STILLWATER, Okla. — Garret Rangel found out he was going to start at BYU right after the loss to West Virginia.
For the first time in his career, he had two weeks to prepare as QB1. He took starting reps for two weeks due to Oklahoma State's bye week and felt good about the game plan for the Friday night trip to Provo.
To start the game, Rangel went 6-for-9 for 51 yards, threw a touchdown and an interception. He helped give the Cowboys a lead over the No. 13 Cougars and Oklahoma State had momentum in a hostile environment.
"It was different just because we had two weeks to prepare where I was the guy for those two weeks because we had the bye week before," Rangel said Tuesday, recalling that game from six months ago. "It was exciting being at BYU. That was a very fun experience."

Then with just over two minutes until halftime and Oklahoma State driving, Rangel broke free and scampered down the field for a 54-yard carry that ended with him breaking his collarbone. The Cowboys were forced to turn to their former starting quarterback Alan Bowman to finish the game with Rangel injured and Zane Flores already out for the season with surgery on his left foot.
Oklahoma State lost the game and Rangel had surgery four days later to begin a long rehab process. He had a metal plate and 12 screws put in and had a painful, hard rehab.
The injury — and the play that ended his season — took a mental toll on him.
