Making games is hard. You are constantly riding right on the edge of technical innovation, human psychology, and capturing lightning in a bottle. It’s unpredictable, and doesn’t fit neatly with the standardize go-to-market playbook that so many publishers use. Genuine player feedback and community creation requires a space in the go-to-market plan and post launch game as a service roadmap that few are really willing to commit to. The underlying friction here is why so many games fail in their aspirations.

AI undeniably plays a crucial role in game development, gameplay, and operations. Companies like NetEase use ChatGPT to generate dynamic NPC dialogues, enhancing player immersion. Call of Duty employs AI to monitor and mitigate abusive behavior in online chats, creating a safer gaming environment. Volley develops AI-powered interactive voice games, offering totally new experiences. Additionally, AI chatbots assist in daily development routines, like writing source code, generating story ideas, and scripting dialogues, significantly reducing development time and costs. AI is already integral to modern game creation. What I am thinking after reading this piece is if it really matters if AI was used to create a great game? The ultimate measure of a game's success lies in the experience it provides—not just in the tools used to create it. How I'm managing 3 co-dev contracts: Business has been going well. Recently we signed 3 gaming contracts with vastly different requirements. 1. Adapting 2 styles together The 1st contract is an Asian art-style game that has to fit Western markets. We were tasked to make the game globally accessible. Using a Western-like art style, we are refining the game. 2. Scaling stage The 2nd contract is with a game that's got the green light. They want to take their game to the next level. 3. Requiring high-quality development The 3rd contract is with an existing client. Know, like and trust is already built. They need high calibre development, so we keep going. What I enjoy the most about the work we do at UGI: - Flexibility - Adaptability - Variety Because every contract is treated with care. Key to managing multiple projects is genuinely understanding. Understanding beyond the onboarding call. Constant pulse checks to ensure aligned visions. Wearing our adapt-hats to fit our client needs. Feeling stuck? A conversation may be all you need. PS. 💡ERROR LOG #17: Cheating 🤥? I’m not going to write about using cheats during Counter Strike’s match but I remember very well how frustrating it was competing with such players 20 years ago :D. 📝 Long story short, is it worth to cheat? Before I move forward I want to make one disclaimer. If you’re running on time because there is a production schedule with no mercy I understand the cheat, but if you have enough time but you want to play „smart” I believe that the risk of loosing more time than gaining is to high. 💡I remember animating a shot for one of the cinematics long time ago, it was one of these shots that literally every single frame was a picture as it was in slow motion. Tracking spacing was crucial and it was within one solid pose and props flying around. Camera was fixed so I decided to not care about anything except this particular camera framing. I had 3 days for this shot and I delivered it in less than 2 days being happy, hoping for having more time for the next shot or at least building a buffer for next shots. Director proofed me wrong next day as he changed the perspective… badum tsss. I was stressed, so I quickly did the same with new setup. Guess what? Director changed the perspective again and I didn’t get any single day more for the shot. I was stressed but finally decided to make it look solid in all camera angles making it kinda bullet proof. I spent extra 3 days on it but finally it was the best possible choice as a director changed this perspective 3 times more. ❔Don’t ask me why, it happens :). There are similarities in design too as each design sets expectations at the same time. You can’t forget about it as meeting these expectations later is crucial. If you’re not aware of it at the ideation phase you’ll either loose time on redesiging it later on or spend way more time to meet expectations you set. There is also 3rd way which obviously is „cheating”, so you can simply decide on investing your time in the most important parts of your design to make sure it will „look ready” hoping that „other” players won’t notice holes. 🤔 They will notice next day, trust me. Marvel Rivals is going to be a goldmine for NetEase Games 💥 With less than 30 characters, it showcased how a 6v6 open role queue game can achieve near-perfect balance (yes, almost) during its closed beta test. What Overwatch has been struggling to deliver, Marvel Rivals has already nailed. 🚀 I checked the SteamDB charts, and to my surprise, the game had a peak of 52,671 players during its short stint, with nearly 20,000 playing till the very end. Even at the last minute, matchmaking was quick, showing just how enthusiastic players were. I played until the server shutdown kicked me out. 📊 Interestingly, I saw multiple posts on the subreddit and Facebook groups mentioning how addictive the game is. From my experience, I can see it disrupting players' lives (in a good way, of course). 💌 Since Hi-Rez Ventures' Paladins in 2017, this is the first arena shooter that truly hooked me, even in its closed beta. I never imagined I'd spend so much time (~50 hours, nearly 250 matches) in a game where progress would be wiped out when the CBT ended. Big thanks to Dominik Graner for the key. 😉 At first glance, the game may seem like an Overwatch clone with Marvel heroes. But it delivers so much more. The well-thought-out character designs, music, voice lines, and gameplay demonstrate the absolute craftsmanship NetEase Games has achieved under Danny Koo's leadership. 📈 Most characters resemble their original comic book origins, and signature moves like Hulk Smash, Thor's God of Thunder etc are a pleasure to watch. The video in this post features Punisher's ultimate - Judge, Jury, Executioner. 🔥 While the game didn't reveal much about monetization, the demo battle pass hints that it will rake in money like crazy when it launches globally. I hope the game will not go toward pay-to-win mechanisms. 💸 I was also impressed with how stable the game is, at least on consoles. As an Xbox user, my default server was Virginia, and even with over 200 ping, the game ran seamlessly. I had tons of fun playing Marvel Rivals, and I can't wait to see how the game shapes up when it launches globally. Hopefully soon.

With development costs rising, we need to make games based on user feedback, not numbers and data from the past, says NEXON Games' Yong-hyun Park. Well, I never... He goes further "I think that focusing on user feedback is the most reliable standard at present … I think that if you confidently tell the upper management, 'This game will be well received by users!', it will be accepted, but I don’t think it will work if you say, 'We can make this much money.' This is because the sales figures change depending on various circumstances." Yong makes a good point, and appears to be a fan of Goodharts Law. Don’t makes games by the numbers—use data as a reference, not an absolute, and just because something worked before doesn’t mean it will work again. He seems like a CEO who understands that gaming sales and trends can vary wildly, and past success doesn’t guarantee future results. That said... Developers should listen to player feedback, but also filter it wisely and be willing to change course when necessary, rather than sticking to solutions that might alienate their fanbase. Ironically, relying too heavily on user feedback is that it often leads to creating games "by the numbers." When you ask players what they want, they tend to describe what they already know and like. For example, if I’d never played a Souls-like, Minecraft, The Sims, or Frostpunk, I’d never know to ask for games like them. Player feedback is valuable, but it’s often misused or ineffective when not properly filtered. A recent example: Zenless Zone Zero After complaints about "TV Mode" slowing down the story, the developers removed it from the main story, keeping it in side content. This sparked debate—some liked the faster pacing, while others felt TV Mode was vital to the game’s lore. Realizing this, the developers reworked TV Mode and reintegrated it into the story, leading to positive feedback. This shows the importance of filtering feedback and staying flexible. Many studios fail to adjust, then blame the players when their solutions don't align with player expectations. Developers need to listen and course-correct when needed. Personally, as a player, I would love to see more games made from developer inspiration, not market predictions, the latter often leading to bland experiences. However, in today's industry, that's mostly a dream reserved for indie projects or those not aiming for major profits—something a CEO can’t afford to publicly endorse. Hence why the development cost of games should decrease. Costs don’t seem to correlate with sales anymore and often end up being more harmful than helpful.

Looking for some #SystemDesign advice on my #LevelDesign / #GameDev Platform Game Template. I've got custom Sequence Players that can be targetted by switches as shown here. Each Player then has an option for whether the switch input switches it On/Off or Forward/Back. The problem is I'm sure some designers are going to want one switch for On/Off and another for Forward/Back. I've got a couple options, but nothing is totally comfortable. One option would be to create an advanced Sequence Player which has a slot for a switch that turns it On/Off and another for Forward/Back, or even a map of switches and the behaviour that it uses per switch, but that means a two-step process where the switch has to target the player AND the player has to target back to the switch. The other option is to rework all the switch logic to include Forward/Back or On/Off behaviour, but that seems confusing to me when you're connecting it to, say, a Door which doesn't really have a different behaviour for each. What's people's preferences?

NEW GAME TRENDING SUPERMARKET SIMULATOR (ROUND 2) In April, I published a post about the new trend of supermarket simulators 🛒 in the games industry. There I mentioned that this trend emerged on Steam (by Valve corporation) under the title "Supermarket Simulator", developed by Nokta Games. The trend quickly spread to the mobile market and spawned some hits, such as "Supermarket Manager Simulator" by Polish studio Digital Melody Games. 🇵🇱 At that time, the games that took advantage of this trend reached around 35MM downloads and US$512k in IAP revenue. What has happened since then? 🤔 Well… some gaming studios have read my post 🤣 and launched their versions of supermarket simulators. And studios that had already developed supermarket simulators, either in a different version to Nokta's game, also took advantage of the trend. 📈 (This is the case with "Hypermarket 3D", a Hypercasual simlutator published by Sunday and developed by Suji Games) The trend is still hot! 🔥 "Manage Supermarket Simulator" by Zego Studio has jumped to the top of the charts in recent weeks. 🔝 According to AppMagic, since March the supermarket trend has generated around 69MM downloads and US$1.1MM in IAP revenue in the mobile gaming market. I would like to share a project status update on what we’ve been working on here at T-Minus Zero. We have successfully wrapped up an internal pre-production milestone which has taken us one step closer towards our next NetEase project review gate, Prototype. As many of you know, these early stages of pre-production are both challenging and crucial to the success of a game. Exiting pre-production without a clear understanding of what you are creating often leads to either excessive spending (more time, people, or both) or the high probability of not shipping at all. To avoid that trap, we have remained hyper-focused on finding the fun of our game. Knowing what makes our game fun will provide a much clearer understanding of where we need to go in later development stages. The good news is, our game, even in its very rough, and early state, has proven to be fun. Throughout this phase, we have made significant progress and made several big pivots, refining our concept, always keeping the focus on creating a fun, and engaging player experience. I am incredibly proud of the team’s perseverance through the uncertainties of prototyping because… it’s not always fun, finding the fun.  Our game has some unique elements that have required us to trailblaze different approaches. Some worked, some didn’t – and others won’t have clear answers for some time to come. This is what makes game development incredibly hard. When you trailblaze, you make the best decisions you can with limited information, move forward, learn, and do it again and again. There is no map to tell you if you are trailblazing towards a cliff, or towards a hidden treasure! To be successful in navigating the unknown, you need a team that trusts each other and can solve hard problems together. What gives me confidence that our trailblazing is heading in the right direction is the fact that our team remained disciplined and never let a setback drag us down. Not only did we learn a lot about our game during this early development stage; we also learned a lot about our team. We have now set out on the last leg of our Prototype deliverable where we will continue plotting the course we charted from our previous milestone. Over the next seven months, we will work diligently to continue to showcase what makes our game truly unique. This phase will continue to emphasize fast iteration and prioritize a fun player experience. Even with the success of our last milestone, we are still trailblazing. It won’t be easy, and I am sure we will hit some unforeseen problems – but I have confidence we have the right team to get through it and go the distance. While I cannot share any details on the game at this moment, rest assured the team is working hard to create something we think players will really enjoy. We appreciate your continued support and enthusiasm. Together, we are on the path to creating something truly exceptional.

It’s a job application simulator/visual novel clicker game where the goal is to apply as much as possible to build motivation (called Fricks) which you can spend on upgrades to your application speed. As a professional game designer, I don’t often get to personally work on the creative assets in a game, so I wanted to do something that could not only tell the story of our experiences (and the experiences of so many others in this ridiculous job market), but also showcase my multidisciplinary skills in game design, art/animation, sound design/music production, and narrative design (plus overall creative direction/marketing chops). After almost a year of hard work, frame-by-frame effort, and applying to hundreds of real jobs, I’m stoked to announce the Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign for our idle game, You Got Laid Off. So you’ve been dreaming of breaking into gamedev, huh? 🎮 You’ve played around with Unreal or Unity, maybe even developed a mod or two, and now you’re ready to make the leap. But here’s the catch - your current job isn’t in gamedev. Maybe you’re coding in a big corpo, designing logos for clients in the agency, or managing projects in a completely different field. So, how do you tailor your resume to get noticed by a game studio?  It’s all about connecting the dots between what you’ve been doing and what game studios are looking for. Let’s break it down. 🎯 First off, let’s talk about transferable skills Your skills may be more valuable than you think. Coding in C++ at your IT company? That’s game programming gold. Running Agile sprints as a project manager? That’s exactly how game production rolls in most studios. Designing interfaces for apps? Hello, game UX design. It’s all about framing your existing skills to show how they can directly contribute to game development. 📝 Do your homework! Take time to research different roles in the gamedev, dig into the details, and identify the similarities with your current job. Avoid making quick assumptions - just because a job title sounds familiar doesn’t mean the roles are identical. Instead make sure you understand these differences and learn what you’re missing. 🚀 Next up: projects, projects, projects If you’ve been doing anything gamedev related in your free time, now’s the time to shine. Hobby projects, game jams, or even mods you’ve been working on? List them on your resume. Create a ‘Personal Projects’ section. Name the project, the dates, and what your role was (check Kamil Nowakowski post). 🎨 Speaking about passion… Let’s be real - game developers are passionate about what they do, and they want to hire people who feel the same way. Don’t hesitate to show your love for games. Write an ‘About me’ section to demonstrate that your decision is well-thought-out, not just a passing interest. Avoid generic language. The same goes for a 'Hobbies' section - mention your involvement in communities, your favorite games or genres that inspire you. 💼 Don’t forget the power of networking and continuous learning The gamedev community is tight-knit. Engage with it! Attend events, join online forums, connect with professionals on LinkedIn, and keep learning (you can find many online courses). Don’t forget to mention any certificates in your CV! 🧘 Be patient! Gamedev, as all industries, has its ups&downs. Sometimes it's easier to get in, sometimes not. I know it can be frustrating but there are times when all you can do is accept that this time it didn't work out and wait for the next opportunity. Don't give up! Marvel and NetEase Have Cracked the Code In the highly unforgiving genre of shooter games, where many titles often become lessons in failure, Marvel and NetEase have set themselves apart. They released “Marvel Rivals” and quickly gained around 2M downloads and a stable user base within 24 hours, all without major bugs or server crashes. “Marvel Rivals” hit over 322k concurrent players within 30 minutes of launch and surpassed 444k CCU shortly after that on Steam alone. This mirrors the energy that Overwatch had on its Day 1 release. But is this energy too similar? Former Blizzard president has claimed Marvel Rivals is a rip-off of Overwatch, pointing out similarities between Black Widow and Widowmaker. However, while the game structure may resemble Overwatch, the character kits are distinct, and arguably that is way more crucial. Marvel Rivals took inspiration from Overwatch, just as Overwatch took from Team Fortress 2. Art is never without inspiration. Comparing games this way is shortsighted, as players benefit from having competitors in the same genre. When you look at Team Fortress 2, Paladins, Overwatch, etc., you see these types of games have always borrowed elements from each other. But because it’s Marvel, it has so much more potential than any of those games. As a Designer, I have always believed in taking the best elements from existing things, blending them with your unique style, and garnishing the top to fine-tune the final product, always results in truly beautiful and enjoyable things. Although I haven’t played it yet, player feedback suggests it’s like Overwatch at half the speed– and much more forgiving. Overwatch’s fast pace can be a barrier, but as a fan of the genre, I adapted. NetEase has removed that barrier, making the game accessible to a broader audience who are now loving it. Competitive games are always fun before people optimize the fun out of them with optimal setups and being meta slaves. Let’s see how we feel about the game six months after its release. This was the same with Overwatch in 2016. Everything was chaotic and new, and we were all noobs. In 3 months we unlocked an entirely new market for a studio based in South Korea. Before approaching UGI they: Had a beautiful original Asian art style. Successfully launched the game in Asia to 1M downloads. Ready to adapt their Tower Defense game to the West. But they: - had a style that didn't fit Western tastes. - had ideas but no clear direction. - had some overwhelm by too many creative options. In the 1st few weeks the product team: - Fully immersed themselves in the game - Researched Western competitors - Generated 3 distinct styles They were a phenomenal partner. Synchronizing our vision to ensure alignment at every step. We didn't just stop at visuals: - 3 unique visions for characters and environments. - considered the influence on overall player UX - Strategies for how they could be marketed So how did we do? - Partner was thrilled with the result. - Opened a new market. - New revenue from the West. All while their art team could focus on their next project. Now they have access to a brand-new market. While focusing on their strengths. Because UGI does the heavy lifting. Yes, it took time and many back-and-forth. But the result was worth it. They went from a vision to: - 3 distinct art styles hand-delivered - full creative and marketing strategy DFY - attracting new players who love the new style. Projects like these remind me why I love what I do. - Transforming visions into reality - Helping our partners reach new heights.
