Phoebe Lunny, the guitarist and vocalist from Lambrini Girls, wants to point out a hypocrisy. “The far right, their whole thing is, ‘What about free speech?’ But when we criticise the UK then it’s a problem. Where does the buck lie?”

The punk duo championed by Iggy Pop are talking animatedly about this over pints and lemonade at one of their favourite pubs in Lunny’s native Brighton: the lovely, colourful Prince Albert. They made headlines recently after commentators in several newspapers complained about the fact they’d received government funding to support their touring, specifically pointing to comments made in DIY magazine in February 2024. “I think it’s embarrassing to be from England,” Lunny had said. “We’re extremely racist; we’re extremely xenophobic; our government are fascists.
