if only these kids listened to r/relationships’ classic “COMMUNICATE WITH UR PARTNER” advice and didnt misunderstand each other and end up dying full of regret :’)

Hi, I'm a sophomore in college and I was starting to consider chasing a career as a concept artist or a game developer, what skills do you think are most valued by employers these days? Both technical and metaphysical. What was your journey like? If you wouldn't mind me asking
So my path was starting as a low-level generalist and working my way up over the course of several years while constantly adapting to what was needed from me, and I specialized in my free time until I was good enough at that specialization that I could get a job completely dedicated to it. I never went to any art schools and I’m self taught. I’m a 3D modeler first and a concept artist second, and not an illustrative kind of concept artist either who’d do promotional art or such - the concept work I do is usually really quick and rough and its purpose is communicating ideas and rapidly knocking out designs and variants, so it’s not the type that looks fancy and gets plastered all over Creative Uncut, but it also doesn’t need to be if it serves its purpose.
There’s room for a lot of different skill niches in the industry, but the more niche you get the better and more self-sufficient you need to be as an artist. This also generally only happens many years in, if ever, and only a tiny few lucky ones manage to get into their dream job straight out of school or whatever. But as for practical advice starting out:-Take a look at what jobs are available closest to you. Studios prefer to hire local, and they basically never relocate entry level workers. Adjust your immediate goals so you can be useful to those studios, or gather the resources you need to take a chance and move to where there are studios you want to work for.-Look at the portfolios of artists who work there and look at the history of what they’ve been making. That gives you an idea of what you need to be able to do and the quality demands you need to meet.-Be as useful as possible starting out. Build up solid generalist art skills. I personally strongly advocate 3D and 2D skills paired together so you’re well rounded and it gives you wider opportunities. Additionally, the smaller the studio, the more they need you to wear many hats in the production pipeline.-Low-level jobs outside AAA hotspots (LA, Montreal, Vancouver IIRC?) are often at mobile or casual studios. They look for artists who can create visuals that appeal to mass market tastes. It’s really useful to be able to work in styles that are simplified, fun, cute and colourful. Thus, it’s good to know principles of cartooning and applying that into 3D work.-Whichever discipline you pick, go to life drawing sessions if possible. Practice figure drawing a lot, as much as you can. It builds up all the essential fundamental skills.-Learn discipline. You need to be able to crank out whatever art is asked of you on a schedule and you can’t wait for inspiration. Often deadlines are tight and you have a team depending on you, and you need to have the fortitude to work under pressure and reliably produce art to a good standard. There is no such thing as art block in a production environment.
Then, finally, specific to concept art, I’d like to refer you to these great posts by Anjin Anhut:http://howtonotsuckatgamedesign.com/2014/02/lets-get-real-concept-art/http://howtonotsuckatgamedesign.com/2014/06/reader-question-learn-become-concept-artists/And I want to point out that concept art is an overrepresented art discipline that actually employs far fewer people than what you might have an impression of. Our studio only employs one dedicated concept artist (at the time of writing this). I personally only know a small handful that actually do it as their entire work role, and often they’re also asked to work on user interfaces and marketing visuals. Concept art is also highly competitive as there is an overabundance of extremely skilled artists in proportion to the jobs available. So I would advise against putting all your eggs in that basket - it’s really good to learn skills needed to produce concept art and be able to crank out ideas, but in my view it should be one of many skills in your repertoire.
There’s a public perception that far glorifies 2D art in general over 3D. Being an artist who does both, I frequently notice that 2D works that I might only spend a few hours on get far more exposure and shares than 3D works that I might work on for weeks or months, and the works that I learn the most from and feel the proudest about often barely get any notice whatsoever. I don’t know why. But what I mean to say here is that there’s a world of possibilities beyond 2D illustration and concept art that gets glossed over by the public consciousness because it’s not as media sexy or immediately relatable, and it can offer incredible opportunities, and you should explore as many different options as possible before you settle on a single path.
Wow, this was a long post. Hope it was any help.
