Arsenal are expected to announce Andrea Berta as their new sporting director to permanently succeed Edu, who resigned in November.

The Italian will have to hit the ground running as Arsenal are approaching an important summer transfer window in which they want to sign a top striker and left winger to add unpredictability, while making player sales to offset the cost. The combined spending could exceed £200million, with a defensive midfielder also among potential arrivals.

Arsenal’s target is to become self-sustaining in the long term and Berta, who may be in attendance at the home league match against Fulham on Tuesday, was used to working within such a model at Atletico Madrid, making a profit on players and helping the club punch above rivals with
