"All we need is a pumpkin, a wand, and six white mice." Sherlock Holmes, the world's greatest detective, has taken on such opponents as Dracula, Dr. Fu Manchu, and Jack the Ripper. Now Holmes is presented with a puzzle that even he admits "This is outside my realm. Dealing with demon hounds on the moors was one thing, but to take on a fairy godmother? No!" Holmes and Watson seek the answer to the question of who is the mysterious masked woman who charmed a prince with her beauty, wit, and intelligence. It's a puzzle the duo have never faced before as they seek to unlock the secrets behind one of England's wealthiest families. The story of Cinderella, a young woman who rises above adversity to find happiness, is one of the most beloved in world literature. She appears in stories as old as ancient Egypt and the Incas, as far flung as Africa to Russia, as Mexico to China. Now with Holmes and Watson there is a new spin on an old tale. All your elements are here: the Prince, the Stepmother, the masked ball, but things do not turn out as they have in the past because this is a modern Cinderella.

About the Author

Thomas Owen has boated on the Yukon, beach combed north of the Arctic Circle and on the Aleutians. A graduate of Reed College in Portland, Oregon, he has lived and worked in Boston, Massachusetts for over 25 years. He has helped edit magazines, including the science fiction periodical, GALILEO, publish books, and worked at one of Boston's "Best Bookstores", the Avenue Victor Hugo Bookshop. He has been a fan of Sherlock Holmes as long as he can remember; from the time he watched Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce bring their chemistry to the silver screen until the present. He has long collected Holmes pastiches, but it wasn't until he helped edit some Cinderella stories for publication that he learned of that character's literary scope. It then occurred to him to combine these two iconic characters and bring them together in a great adventure.

This is simply a superb offering. When first seeing the title, my first thought was I was investing in a bit of fluff that was worth neither the time nor the money. Talk about being wrong. What Mr Owens has done is place a strong plot containing some dark background elements into a fairy tale structure. It makes for a marvelous read and I look forward to more of Mr Owen's offerings. His only dilemma from this point will be maintaining this level of excellence.

A foreign prince meets an English girl at a fancy dress ball and falls instantly in love. But at the stroke of 11:00pm she runs off, leaving behind only one slipper. The prince brings the slipper to Holmes and asks him to find the girl. The rest of the story follows Holmes and Watson as Holmes figures out who the girl is, along with some very funny miscues caused by the prince. Chaos follows in his wake because he is too headstrong to wait patiently while Holmes works on the problem. Holmes finds the girl (you will know who she is the minute she appears in the story) but the ending to this tale is very different from the original, as this Cinderella is a quite modern girl who has not been sitting around waiting to be rescued from her lot in life.

The story is very well written and is not prone to the usual self-publishing grammatical and spelling problems. It was a fun read and it's certainly an original idea to link up a Sherlock Holmes story with a fairy tale. I have to admit this story is quite clever and original. However, as much as I enjoyed it, I found it a bit more "precious" than I would prefer a Sherlock Holmes pastiche to be. Nevertheless, I will repeat that this was a fun read, light-hearted and enjoyable.

This is a very well executed Holmes tale with a great combination of another classic story. All your favorite characters are here: Lestrade, Mrs. Hudson, and of course, Mycroft. You will not be disappointed by adding this to your Holmes collection.

    “A Delightful And Fun Read.”

Inspector Lestrade brings Prince Anthony of Grautania to Sherlock Holmes with an odd story: While attending a masked costume ball at the home of Lord Chesterville, a masked lady caught his attention, and they spoke together for a while. He became smitten with her, but at a certain time she claimed she had to go, and raced off, losing a slipper in her haste. Now Prince Anthony wants desperately to find his mysterious Cinderella of the Ball.

Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes visit Lord Chesterville’s home, the scene of the mysterious happening, where things appear not quite above board. How had the young masked lady disappeared so easily, and could there be more to her than just a mere guest of the Ball? The mind of Sherlock Holmes sees more than he lets on, and suddenly makes a mysterious trip to France, leaving Dr. Watson wondering what he is up to.

For the most part I have passed up Sherlock Holmes as reading material because of the Victorian period in which the stories were written. I’ve tried to read early works set in the period, but found the archaic writing hard to follow; at least to keep my interest. Thus, I did not bother with Sherlock Holmes. But I must say, this short novel by Thomas Owen, combining the master detective with a certain fairy tale, is a delightful, and fun read. Although the reader will quickly figure out the mystery of the masked woman, we don’t discover all the truth until Sherlock Holmes reveals it at the end.

This is a delightful, well written tribute to Sherlock Holmes that strikes all the right notes. The reader senses Mr. Owen's affection for and knowledge of the Holmes stories throughout this new adventure. The addition of a rather Ruritanian prince and a runaway Cinderella is truly inspired. Mr. Owen displays his own droll sense of humor while doing right by both Conan Doyle and the "Modern Cinderella." I would recommend this as an excellent addition to the shelves of any Holmes collector, or anyone who appreciates a clever story, for that matter.

Engaging and well written, with a plot that moves briskly along and just the right touch of humor. You can see Mr. Owen's love of the Holmes canon on every page, and there's a sprinkling of "in jokes" for Holmes aficionados. Hopefully Owen will soon favor us with another adventure.
