The World's Greatest Detective in the Retro Futuristic Realms of Steampunk!Imagine a slight change to our historical timeline where the Industrial Revolution heated up much quicker than expected. Mechanical Men and Otherworldly Endeavours - Volume two of the anthology features stories with a focus on robotic creatures and otherworldly adventures. See Holmes team up with intelligent animals from an alternate Earth, switch bodies with Dr. Watson, and travel to another dimension. •The Adventure of the Purloined Piston Valve by L.S. I love Sherlock Holmes and Mycroft Holmes, who doesn't? This is a wonderful collection of short stories, on the steampunk version of Sherlock Holmes. Well written, good plotting. Read and enjoy!

    I have usually been a traditionalist Holmes enthusiast. I have always thought that Holmes and Watson belonged in their own little part of the world in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Then I saw this book. I am a casual fan of steampunk, believing it to be a very fun idea of how the world would have worked had it been real. So, when I saw the combination of the two, I was intrigued.

    What won me over was the description of the stories. They sounded very well crafted and piqued my curiosity. I am happy to say that this collection of stories is far, far better than I could have imagined. Not only are they a beautifully crafted combination of the two genres, but the characters of Holmes and Watson are true to cannon. (Even the mechanical Holmes)

    I simply had to keep reading from one story to the next. Belanger books put out a sure fire winner with this collection. If you are a die-hard fan of Holmes, you will be happy. If you are a casual fan, you will be happy. If you are a steampunk fan, you will be happy.

    I sincerely hope that there will be another set of volumes to continue this fine collection.

    3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but...
    Reviewed in India on January 12, 2022
    The book contains eight stories of various lengths. Most of them were absolutely juvenile in terms of plot, characterisations and overall composition. But three stories stood out. They were~
    1. Derrick Belanger's "The Adventure of the Tiger's Topaz";
    2. Paula Hammond's "The Adventure of the Brompton Mausoleum" (a brilliant piece that outshone everything else in this book);
    3. S. Subramanian's "A Second Case of Identity" (I had no idea that a pastiche can be so humored).
    Except these three works, the rest were, regrettably, forgettable.

    3.0 out of 5 stars Some really great stories, and some not-so-great
    Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 6, 2020
    I started off really liking the idea - Sherlock Holmes has always felt a bit steampunk anyway. And then the first few stories really didn't do it for me - they felt plodding and self-satisfied, in the way that steampunk content often does, as if it's so pleased with itself for having had the idea that it doesn't actually have to be any good. But then the next few were much better, and the trend continued. So I'd give this three and a half stars if that was allowed.
