Personality[]
Immediately, most who meet Hubert notes of his menacing gaze and his rather sinister way of talking. He makes no illusions of where his allegiances lie and frequently makes unsettling comments clearly painted by intimidating verbiage. He is consummately villainous at times, even Edelgard finds that word to be most fitting for him, and seems to relish whenever ones notes this to him. He keeps his social circle to an extremely tight degree, so much so that he notably has no supports with any student outside of the Black Eagles in Three Houses. However, his grave demeanor and ominous eloquence belie his intentions.
Hubert has been a stalwart servant to Edelgard since childhood and maintains undying loyalty to her. He takes House Vestra's vassalage to House Hresvelg with immense pride, and acts based on his interpretation on who will benefit Edelgard and the Empire at heart. Hubert's willingness to carry out gruesome orders and use underhanded methods puts him at odds with Ferdinand: where Hubert will quietly subvert orders he disagrees with, Ferdinand believes a good advisor is one who openly confronts and challenges others to be better. Despite this, the two respect each other for their respective roles to serve Edelgard. While he ultimately respects Edelgard decisions, he still works behind the scenes for her tirelessly, providing both a shrewd consultant and taking means to see her vision of the future come to fruition. As a result, he does consider many notable individuals as a potential threat to her, keeping them in check for her through his discerning eye such as Shamir. He is immediately distrusting of Byleth and in their first support, states he would not hesitate to kill if they were deemed a threat to her. At times, he even commits actions against her wishes if he believes it will ultimately benefit her, yet he takes responsibility for situations by his hand that impacts her in these instances.
Due to his pride in House Vestra's duty to serve House Hresvelg, Hubert greatly loathes his father, as shown in his supports with Hanneman. He greatly dislikes talking about him, calling him a traitor to House Vestra, staining their 1,100 years of loyalty to House Hresvelg. Marquis Vestra was also the reason why Edelgard was sent to Faerghus in her youth. Upon Edelgard's purging of corrupt nobles, which included Hubert's father, he showed no remorse in his death, stating that it was well deserved. Even when Hanneman points out that he was trying to protect him by obtaining more power, Hubert refuses to budge on his hatred of him. In contrast, Hubert admits to Lysithea in Three Hopes that he has a mother and siblings whose existence he keeps a close secret for their safety, to the extent that not even Edelgard knows about them.
While seen by most as heartless and cold-blooded, Edelgard has vouched for his honor, which is exemplified in his contempt for Those Who Slither in the Dark. He believes that the atrocities they commit lack any justifiable motives, and he makes it clear in Crimson Flower that they only work together out of necessity. When questioned by Byleth if he hates the goddess, Hubert states that while he would choose "hate" over "love" when describing his perception of the goddesss, he ultimately believes that she abandoned the people of Fódlan and thus it is left to humanity to correct this. He believes that Edelgard exemplifies humanity taking the power given to them to reshape the world for the better.
Hubert also attempts to get along with fellow members of his house, but expresses his support of them in strange ways, such as subjecting Bernadetta to his hardest, most terrifying laugh in an effort to help her overcome her fear of him. He views his classmates as valuable assets to the Empire and is sharply critical of them to foster improvement.

Recruitment[]
Hubert will automatically be recruited if Byleth chooses to teach the Black Eagles house in chapter 1. If Byleth chose to teach any other house, Hubert cannot be recruited whatsoever.
During chapter 11, if the player decides to side with Edelgard, Hubert will remain a playable unit as normal. However, if the player instead sides with the Church of Seiros, Hubert will permanently leave the party and will only be encountered as an enemy. Any items that Hubert is carrying beforehand will also be lost, so it will be best to return the items into the convoy before attempting this chapter.

Hubert is the resident magic attacker of the Black Eagles house, possessing very high growths in Magic, Dexterity, Speed, and Resistance. He will shrug off magical attacks and obliterate most enemies he engages, but will buckle to one or two physical hits. Hubert is one of only four units who can learn Dark magic, setting him aside from Dorothea and most mages from other houses. Even among Dark users, his spell list is robust, with unique access to the incredibly useful spell Mire B and being the only unit outside of the DLC-exclusive Hapi to learn the equally useful Banshee Θ. These spells give him extended range and bonus effects to help tackle the toughest enemies. Hubert's personal skill, Officer Duty, makes his Gambits hit just as incredibly hard as his Dark magic does. The only mages who hit harder than Hubert are Lysithea and Constance, but Hubert is a bit sturdier than either of them.
Given his skill levels, Hubert will have easy access to the Soldier set (Soldier), the Fighter set (Fighter, Archer, Sniper), and the Monk set (Monk, Mage, Dark Mage, Warlock, Dark Bishop, Dark Knight). His skill strengths makes him well suited for the Monk path. His budding talent in Lances will help him promote to Dark Knight, although this will require extensive horsemanship training in the monastery. Like many other mages, Hubert is particularly fragile and needs to be well-protected from enemy physical units. Unlike most other mages, Hubert has a weakness in Faith and a pitiful White magic pool, so he is almost strictly relegated to combat magic, though that is what he does best. It is better to leave healing to the far more capable Linhardt and Dorothea. While Hubert also has an affinity for Bows, his below-par Strength means he won't be able to use them effectively, though it may be worthwhile to briefly class him as an Archer just to get Hit +20, as his low-Hit Dark spells can occasionally have accuracy issues, and perhaps worthwhile to get Sniper for the minimum 17 Strength. Hubert's proficiency in Bows also makes him a strong user of the Magic Bow; as a male magic user, Hubert does not have access to a class that doubles Dark Magic uses, so the Magic Bow makes an excellent backup weapon for him.
If, for some reason, Hubert's damage fails to impress, one could master Wyvern Rider (if one can get through his weaknesses in Axes and Flying) and Dark Knight to acquire Seal Defense and Seal Resistance respectively, and use them with his debuff-centric Dark spells to cripple an enemy. Hapi is arguably better at this than Hubert, but it is still a build worth considering. This will normally require New Game+ or unlimited auxiliary battles via Normal difficulty, however, due to his banes in Axes and Flying making it hard for him to get Wyvern Rider.
Overall, Hubert makes for a potent mage for either dealing damage or inflicting debuffs on the enemy. His unique niche as the only truly good Dark Bishop also has merit, but he should generally do well in any magical classes available to him.

|
Base Set[]
Hubert is a Red Infantry Mage who is decently strong with a respectable 39 neutral Atk and a passable 32 Spd. His only downside is his low overall bulk. While his magical sits on a workable 25 Res, his Def is pitifully low at 19. While he can prove useful, he is largely overshadowed by much more potent Red Mages such as Lysithea or Tharja. He can still serve as a strong second string mage if needed, but he does need a personal tome to give him a particular niche that puts him on par with two mentioned above.
Rauðrfox does help make him stronger and bulkier than he seems as he inflicts -4 to his opponent's four core stats when he initiates combat. This does turn him into a strong player turn character and this effect combos nicely on Blow related skills or flat stat increases.
Growing Thunder inflicts damage in an area around his target factoring solely the difference between his Atk and the enemies Res and can deal decent chip damage as a result. Chill Resistance inflicts -7 to the Res of the enemy with the highest amount, helping him to damage particularly magically bulky enemies. Infantry Hexblade is a unique Skill C which assists physical allies by allowing their damage to be calculated between their Atk and the enemies lowest defensive stat, meaning adaptive damage. The skill is gimmicky, but it can help them with enemies by turning them into pseudo-dragons.
Counters[]
As mentioned above, Hubert's bulk is low and most physical units, even some Greens, can take him out in a single blow. Blues carrying Distant Counter like Fjorm, Brave Hector, and Fallen Hardin can easily take a hit and retaliate through color advantage. Blue Mages also easily dispatch him, even middling tier mages like Tailtiu.
Skill Inheritance[]
Regardless of his tome, Hubert should run Draw Back or Reposition for an ally positioning assist skill. Glimmer is his best Special since as a mage, he thrives when buffed, especially with a standard blade set. Skill A is also fairly standard regardless of sets as Fury, Life and Death, or Swift Sparrow helps him tremendously, the latter is strong for maximum Blade tome damage or comboing on the Fox tome. Skill C can be filled with a host of skills like Hones, Smoke, and Wave skills, though the latter, especially either Odd/Even Attack Wave work best.
If running with a typical Blade tome set, he needs Rauðrblade and Desperation while his Fox set keeps his tome and his skill B the same.

| Crimson Schemer Hubert | |||

|
Hubert, a member of the Black Eagle House at the Officers Academy, has come from the continent of Fódlan to join us for the Day of Devotion!
|
Here's his outfit: black formal wear, with embellishments in gold thread. I love his hat with the golden feather as decoration!
|
He's also carrying a bottle on a sumptuously decorated serving tray—which, in addition to serving drinks, can also be used as a weapon to serve his foes a magical comeuppance!
|
Despite it being the Day of Devotion, Hubert's stoic expression may seem like it was hewn from stone—but he's a little more tender on the inside. He says he's deeply grateful to have had the privilege of meeting Edelgard, his liege!
| Closely Associated Characters | |||
| Edelgard | Princess and heir apparent of the Adrestian Empire. Her steadfast ambition is veiled by her elegant, self-confident demeanor. Hubert has sworn his loyalty to her. | ||

Recruitment (Warriors)[]
Hubert will automatically be recruited if Shez chooses to join the Black Eagles house in chapter 2, thus starting Scarlet Blaze. If Shez chose to join any other house, Hubert cannot be recruited whatsoever.
Hubert will only be playable during Azure Gleam or Golden Wildfire through the Record Keeper during a New Game+ file, as long as that file has completed Scarlet Blaze data.

Hubert is a Germanic name, meaning "bright heart."
Vestra is Latin for "yours", a possible reference to his devotion to Edelgard, as well as the historical devotion of his family to her's.
Trivia[]

- However, he won't be playable, and it is said in the ending screen that he dies from his wounds soon after the war.
- Hubert is one of the two characters to canonically use two different Intermediate classes (Mage in Chapter 7 and Dark Mage in Chapter 12), the other being Acheron.
- Hubert is one of the only characters whose birthdays cannot be celebrated during the Academy phase, as his 20th birthday takes place before the events of the game.
