At least the Lodgers had put aside their love for their idol for now, listening to the founder for the first time in weeks. He had spent the past hour or so double-checking the barricades and defenses, hoping that metal and wood and stone could keep the monsters outside at bay. He nodded in greeting as he passed by Archer, carrying larges bags of soil in hopes of adding to the weight behind the main door.He couldn't help but worry for his Lodgers. On top of whatever unknown beings might be in the mist, they had not only fear-mongering fools in their midst, but apparently religious zealots as well. He could hear a few in the dining hall preaching about the dangers of science, and how the most and creatures were the wrath of God for turning their backs on him. Henry feared what would happen if they managed to sway those inside with their sermons. It was as he was making his way to head back to his office that he heard it. At first, he'd mistaken it for one of Griffin's mice, but after a moment he realized it was too big, and wasn't in the walls. Slowly, he turned to face his left, and froze. How had they missed this window?"God have mercy," He whispered as he heard the distinct sound of glass cracking behind the curtains. It was odd, though; it sounded like it was cracking from heat rather than pressure. He gasped as he caught sight of light behind the curtain and turned to run, but it was too late. He heard the glass shatter and felt something burning slam into his back. He hit the ground hard, then froze as felt six sharp points crawling over his shoulder blades. They left behind singes and heat, and he let out q cry of pain as he was burnt. The thing grew more agitated at the sound, burning him more. He scrunched his eyes shut, listening to the occassional buzz of wings and hiss of smoldering cloth, and found himself pleading in his head to be saved. "Jekyll!?"Henry wished he could take his pleading back as he watched three more of the grotesque 'insects' rush towards his unfortunate rescuer, the one on his back abandoning its nonresponsive prey for the now panicking Lodger. Henry heard others rushing over, drawn by the pained cries, and his blood went cold as the sound of buzzing wings began to match the pitch of the now full hall. Henry scrambled to his feet, red eyes fixed on the chaos, his Lodgers using whatever they could to fight back against the now glowing swarm. The creatures were about the size of a dog, each equipt with a long stinger that could easily pierce a human throat, the spikes on the ends of their legs a bright orange like hot iron.He felt his heart struggle to keep up to his adrenaline as he scrambled to figure out what to do. He couldn't tell them to be quiet, not without shouting himself, and then he'd be a target as well. The creatures had no visible eyes, just large frills extending from the sides of their heads that thrashed and quivered excitably with every loud noise. Luckily it was a small swarm, with no others coming through the window- the window!! Henry rushed to the window, pulling the curtains back to see flashes of more insects in the mist. He had to block it, or else the entire building might be overrun. Panicking, he grabbed a nearby side table, a vase falling off and shattering on the ground. A few of the monsters began to flit towards him, and he froze up as they landed on him. Breathing hard, he pressed the surface of the table to the open window, blocking off the hole in it as best he could. God, why did it have to be bugs? Why did it have to be bugs that could set things alight? He could feel himself shaking the longer they were crawling on him, not lifting his head as the Lodgers finally began to outnumber the disgusting beasts.Henry let out a choked sound as he felt something pierce his arm, looking down to see that something from outside had attacked the table. There was a long, thin claw stabbed through his arm, nearly reaching his chest. He couldn't scream, no matter how badly he wanted to, especially with two deadly stingers currently dragging over his tense muscles. Eventually, the sound of buzzing died down, and the claw in his arm retreated. He wished he could just crumple to the floor and pass out, but there were still creatures on him and a hole to block."Shit, Jekyll!!" Someone hit the creature off his shoulder, quickly stabbing the other with the pointed end of the home-made spear they were thankfully carrying. The monsters screeched as they were stomped on and stabbed repeatedly before finally going quiet, their bodies crackling with the heat of their own blood before crumbling into ash, extinguished. "Jekyll, you hurt?""Luckett.""What?""Luckett found me when they first broke in," Henry choked. "They attacked him. Is he okay?" The Lodger tending to him, Ito, turned to check. She didn't have to, as a broken wail rang out, and Henry closed his eyes tight as grief began to wash over him. They'd lost one."Sean!!" Sinnett was screaming, holding the detonative homeopathologist to his chest. The other Lodgers gathered around the two, a few gentle sobs ringing out, quickly drowned by Sinnett's anguished cries. Henry kept his head down, injured arm shaking as he kept the table firmly pressed over the hole in the glass. He could hear Sinnett begging Luckett to wake up, to respond, could hear him kissing the other's face through heaving breaths and gagged sobs. He kept his eyes closed as the others finally got Sinnett to let go of his lover's corpse, and it wasn't until a majority had left to handle the remains that someone finally walked up to him."This is your fault," Any pleas for assistance died on Henry's tongue. "If you hadn't been so reckless, Luckett would still be here." They walked away, and Henry stood there, head bowed, until those with boards and other barricading materials arrived. He stepped away, feeling light-headed, but brushed off any questions about his health or if he was injured with an exhausted indifference.
