CUMBERLAND - An event like no other in the world is scheduled to take place July 7 as part of the Canal Fest/Rail Fest weekend.

Teams consisting of 20 members will attempt to pull Mountain Thunder, the 250-ton Baldwin steam locomotive, a distance of 12 feet in the fastest possible time.

The event is open to anyone who thinks they have the power to move this mammoth load. There are basically three divisions of pullers, the open class for any team consisting of 20 members, the co-ed class for teams of approximately 10 male and 10 female contestants, and the women's class, which will pit teams of 20 women against each other. Because this is the only event of its kind in the world, a new world's record can be set at this event.

This fundraiser for Special Olympics of Allegany County is organized by the Allegany County Sheriff's Office and the Special Olympics committee.

The local Special Olympics of Allegany County does not receive state or federal funds for their local group. Local expenses must be raised locally in order for the athletes of Allegany County to be able to participate in the many different sports. "In order for the athletes to be able to participate in events like the Winter Olympics, softball and basketball, we have to raise enough money for travel, uniforms and equipment. We hope that the community will come out and support the train pull so that we can continue to provide these opportunities for our Special Olympic athletes," said Dottie Turner, local director.

The rules for the train pull are simple. Businesses and community groups are asked to put together their teams of 20 people, and raise $500 for their team entry fee. Jimmy Bone, event coordinator, said, "Individuals who wish to participate can pay the $25 per person fee, receive an event T-shirt, and be assigned to a team. So as you can see this event is opened to anyone who wishes to participate."

The event is scheduled for July 7 at the Western Maryland Railway Station. Registration will begin around 9 a.m. with the main event to follow. The event organizers hope that the 2007 Train Pull will be the biggest and best yet. There is plenty of room for spectators as well, so this is really a community event for people of all ages. And after the event, the participants and their supporters can enjoy all the activities of the Canal Fest/Rail Fest that is held the same weekend.

Organizations and individuals interested in participating, sponsoring or making a donation to the event can contact Bone at (301) 729-4132. For more information and entry forms log on to the Train Pull Web site: www.sotrainpull.org.
