Great game, HORRIBLE Polish localization
As someone who grew up playing the original and has always admired the "French Touch" in video games, this project holds deep personal meaning for me. It's truly a Game of my Childhood and really important one to me. I grew up playing Little Big Adventure, and it’s one of my favorite childhood memories. Now I’m a dad to a baby girl, and I couldn't wait to share that joy with her one day, too but not in this version because the Polish Localization is abolutely HORRIBLE. The sheer number of errors would be astounding even in an amateur localization and here we're talking about a product I PAID for! Within the first five minutes, I ran into a whole SERIES of mistakes—some pretty major ones. Honestly, I didn’t like it at all. The style feels rushed and amateurish, which really takes away from the experience. I had to switch back to the English version just to enjoy the game the way it’s meant to be enjoyed. Just take a look at mistranslation of the dialogue between Twinsen and Pacati the fisherman that makes no sense in Polish version: TWINSEN: "Any luck, Pacati?" (as in have you caught any fish) - translated as "Udało ci się, Pacati?" (Did you made it, Pacati). PACATI: "Not as much as on Proxima Island!" - translated as "Jak i cała wyspa Proxima!" (As well as the entire island of Proxima!) There's TON of mistakes, errors and blunders like this in the game. This is absolutely inexcusable. Just pure amateur hour. The translators have no idea what they were doing. It's appartant there was zero QA done on this game. It’s a shame, because the remake itself is fantastic and brings back some many memories alive again.
A marvelous re-make of a beloved game.
I am a veteran and fan of both Ms-DOS Little Big Adventure games. I played through both games, LBA2 several times. When the news of the LBA remake broke I became extremely excited. I played the demo and then decided to pre-order. The re-imagining of the game turned out extremely well. It retains the third-person look, but but with revised controls. I really like the colorful, vibrant new world, the new locations and the expanded story. At first the look of the world itself, as well as Twinsen, Zoe, Luna and the inhabitants of the world, is a bit unusual, but you soon grow to like it. As I progress through the story and rediscover previously familiar locations I am simply amazed at how well the visual atmosphere has been created. Right from the start in the Bu Temple you can see that a lot of care has gone into the creation of the setting. The music remains the same, just a little reworked. I liked it. They've done a good job of making sure that the musical underplaying always fits the situation. I read in several places that the game was adapted to the "woke" ideology, but I didn't experience that. When I was playing, I didn't notice anything like that (I wasn't looking for it either...). I was simply amazed at how well and atmospherically the devs could recreate the world of Twinsun. Overall, I can say that the remake was well done. I liked it a lot. The new controls take a bit of getting used to, but it's not a very difficult one. 9.5 out of 10. If you were a fan of the old LBA, you'll love Twinsen's Quest.
Nostalgia Bomb
Little Big Aventure - Twinsen's Quest is a third-person action-adventure game where you play as a Quetch named Twinsen, as he goes on a quest to rescue his little sister Luna from the clutches of the evil Dr. FunFrock. The game will allow you to travel across almost the entire planet, where you will encounter many characters who can use Twinsen's help, or who will be able to help him on his quest. For those of us who have played through the original, you will find a very familiar experience with only a few modern changes to the gameplay. Instead of the original's 4 behavior modes, you now toggle movement between sprinting and walking, and toggle aiming an overhead lob or straight pitch of the magic ball weapon, as well as a toggle to lock-on to a target. Running into walls no longer knocks back or hurts Twinsen. The new character of Luna is introduced and Zoe has been changed to better tie with her character from the second game, so Zoe actually gets a larger role here. You can save the game at anytime, but loading the save will take you to the moment you entered the scene, so as long as you take advantage of entering and exiting rooms, you can save frequently without losing progress. Most of the maps, puzzle solutions, and enemy behavior are identical to the original. There's no quick-travel so you'll still have to cross the Hamalayi to travel between hemispheres. And the original game's composer Philippe Vachey has reimagined all of LBA's wonderful songs for this release (the soundtrack is available with the Deluxe Edition content). In game you can change audio options, language, and re-bind keys. At the time of writing this review, it has only been two days since the game was released, so there are minor bugs and no graphics options, which are to be delivered in a future update. All in all, this was a very nostalgic trip back to one of my favorite games, but now in a more accessible form, and this has been one of my favorite GOG releases this year.
In the Shadow of the Original LBA
I have very mixed feelings. On one hand, it's a game, world, and story that deserved a new installment for a long time. Visually, it's very pleasant and strongly cartoonish, though it completely fails to recreate the atmosphere of the first LBA—the somber mood and color palette that conveyed the dire situation the characters faced. It reminds me more of the cheerful tone of LBA2. One of the stronger aspects is the music—modernized but retaining motifs from the original. However, here too, the sense of dread and grittiness is somewhat missing. A major point of criticism is the unnecessary changes to the story. Second—bugs! Bugs, bugs, bugs! Firstly, the Polish translation—it’s not bad; it’s atrocious and incomplete. There are also bugs where characters direct you to someone for information, but that person either doesn’t have it or is stuck performing a scripted action tied to a completed different goal, creating an inescapable loop. Similarly, there are broken dialogue lines: if you meet someone for the first time but happen to already have the item they’re supposed to ask for, the initial dialogue is skipped entirely. Speaking of faithfulness to the original—if Twinsen gets under fire, he might not be able to escape, easily getting stuck. The story changes didn’t address the original’s biggest flaw: loosely connected missions and nonsensical actions required to progress. For instance, a key location is never mentioned in dialogue, or a key is obtained from a random character with no hints. The lack of logic or guidance is frustrating—I mostly got through by recalling the original’s quirks. :( On a positive note, the new installment preserved the Easter eggs from LBA1, including dialogue-based ones—a detail deserving big respect. It’s the same great game in a modern version but lacks the original’s atmosphere, fails to address its most frustrating issues, and has the flaws I mentioned. Despite this, it was enjoyable and worth revisiting the planet Twinsun!
From a die hard fan from the 90's
I wrote fanfics at school and did a clay model of Twinsen at primary school back in the 90's, so a remake coming out, I was very happy. Seeing some of the changes to Zoe and the new character Luna made me worried but after completing the game, what do I think? Gameplay wise the game is very easy. AI was always dumb and exploitable but the range of attacks has been lowered so you rarely get hit. The map being one big giant map is really cool and there are some new locations and new objectives, not many, but it's there. The temple of Bu has a section completely removed. Movement is fluid and can easily be exploited for speed runs, I skipped an entire part of the temple of bu by just running and jumping. Melee combat is awful, most attacks don't connect or feel good, the sword feels very janky which is a shame. The Ball is by far the best part of combat but also breaks the game because of the range of attacks being very small but yours isn't. It's still fun to play, imho, it's just very very easy. Sounds are a mixed bag, feels very stock sounds at times, then sometimes sounds good. Music never felt as good as the original. Writing was very mixed. The new stuff can be very interesting, the start of the game was my fav part of the game, however there is a heavy focus on them wanting to do LBA 2 more and the story of LBA 1 suffers for that. The "woke" elements can be good, more female characters isn't a bad thing, it makes the world more real and diverse, but not in a bad way, it isn't just the same three models and VA's anymore. No animals. Loved parts of the ending, fighting with Zoe was awesome but ending it with Luna was lame, wanted more of Twinsen and Zoe being a team than the character who I believe is being setup for being the main character for LBA 3 as she doesn't really serve any purpose in the game other than being a damsel. Overal I'm happy to play something LBA related and overal it's good. Won't replace LBA 1 and that's fine.
