risk, of course. But Gukesh, Niemann, Vincent, Maxime... Vidit on paper is going to struggle a bit," Carlsen was quoted as saying by onmanorama.com.

Carlsen explains why Keymer may not win Freestyle Chess Paris leg

Caruana and Carlsen though gave some benefit of the doubt to Gujrathi, who got married earlier this week. "But he is on his honeymoon. What is the data on playing on honeymoon?" asked Caruana.

To this, Carlsen replied: "I haven't tried yet. I think he (Vidit) should be alright. He is very happy, in a good spirit."

Explaining why he feels Keymer may make an early exit in Paris despite winning the first leg, Carlsen said: "If you look at the field, look at Vincent; he won the last tournament, but there is a chance that he could be out. Maybe we're underestimating him. But getting through this field, not being bottom four here in rapid is tough."

World No.3 Gukesh will be looking to prove Carlsen and his critics wrong in Paris as he aims to improve his game in all formats. Besides Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi and R Praggnanandhaa have immense potential to upset the apple cart in Paris.
