The exhaust gas neutralizer plays an important role in the operation of the car. A faulty purifier leads to increased fuel consumption, reduced engine power and problems during technical inspection. The car becomes “sluggish”, accelerates worse, this is especially noticeable when driving uphill or overtaking. The appearance of a characteristic smell of “rotten eggs” (hydrogen sulfide) from the exhaust pipe indicates chemical degradation of the catalytic layer and the inability of the neutralizing element to fully clean emissions.
These signs can appear both individually and in combination. If at least two of them are detected, it is recommended to conduct a more thorough diagnosis.
Simple idle test
Another way to check does not require special skills. Start a cold engine and listen. If you hear a ringing rattling sound from the exhaust system, this may indicate the destruction of the internal structure of the neutralizer.
After warming up, the device should work almost silently. Any extraneous sounds, especially those that increase when you press the gas pedal, are a signal to check at the service.
This method is especially effective for detecting mechanical damage to the internal elements of the spare part. Constant shaking or knocking indicate serious problems.
