The last 3 years have culminated in an Obsidian process that works extremely well for me. I think it’ll work for you too.
Background
A few years ago, at 40, I was diagnosed as having ADHD. I hope this explains a lot — and links me directly to those who share my experience, and can benefit from this information.
I’m documenting my process with the hopes that this helps someone with their note-taking configuration. I also hope to gain some more insight from my cognitive processing. With that in mind, this article documents some of the reasons behind why I journal the way that I do.
[2025 update: I’m adding these paragraphs to elaborate on how the neurodivergence played a role in this process.
1. Hypervigilance: This could be a result of upbringing. My dad was overbearing and extremely critical. He may have been that way because I was such a klutz. Either way, this caused a sort of defensive cognitive process, which entails knowing why i should think or do in a specific manner, and being able to explain it.
2. Overthinking: overthinking something may not be tied back to hypervigilence. For instance, I might generally be overthinking. It’s important for me to understand why I think the way that I do. This enables confidence in my product, be it code, or writing, or speaking, or any action I take.
3. Working Memory: I will often get so wrapped up in a task that I forget something else that is quite important.
4. Executive dysfunction: While I’ve reached 40 and have a Masters in Computer Science, it’s required a LOT of hard work, I have over the years added systems that support me. Eg: calendar reminders that my vehicle license is coming up for renewal. Tying my notes into my calendar merges the two systems, thus reducing the cognitive friction.
5. Dopamine drive: The ebb and fall of my dopamine cycles contribute to my ability to focus on and execute on some task. Therefore, I must schedule in reflection, or exploration to find new sources of interest, and discard older practices that aren’t as rewarding as they used to be.
Do I use Obsidian for all my notetaking requirements? I write about the ultimate note-taking solution, here. I also suggest a 3-tool combo for mastery of tasks and ideas, here
