At the end I asked the anon what they thought his negative traits were and I got a lovely response from them via submission, but Tumblr apparently adds the person's name and email to submissions when sent not logged in, so I'm posting it and responding this way to keep their info private. For clarity's sake, what they said is in black bold and my responses are in purple.

Generally, I agree a lot with what you said, but I will try to add something you haven’t written about (however, sometimes it is kind of similar to what you’ve said):
-obsessive – I see him as a person who faced with something that catches his attention won’t stop until he has a thorough knowledge about the subject. Be it a cold case or a rare species of Peruvian llamas, he wants to know everything about it. I can picture him in the libraries, going through archives, watching lots of videos on the topics, sending Watari or other people to interview those who might share interesting details about things that he’s currently obsessed with. In the most negative scenario , I can see him as a stalker, if he’s obsessed with someone. It is not about controlling or threatening that person, but investigating them with the same fascination scientists investigate a recently discovered species.
I Completely agree. This goes with the whole "addictive personality" thing that I mentioned.
- blunt – in my opinion, L tends to be blunt or even hurtful. It is not to be confused with rudeness or arrogance, it is just he’s not concerned with other people’s feelings so much, and also he doesn’t spend much thought on how he’s perceived by the others. Interaction with other people is just a means of achieving his goal, so he doesn’t waste time beating around the bush or caring about pleasantries. That being said, I firmly believe that if a person he cares about told him he’s hurt them, he would apologize and be more careful with words next time.
Personally, I think his bluntness is something that happens more when he's stressed out or highly focused. I do agree that he rarely cares how others perceive him, maybe caring slightly more when it's someone he really cares about. I like to write him with a weird hybrid of politeness out of formality while getting directly to the point. I agree He isn't interested in wasting time. When it comes to someone he cares about, I think he totally apologizes once he realizes he hurt them and will have every intention to not do it again, and usually he's successful doing this.
- underdeveloped emotionally – while I notice some fans tend to describe L as some kind of an emo genius, with a rich emotional life, I believe that he has problems with recognizing and expressing his own feelings and emotions. I think that as a result he may be seen by others as oblivious or even cold. To me, he’s that kind of a guy who instead of saying ‘I love you’ would wash your car or find a solution to a problem that bothered you. Also, I picture him as a person that doesn’t read between the lines and needs clear communication in emotional relationships with others.
This one, to me, is an difficult one. I personally think he's very capable of recognizing and expressing his emotions unless it's something he has little to no experience with. I like to write him having a hard time recognizing or believing that someone can care about him, etc. but I think he is quite empathetic when he stops to actually evaluate the situation.
- this one is not so much a negative trait but rather a weakness: in my opinion he feels a lot of pressure and is not fully aware of it, so it manifests in anxiety, quirks and self-doubt. So many people in his surrounding see him as a omniscient genius, a prodigy, and I think it must be a huge burden that he doesn’t even realize he’s carrying, especially when you take into account what I think about his shortcomings in emotional department.
YES! I completely think he has self-doubt and feelings of failure. I disagree with a lot of HCs that characterize him as arrogant and "never wrong". I believe he feels the pressure of being L, especially when he comes up against something that he can't easily solve.

[Random Babbling] To match L's "slightly evil", so does OCs Often times when reading self-inserts I could feel somehow the L was a bit too perfect. The perfect introvert lover. In self-inserts fics, it's good, I think, which matches people's tastes.
When writing my own OC and reading other people's OC, the thing that I really wanted to see is the author acknowledging L's flaws. Not the ones that "they're flaws, but they're cute"- no, I mean, real flaws, the flaws that would make you "Hmm. That's...not okay. That is not a person that I would love personally."
I often think that if L is a person in real life, he is definitely not the guy that girls would find attractive or anyone would want to come close to. judging from the first impression, there is no incentive for a normal person to get close to him. Unless you are an extrovert and you could befriend anyone in your classroom, including that weird guy who never wears shoes and chews on his thumb like a baby, sits in the corner of the classroom, and always litters candy wraps. ALL THE TIME .
Acknowledge that L is weird and quirky. Acknowledge that an OC to love such a person is no normal person. Aside from Mary Sue, write an OC with some sort of flaw that matches L's flaws, and then it comes together that they should be together because it's reasonable for a person not that normal to be with L. Give the OC a slightly evil trait. It does not have to be huge, but enough for you to feel, "Okay now that's not really okay, but it...it makes sense"
View L realistically. It's like knowing him in person and a friend of mine when I write him. One of my friends in real life is compassionate, gentle, and caring, but I also admit that she nags, she is depressed, she overanalyze things, and maybe a bit too into politics. It doesn't stop me from liking her and being her friend. I know her flaws realistically, and she may not do a good job in some positions unless a drastic change in life shapes her personality.
As for L, he is a great detective, perhaps a nice lover, but you have to admit that he would choose work before his lover but still maintain to protect him/her. He definitely is not a husband that would cook for you or help you with housework, unless you teach him hand in hand. More often times, he knows how, but he is just not interested. He won't budge. And that drives people crazy. As a father? No, BIG no, the child would hardly see him around and only know that daddy is busy all the time, and therefore he would be closer to mom, and L wouldn't really care if his child is close with him or not.
Or maybe it's me making L more neglectful and more realistically ugly and giving him a reasonable plot to change, learn, develop, slowly become human, and grow.
The way L has the god status Light dreams of and Light is the normal life L has never experienced.
Just like. imagine you're a guy. You don't have parents, no one knows your name or what you look like, only that you're this miraculous, mysterious force who anonymously solves unsolvable mysteries. You've never been to school or had really any human experiences, and that's how the public regards you: not human.
And then there's the perfect golden boy who goes to public school and helps his sister with her homework and eats dinner with his parents. He's so normal but he wants to be more. And when he talks to you, when he realizes he's on your level , you: this unknown god-like figure, then that must mean he's also a god, right? But the fact that you have someone who thinks as fast as you, someone who you can even relate to, and for the first time, you feel human.

Another new thought to my fic. Inspired by this meta on Reddit. (HIGHLY recommend this. Read this first)
Combine the Reddit meta with my own interpretation of L in my fic; having learned to love, he now understands deeply that this could become his weakness, his vulnerability.
He will no longer be the person who relies solely on logic and calculation, who resorts to any means necessary, who would even resort to cheating. He acknowledges that these traits are essential to being a good detective. However, he has come to the realization that he cannot embody them anymore. The person L.Lawliet, no longer embodies the traits of a good detective.
He seeks to find someone who will remain unaffected by love, whether due to incapacity or immunity. From this perspective, L's evolution (in stories where he learns to love) can be justified- his capacity to love and his willingness to seek a better successor. In this sense, he would not let Watari choose the successors anymore, as an ideal successor is not a child like him, but a child entirely different from him . Therefore, he had to select his own new successors, instead of letting Watari handle the matter.
He must tell the children that he is such a person(evil, cheating, lying monster) so that those who would feel disappointed could be filtered out. Only those who feel "L should be like this" can live up to the name of "L".
A is dead. B is dead. It is not because they are a failure. It is because they are too similar to L.
I think combining that analysis of L and my own interpretation of L, and the adjustments I made, the gentleness of L would be much more obvious in my story. And to contrast Light Yagami much more. L sees all kinds of pain and suffering, yet he still has that softness for the world and people. He doesn't care how others view him- the listless, quirky young man, but he continues to stands for his beliefs. There is a sense of "I am secured inside, and therefore, I could continue what I am doing, regardless of how people see me."
On the other hand, Light Yagami sees the partial world but has quite an aggressive and extreme state of mind, hidden under his perfect mask.
Love is not a savior for problems. Instead, it is precious and delicate, something that needs to be protected and defended. Love is strong, strengthening one's mind and making a person secure.
Yet love is a weakness in detective work.

It has been some time now since I promoted my fic on Tumblr (because I am not very used to the user interface of Tumblr, and I am still learning how reblogging and comments work. They are definitely different from Meta's 'Share', right???)
[Babbling] In later chapters, I quite let go of writing long notes in AN; it didn't feel the same when I started the story. Ah! The passion for the story- don't get me wrong, I still do love my plot and story- but the urge to share my headcanon in AN gradually faded away as interactions seemed not very active. Nevermind. So don't do it on AO3 when you have some sort of expectation, turn to TUMBLR where I have no expectation of anyone really commenting my post, YAY! (As for reddit because too much people will read it, unless I really want to get it out...most of the time I feel shy.) Tumblr felt a lot like English plurk to me- ah yes Plurk does have english but you know...my Plurk is in Mandarin Chinese and people on Taiwanese Plurk are liberals, left wing, and plenty of cosplayers and fans of fandoms.
[Some more random babbling on FSOTM] I like some sort of transformation shown in stories. How one person changed. How they started from being a normal person to madness. I never really believed in "he is who he is and has never changed." We change constantly. I like the movie Joker; you see the process of him getting pushed into the abyss, you see how he fell, how he was despairing again and again, how he struggled, and then became Joker. Very realistic. When watching I know that he will not be saved. But there was always hoping someone to walk into his miserable life and light up the darkness. Maybe I like the feeling of having hope and then seeing it vanish (in literature.) There was another movie with a similar plot, but the character was a teen. There were numerous times I was screaming inside "Someone save him! Pull him away from the darkness! Save his soul!" But no one came. Ah. So despair. Ah. Watch it again
Back to FSOTM. My beta asked me whether it was some sort of compensation to write Mello as..well, a seven-year-old boy acting as a little boy. Maybe? Isn't he adorable (smile) but I do know that Near and Mello each had L's personalities- Near the calm, reserved, rational one. Mello the angry little thunderstorm bold, quick thinker, willing to act one. I also think that Mello also has L's childishness in him. Everyone started pure and innocent. Some changed early. Some changed in a good way (education, influenced by others) while some fell.
As for L in this current chapter, I've always considered it hard for L to learn how to love someone else. It has to be slow...and it never starts out as him intentionally learning how to love. It is just reasonable things he thinks he could do under the relationship he and this person shared. And then one by one, gradually building up... It goes slow, like a toddler learning how to walk, and it must be a struggle and very strange to him, with plenty of wobbling and stumbling, but eventually, he learns how to walk.
“What’s wrong with sitting under a flower tree?”
“I thought you didn’t appreciate flowers.”
“I could learn to appreciate them. You and Watari both like flowers.” If you like it, then I will learn to like the things that you like.
This is starting to give me Steven Universe vibes. Recommend this song "Love Like You"

More so towards the violence and less so towards a friendly welcome, I don’t know a single soul or situation that knows of where a bunch of possibly older and bigger boys looked at a “newbie” and decided their first action is to cuddle /with/ them. From witnessing alone, I can attest to the fact that they were more than likely trying to hurt him. His associating touch with violence, however, is a more than definite and good assumption to have. But the fact that his history with his parents is predominantly left out, in an essence, leaving us only to wonder what has happened and left with only these few pieces is saddening to think of…

Another example of translation differences makes me have a totally different interpretation of the first scene.
In Japanese it used "かわいが" the term means to "care lovingly."
English translated to cuddle.
Mandarin is translated to "look after" or some translated directly, the same as the Japanese meaning.
Therefore, what I read was something like this:
"New boy, we'll look after you."
Are the boys really offering kindness? I don't know, but when I read the Mandarin version, it was almost in a tone like hazing a new boy. If it was hazing, then it would explain why L said that they used violence against him, and then he fought back. Therefore, he is justice. (my fanfic applied this interpretation)
On the other hand, if you apply the English translation, it would seem that the boys were offering a warming cuddle to L, but he interpreted it as violence.
Both interpretations are valid. Readers of this post, what do you think?
I have been so used to hearing L's dub voice in my head (whenever i read fics) and also whenever I watch clips that it genuinely shocked me when i heard the "I am L" scene in japanese and how different they sounded alongside the implications in the attitude of their characters.
L's sub voice holds a natural polite tone normal for the japanese whilst maintaining an air of professionalism and authority. His tone does not sound "condescending" too when he told the task force about how they would've died if he was kira. It was respectful although you can hear the slight disappointment in his voice, as if he's trying not to let it shown out of tact.
Additionally, the way jpn sub! L spoke the "Let's show Kira that we're willing to risk our lives, because justice will prevail." scene sounds encouraging to say the least. He was clearly driven by personal reasons ("But I will win in the end.") but even so, he was speaking in a "we" sense, like he was giving the task force some acknowledgement for their efforts and then pushing them to do better in the investigation.
The dubbed version of this scene, on the other hand, gives a feeling that L like meeting and working with the task force is more of a "chore" rather than of extra help. The perpetually tired tone of dub!L made the "Please don't give out your names so casually." scene translate to "Gosh, they're so stupid." It's both mockery and a warning. Atleast, that's how I interpreted it.
He lets his authority known by the task force without coating it. For example, the "I want to show kira that we're all risking our lives if that's what it takes, because justice will prevail no matter what" scene is very authoritative. Note on the emphasis on "I WANT," like L's telling the team "Yes, we will but under MY orders."
Now this isn't a hate on the death note dub version. I loved the dubbed voice for L and i do believe it also fits him. You could say I was just surprised at how a slight change of tone and delivery could change a scene so much.

So as long as you did your research, I think any reasonable interpretation of L would have their own readers."
Adding a small note to this, I would say that one of the major differences with Another Note and L:Change the WorLd when it comes to how Watari is represented is also due to these mistranslations from the original source material. I'm unsure whether this is due to a lax approach when it comes to tone, or difficulty understanding the nuances between languages. JP is more concept based which possibly tripped the translators a bit, though this issue isn't exactly uncommon in western books and movies either.
The EN version adapted the tone and the words in a very flexible fashion, to the point that we're almost seeing variations of the same characters. There's a lot of hate towards Watari and Wammy's that seems unjustified, especially if one peruses through AA and L:CtW — particularly the latter.
I would venture a polite guess that both AA and L:CtW are closer to the original concept for Watari as a kind, though curious man who raised detectives to help the world. L's philosophy of kindness through justice also seems to be one of Watari's teachings.
What does give me some pause is the environment of toxic competition where everyone seems to want to step on L in order to defeat him. Without going into an in-depth analysis on this, I'd think it's a consequence of a failed model, though the original concept wasn't at all villainous as sometimes people might believe.

Oh, I saw your post! It was definitely a thought-provoking read; we are so used to translations for JP works that sometimes it doesn't occur to us that they might be biased, or not entirely accurate to the original tone.
I find it something of a complication. It even breaks my trust on these supposed 'official translations' quite a bit, because it shows a lack of understanding of the source material. That's also why I prefer to read in the original language as often as possible. I usually take what I read with a grain of salt and consult the sub + dub version (and even fan translations) to get a better understanding of tone. There's definitely a massive difference in the way Watari is portrayed across the different mediums and it's very interesting to get a glimpse of the way the translations have actually been handled.
There's also an argument to be made about translation philosophy: it often happens that being faithful to the letter vs being faithful to the spirit can come into conflict. When authenticity is put into question, the true personality of the characters can be wildly misinterpreted.
That's why you it's a good rule of thumb to avoid specific translators. Though I don't speak the language, I've heard about the infamous Polish translation of The Lord of the Rings by Jerzy Łoziński, which apparently has become a meme because it tried to make the book more 'homely' and 'native' to readers. It ended up creating an absurdist folk tale that lacks the gravitas of the original work and reads like a fever-induced-dream, or so I was told.
I've been pondering about it and trying to think of some examples I'd actually like an opinion on, since the EN version is clearly biased. For example, how is the iconic Monster speech handled?
There are several versions available for the anime and manga, this one being the most gut wrenching:
“There are many types of monsters that scare me: Monsters who cause trouble without showing themselves ,monsters who abduct children , monsters who devour dreams , monsters who suck blood … and then, monsters who tell nothing but lies . Lying monsters are a real nuisance: They are much more cunning than others. They pose as humans even though they have no understanding of the human heart; they eat even though they’ve never experienced hunger ; they study even though they have no interest in academics ; they seek friendship even though they do not know how to love. If I were to encounter such monsters, I would likely be eaten by them… because in truth, I am that monster. ” I wonder how this reads in the original language and just how bastardised the EN translation made it. lux-mea-lex
I went to watch the Mandarin and JP versions of the Moster speech. Mandarin uses 怪物, which can translate to monster, a quite general term. While in Japanese, it used the term 化け物(bakemono).
Japanese does have the term 怪物(zaibatsu); it is more natural. But if you read the kanji plainly, it would have a slight difference. 怪物 directly translates to "strange thing", giving a sense that it is something that people have no knowledge of or they are different, therefore labeling it as "strange." Creepy, ugly, scary creatures in nature, all fall into the category of 怪物
While in 化け物, it has a "transformation." included when you read it more narrow. Therefore, ghosts and bad spirits are bakemono, as they are human transformed to spirits; Fox yokai are bakemono, the Ghibli animation "Pom Poko
Here's the original Japanese context:

Judging from the translation and how in JP forum fans discussion, it is safe to say that L's monster speech in English is accurate. *YAY*
While researching, I found something very interesting. A Japanese fan, after watching the monster speech, thought about L's name, "Lawliet," which included law and lie, as if right and wrong are two sides of the same coin. Perhaps L feels the same too. Although he stated that he is just and righteous, he also admits that he is evil and a lying monster. A monster that would be defeated by another lying monster.

(I don’t really like the term ubermensch because of the historical connotations but that’s beside the point)But back to L, I don’t recall seeing in his thoughts that he explicitly believed himself to be superior over others but it probably shows in how he speaks to Matsuda and Misa-- calling them ‘stupid’ or implying it, etc. L always thought he was right and (usually) that his way was the best, but the sum total of his efforts in life had indeed proven to himself and others that he was a singular kind of person. He was realistic about his abilities and intelligence, and could be callous to those who didn’t share them. Smart people can be dicks about that sometimes lol. So, I can’t really buy that he believed he was inferior. If I had to guess, L accepted he was different from most people in ways both good and bad and didn’t find a lot of value in bemoaning it after figuring that out. He accepted himself as he was, for better or worse, because understanding himself and his strengths/limitations was also a kind of power. The ‘worse’ part could play into that speech about monsters and which kind he felt he was-- cunning monsters who always tell lies, have no understanding of the human heart, cannot form friendships or love, cannot feel hunger, who attain knowledge without appreciating or advancing it. If this is how L views himself it is bleak but he states it so matter-of-factly I cannot equate it with self-hate. It feels like deep self-acceptance, to the point that he doesn’t see himself changing, and recognizes its a weakness that someone like him could identify and exploit. So, his answer to the kid at Wammy’s, to name his fear, is meeting a ‘monster’ like himself who also knew what they were, because that would be the one who could beat him. 47 notes

I also see Wammy as a person with pretty much conservative views, and having a strong old-school moral compass; that leads me to believe he viewed L’s work as a good deed, and genuinely wanted it to be continued - that’s the second reason for founding Wammy’s house.But people like Quillsh Wammy have also a weakness - they are not emotional. Strong willpower, that makes them great achievers, makes them also feel that many things can be achieved with just patience and determination.That’s one of the reasons why we have A. I don’t know if that was the fault of the successor’s program being too harsh. Although I have some thoughts about A’s personality, and I would like to share them in another post.But the good thing about Watari as an inventor was that when things didn’t work, he didn’t throw them away. Currently trying to write my headcannon combine with my L/OC story. As we all know, issues in a institution is never one man's fault. Various factors could be involved in a tragedy. I personally (spoliers to my fic) think that Watari did made some policy adjustments to not let the same tragedy of A and B happen again. And therefore, Near and Mello were them. Being themselves. Even as the successors of L, they have distinctive personalities, traits, and behaviours that are different from L. Original context in Japanese is "personal interest", which can indicate passion, interest, a sense of accomplishment, whether it is to see them succeed or do good to the world or other. I think I'm overreacting (sigh) maybe it's because I wanted to believe that Watari is the faithful servant and father figure of L, instead of someone with malice. His tone does not sound "condescending" too when he told the task force about how they would've died if he was kira. It was respectful although you can hear the slight disappointment in his voice, as if he's trying not to let it shown out of tact.Additionally, the way jpn sub! L spoke the "Let's show Kira that we're willing to risk our lives, because justice will prevail." scene sounds encouraging to say the least. He was clearly driven by personal reasons ("But I will win in the end.") but even so, he was speaking in a "we" sense, like he was giving the task force some acknowledgement for their efforts and then pushing them to do better in the investigation.The dubbed version of this scene, on the other hand, gives a feeling that L like meeting and working with the task force is more of a "chore" rather than of extra help. The perpetually tired tone of dub!L made the "Please don't give out your names so casually." scene translate to "Gosh, they're so stupid." It's both mockery and a warning. Atleast, that's how I interpreted it. He lets his authority known by the task force without coating it. For example, the "I want to show kira that we're all risking our lives if that's what it takes, because justice will prevail no matter what" scene is very authoritative. I'm unsure whether this is due to a lax approach when it comes to tone, or difficulty understanding the nuances between languages. JP is more concept based which possibly tripped the translators a bit, though this issue isn't exactly uncommon in western books and movies either.The EN version adapted the tone and the words in a very flexible fashion, to the point that we're almost seeing variations of the same characters. There's a lot of hate towards Watari and Wammy's that seems unjustified, especially if one peruses through AA and L:CtW — particularly the latter. I would venture a polite guess that both AA and L:CtW are closer to the original concept for Watari as a kind, though curious man who raised detectives to help the world. L's philosophy of kindness through justice also seems to be one of Watari's teachings. What does give me some pause is the environment of toxic competition where everyone seems to want to step on L in order to defeat him. Without going into an in-depth analysis on this, I'd think it's a consequence of a failed model, though the original concept wasn't at all villainous as sometimes people might believe.lunalit-riverI TOTALLY agree! In brief, when in the one shot, English translated "it is tedious to tend to his needs" as if Watari was fed up, but in original context it was "L consider trivialities bothersome." (Yes, he thinks wearing clothes is bothersome) and in HTR, English translation Ohba stated, "Watari raises detectives for fun", but in original, he stated, "It is Watari's personal interest to raise detectives." Instead, he says that he does not 'know' B and is simply aware of him, which could be interpreted to mean any number of things. You can meet someone and interact with them and still reasonably claim that you do not 'know them', in the sense that you do not know them well.In this scene, L insists to Misora that his relationship with B (or lack thereof) will not affect the case; I don't see why he wouldn't be absolutely clear about never having met B if this is the point he's trying to make. Especially if L feels that B's actions reflect on him, which Mello considers here:Mello also speculates that B may have committed The LABB Murder Cases in an attempt to meet L. However, he admits several times over the course of the novel that his interpretations of B's motives are just that, speculation. This guess is made further unlikely by B's intention to die at the conclusion of the case and the fact that he expected L to send a pawn in his place. Mello assumes they never met, but he has no way of knowing.Beyond Birthday's disguise, Rue Ryuzaki, is an accurate enough imitation of L for Misora to think of him immediately when she meets L in person at the end of the book.
