The Book of Life: Concept art = Movie
It took me several seconds to realize the first pic was concept art and not some altered version of the movie still. Holy crap.
What’s incredible about this is that when Gutierrez first made the announcement for the movie’s production, he said he was “tired of animated movies looking completely different from the concept art, and how the concepts were always more beautiful.“ and how he wanted to ”make an animated movie that looked exactly like the concept art”.
and he DID. And I have SO MUCH RESPECT FOR THAT. It’s literally jaw-dropping.

Okay but people always forget both that Bruce became the Hulk as a result of an act of selflessness, and that Bruce/Hulk’s first encounter with a villain (Gargoyle) didn’t end with Hulk pounding him into the dirt, but with Bruce offering to use his knowledge to help cure him, and as a result inspiring him to perform a selfless act of his own to save Bruce and Rick. In the very first issue of the Incredible Hulk, it’s ultimately not Hulk and his brawn that save the day, it’s Bruce.
Bruce’s self-sacrificing nature and kindness have been intrinsic parts of his character since the very beginning.

Test value and sketches. I tried to figure out how I am going to ‘control’ the massive amount of design elements of the time period. I needed some restrictions on myself so that I wouldn’t go over the top with the details. Some of the many limits I gave to my approach were ‘keep all the detail on the top’ and ‘less on the bottom’. Also, all the patterns will stay within a shape or a frame, which then can be used as a framing device for a story moment or to lead the eye into it. And of course, the classic straight vs curve is part of it too.
