RUMOR: Physical Switch 2 Edition games contain a Switch 1 game card and upgrade pack download code
Something old, something new
While it was rumored thanks to some fine print on Nintendo’s website, the Big N officially confirmed the existing of “Switch 2 Edition” games during the latest Nintendo Direct. For those who don’t know, Switch 2 Edition games are Switch 1 titles that are seeing release on Switch 2. This includes titles like Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, and Metroid Prime 4 Beyond.
If you already own any of those games (minus MP4B, obviously) for the Switch 1, you can simply purchase the upgrade pack digitally to get the new content and enhancements available exclusively to Switch 2 owners. Anyone who doesn’t have a Switch or one of these games in particular will be able to buy a complete “Switch 2 Edition” digitally or physically.
For those going the physical route, one question has been popping up. When you buy that physical game box, what exactly is inside? Do physical Switch 2 Edition games include everything on a game card, or is there another setup? We might have some insight on this, thanks to a Nintendo UK support rep.
According to a Nintendo UK support rep, anyone who buys a physical Switch 2 Edition game can expect to find a Switch 1 game card inside the box alongside a digital code for the upgrade pack. In other words, you’ll have to make sure you’ve got room on your Switch 2 in order to download the enhanced versions of these Switch 1 games.
Many were hoping that Nintendo would put everything on a game card, upgrade pack and all, but if what this UK support rep says is true, that won’t be the case. That said, don’t take these comments as gospel. There have been many times in the past where Nintendo support reps/customer service have been misinformed and got things wrong, and that could be the case here.
We’ve reached out to our rep to try and get clarification on the matter, and hopefully we’ll have a response soon.

1d agoI'm pretty sure it says this on their website. I assume this is so you can use the card on your Switch 1. It would probably be cool if they could make the upgrade a Virtual Game Card that's tied to the S1 cartridge.

23h agoSwitch 2 is really souring my "physical collection" tendencies. I'm not liking what I'm hearing.

23h agoNot sure why people thought otherwise.

20h agoFor anyone interested that didn't click the source, it's from a Twitter account that asked customer support via chat while also cutting off the rest of the conversation. All we see is :
Thank you for your reply.
Yes, we can confirm that the upgrades will be download codes.
Thank you for your understanding.
If you have any further questions please let us know. In the meantime, we wish you a great day.
Kind regards,

Ive worked as and with enough customer support to know this is just the single script line they know about the upgrades, and that it is not helpful at all. Customer support knows the least at any company, possibly even less than we know ourselves currently. To me, it reads as a generic "yes upgrades for Switch games will exist as codes" something we already know of, and not "I am confirming that the Switch 2 Versions is a Switch version game in box alongside a code". I am more than content waiting for a real answer, because this isn't it.
On the other hand though, CDPR already confirmed that are shipping Cyberpunk with the DLC expansion on a 64GB with no download needed at $69.99USD, which I think is great news for the future since a lot of games could ship just fine all on the cart.
It's part of why I just can't believe this at the moment since there is no reason to do this, especially since the other two first party games we have retail info for we know are all on the cart like normal.

17h ago... Y'know, I'm actually okay with this. While it'd have been nice to get "dual mode" cartridges like back with the Game Boy and Game Boy Color, I understand that the much larger sizes of games nowadays would make that a less feasible option. On the other hand, this allows you buy a Switch 2 Edition game physically and still let you play it on Switch 1. It'd have been nice if any game with a Switch 2 Edition just automatically upgraded with no charge when you put it into a Switch 2 like with Xbox Smart Delivery, but in several cases, Nintendo is adding much more content than just a technical boost for the new console, so I'm a bit in-between on it.

8h agoThat would mean we would not be able to have the benfit of faster loading times on Switch 2, right? Because it's loading from these slower cards.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
Man, this communication is a mess. Bravo, Nintendo
This wouldn't make much sense though since Nintendo already posted comparisson videos:

I really don't know what to think anymore and I fear we have to wait until launch and until someone who actually buys the game will provide us with all the info we need.
